Epoxy pool paint and rubber pool paint are not compatible with water which creates a very serious problem for meeting the application guidelines for these products. Concrete pool shells will hold water for days after you pump them out in all but the hottest and most arid climates. In many areas even after draining the pool you will require 7 or more days of completely dry weather in order for the pool shell to dry. In theory the pool shell should be moisture tested, for example by duct taping a square of plastic to the floor in the deep end. If the plastic fogs up then there is still too much moisture in the concrete to apply the paint. This concern for moisture caused delamination is one of the main reasons why epoxy pool paint is less friendly as a do-it-yourself project.The next big problem with pool paint is that there are at least 3 fairly common types and you need to know which one you have to be able to paint over it. If you guess wrong then you will have a huge and costly mess on your hands. As a pool owner you will not likely be able to tell the difference between rubber or epoxy paint even with doing field testing with paint chips and different solvents. What Is The Proper Surface Preparation For The Pool
Surface must always be clean, dry and properly prepared prior to painting. Failure to do so will lead to eventually blistering and/or peeling. Previously painted surfaces should be Power Washed to remove loose paint or excessive chalking. Scrub the entire pool with a TSP solution to remove all dirt, oils, loose or peeling paint, and chalk. All surfaces should then be acid etched with a 15-20% solution of Muriatic Acid to achieve a medium grade sandpaper finish on bare or plaster and to remove mineral deposits on previously painted chlorinated rubber surfaces. Neutralize/rinse with TSP. Before applying the paint, the pool must be completely dry.

Switching From Rubber To Epoxy
In the old days, you had to sandblast the pool, to remove every trace of rubber paint, before you could repaint with the longer-lasting epoxy pool finish. Now, you can just use Advance Plus conversion paint as a primer, and then paint over with any Epoxy pool paint!
Epoxy pool paint is more expensive than Rubber Based, but it can last up to 7 years, wearing thin over time. It also produces a hard, ceramic-like finish lustrous!
Work Out The Type Of Paint Currently On The Pool
Firstly you need to work out which type of pool paint has been used on your pool previously . You cannot paint a pool that was previously painted with Epoxy pool paint with Chlorinated Rubber pool paint .
To find out what type of coating your pool has been painted with:
Rub the pool surface with a rag dampened with Acetone for 30 seconds. If the surface is sticky to touch it is Chlorinated Rubber, if the surface is not affected it is an Epoxy coating
