At the time of this writing, we at River Pools have installed over 1,000 inground fiberglass pools throughout Virginia and Maryland since our humble beginnings in 2001. Most of these pools were produced by many of the major fiberglass pool manufacturers in America.
Based on our experience, this is all you need to know about the durability of fiberglass pools: if a fiberglass pool is manufactured, installed, and maintained correctly it will last many, many decades.
In fact, many of the first fiberglass pools installed in the ’60s and ’70s are still fully functional today…and that was with antiquated methods and technologies!
With that said, there are some variables that will determine the life expectancy of your fiberglass pool and definitely merit some research on your part.
Fiberglass Pool Design Choices
When looking at fiberglass swimming pool design options, youll see a variety of shapes to choose from including:
- Rectangular
- Kidney
- Roman
A freeform-shaped pool just means that its not linear and that it resembles a kind of lagoon or uneven shape that is perfectly at home in many modern backyards. This splashy-looking shape lacks symmetry and frequently employs dramatic curves that add a bit of fun but may also cut into the amount of swimmable space inside the pool itself.
Kidney-shaped pools are also a good option for a more modern design, but it can be challenging to find a pool cover for this shape. Rectangular pools are another popular option for those looking to maximize their swimmable space, but these shapes can look severe in specific environments.

How To Keep Your Fiberglass Pool From Fading Prematurely
Even 20 years after installation, your fiberglass pool’s gelcoat should still look excellent if properly manufactured and properly maintained. Any color lightening would be gradual, even, and barely noticeable.
Premature or uneven fading of the gelcoat surface of fiberglass pools is almost always because of improper care of the pool’s water chemistry.
To extend the life of your pool, keep your water chemistry levels within the recommended ranges.
