It Is Easy And Quick To Install
The installation process of a fiberglass swimming pool is easy and fast. Installing a fiberglass swimming pool is going to take you approximately three to six weeks. Now, consider this against the process of getting a concrete swimming pool installed, which takes anywhere from three to six months.
This should help you realize how hassle and stress-free it will be for you to get a fiberglass pool installed. You will be able to enjoy the benefits of having a swimming pool in your home in just a month.
Fiberglass Inground Pool Prices
Because they are more labor intensive, inground pools will cost more than above ground pools. The average above ground pool is under $10,000. Inground pools can be six times that amount or more.
The total cost of an inground pool will depend on the package you select from your pool provider. That price varies from seller to seller, so shop around and find the right fit for you and your budget.
Fiberglass inground pool prices depend heavily on installation and how much work the pool company needs to do. Turn-key installation costs associated with fiberglass inground pools range from $45,000 to $85,000. Fiberglass inground pool packages with a self-install option are much less at around $20,000.
In general, the more labor you take on yourself, the less you will pay for your pool. The materials themselves will cost about $18,000 total. Labor on top of that can cost upwards of $65,000. That includes permits, digging, backfill, grading, filters and electrical work.
Quick Vinyl Liner Pool Installation
When it comes to installation time, vinyl liner pools take a close second to fiberglass. While they may take up to a few more weeks to build and install, you can still have a ready-to-use pool in a matter of weeks vs. the arduous months-long process required for concrete pools.
Sturdy, factory-controlled parts are pre-engineered and designed to fit together. Pre-engineered construction makes vinyl liner pools faster to install than concrete pools, which need to be poured directly on-site and require time to cure before they can be filled and enjoyed. This means you have more time to enjoy your vinyl liner pool once its been installed!

Do Fiberglass Pools Need Refinishing
Maintaining a swimming pool can be hard work. For some people, its a full-time job. With fiberglass pools, youre looking at very minimal maintenance compared to other types of swimming pools.
A fiberglass pool will eventually need to be refinished later down the line, but thats certainly not something to worry about when buying your pool. In fact, your pool should be at least 20 or 30 years old before you see a need for refinishing.
Sometime after the 20 or 30 year mark, you might need to retouch or completely refinish your pools surface. This is obviously not something that you will do by yourself, so youre going to have to call in a professional to get this job done.
While refinishing your fiberglass pool wont be an easy DIY project, lets put into perspective how much less work that is compared to the other types of pools:
- Concrete pools need acid washing and replastering in less than half that time, which can cost over $10,000.
- Vinyl pool liners are easy to tear and can cost a small fortune to replace .
Meanwhile, fiberglass pools have a durable gelcoat that can go a few decades without refinishing.

We Dont Recommend Fiberglass Pools So What Do We Recommend For Florida Residents
We recommend that all of our clients refrain from doing fiberglass pools, especially in Florida. Fiberglass is an inferior product, and unlike what many may think, fiberglass is typically only used as a coating rather than an actual drop-in pool.
Instead of fiberglass pools, we highly recommend a plaster pool with a tile waterline or an all-tile pool.
These types of pools are going to be the better option for Florida homeowners, and ultimately, are going to save you both time and money. All-tile pools are going to be stain resistant and also unaffected by changes in temperature or chemical products, which means less maintenance.
When you go with a plaster pool with a tile waterline, the tile above the waterline is going to protect the pool structure. Plus, you can choose from different kinds of tile in order to make your pool exactly what you want. Theres natural stone tile, ceramic tile, porcelain tile and also glass tile.

How You Maintain Your Fibreglass Pool
Its common knowledge that pools are filled with water and have a certain amount of chlorine or salt in it to keep it clean. Pools are exposed to harsh elements throughout the day and spend a majority of their time in direct sunlight. If a pool isnt maintained correctly, it can compromise the interior surface and problems may occur. A simple way to extend the lifetime of your pool is by cleaning and maintaining it on a regular basis. You can decay the protective coating of your pool if you use inadequate doses of chemicals, this will reduce the longevity of your pool substantially. The surface of a fibreglass pool is virtually nonporous, making them chemical, stain, algae, and bacteria resistant which means less time and money spent on keeping them clean. Fibreglass pools can be looked after effectively with little effort from the homeowner. They are the easiest pools to maintain on the market today. A small amount of pool care is enough to keep your pool looking great throughout the year and for many years to come.
Fiberglass Pools Are The Most Durable And Damage Resistant
Concrete pools look beautiful, and they can take a myriad of shapes. But theyre susceptible to one very pesky problem: cracks.
Eventually, the plaster on the walls of a concrete pool will begin to crack from years of chemical exposure, ground movement, and general wear and tear.
But with fiberglass pools, none of that is a problem. And its all thanks to their unique 6 layer structure that we mentioned earlier.
Fiberglass pools are flexible compared to concrete pools, and because of this, theyre nearly immune to cracking. Any cracks that do show up are just surface cracks on the gel coat. All of which are cheap to repair and usually only appear every 10 years or so.
And since the gel coat of fiberglass pools is also nonporous, it offers more protection against chemical and water damage.

What About Concrete Pools
Concrete pools are easily the most pricey out of the three pool options. Like fiberglass pools, concrete pools can last around 50 years. But, they require a lot more upkeep. Its easier for algae to grow in the rough texture of your concrete pool than on the sleek surface of a fiberglass pool. Plus, youll have to get it resurfaced about every 5 years, increasing the overall amount you spend on the pool. So, concrete pools are best for individuals who want a custom shape and dont mind the regular resurfacing.
Do Fiberglass Pools Crack In Cold Weather
Regardless of the type of weather climate you have, a fiberglass swimming pool will perform great. Fiberglass swimming pools are designed in a way that allows them to expand upwards when water starts to freeze during winters. The upward expansion means that any frozen water will not press against the shell of your pool which causes cracking.

How Durable Are Fiberglass Pools And How Long Do They Last
After years of working with hundreds of inground fiberglass pool customers, we have found that our clients research several key factors when preparing for their project:
- the amount of pool maintenance required
- how long they can expect their fiberglass pool to last
Today, we are going to discuss the latter, and share with you what we know about the durability of inground fiberglass swimming pools.
So, let’s get started!
Long before we began manufacturing fiberglass pools, we installed them .
At the time of this writing, we at River Pools have installed over 1,000 inground fiberglass pools throughout Virginia and Maryland since our humble beginnings in 2001. Most of these pools were produced by many of the major fiberglass pool manufacturers in America.
Based on our experience, this is all you need to know about the durability of fiberglass pools: if a fiberglass pool is manufactured, installed, and maintained correctly it will last many, many decades.
In fact, many of the first fiberglass pools installed in the ’60s and ’70s are still fully functional today…and that was with antiquated methods and technologies!
With that said, there are some variables that will determine the life expectancy of your fiberglass pool and definitely merit some research on your part.
Fiberglass Pool Design Choices
When looking at fiberglass swimming pool design options, youll see a variety of shapes to choose from including:
A freeform-shaped pool just means that its not linear and that it resembles a kind of lagoon or uneven shape that is perfectly at home in many modern backyards. This splashy-looking shape lacks symmetry and frequently employs dramatic curves that add a bit of fun but may also cut into the amount of swimmable space inside the pool itself.
Kidney-shaped pools are also a good option for a more modern design, but it can be challenging to find a pool cover for this shape. Rectangular pools are another popular option for those looking to maximize their swimmable space, but these shapes can look severe in specific environments.
Fiberglass pool designs often incorporate steps, curves, seating, hot tubs, and other features like tanning ledges. Its also not uncommon to see pools that range from a few inches deep to almost nine feet deep at their deepest point.
The designs printed on the interior of a fiberglass pool are endless, but often resemble tile, stone, or other high-end finishes. Most fiberglass pools are a delightful shade of blue that makes the water look very inviting, but its possible to get different colors.

How To Keep Your Fiberglass Pool From Fading Prematurely
Even 20 years after installation, your fiberglass pool’s gelcoat should still look excellent if properly manufactured and properly maintained. Any color lightening would be gradual, even, and barely noticeable.
Premature or uneven fading of the gelcoat surface of fiberglass pools is almost always because of improper care of the pool’s water chemistry.
To extend the life of your pool, keep your water chemistry levels within the recommended ranges.
- calcium hardness
Develop a consistent weekly routine of checking these levels and adding chemicals as needed to balance the water chemistry.
