Once everything is in place, its just a case of keeping your pool running under normal conditions for about a day. However, if the pool water level has decreased more than the bucket water level, you probably have a leak.

Tips For Finding A Leak Somewhere In The Vinyl Liner

This may not be an easy task. The best piece of advice I can give here is to be patient.; A leak can be anywhere inside the pool and there is not one soul on the planet that can find some of these so dont be too hard on yourself if you dont find it quickly. Heres what I do listed from first to last:

  • Turn off the pool pump and let the water get completely stillYoull need to be able to see the bottom of the pool as clearly as possible while you are standing outside of the pool. I think I found the leak.
  • While you are standing outside the pool, inspect the pools bottom all the way aroundMost above ground pools have sand or earth based bottoms and coving. When there is a leak in the vinyl, the water usually leaks out in the ground somewhere underneath the pool. In most cases the leaked water travels through the sand/earth bottom and causes the earth to wash away leaving small valleys or divots or holes in the pools bottom that was once flat. Some of these washed away areas under the pool are visible and will tell you where the leak is in the liner. If you see something like this, its time to get in the pool .
  • If you still havent found the leak, its time to play manta ray. Very slowly swim very close along the bottom inspecting every square inch of the pool liner. If at any time you see something that may be a hole, shoot some dye in the area and see if the dyed water draws into it in order to verify the leak.

    • Enclose fittings that are easy to access. Also, the lights, stationary skimmers,;pumps, and valves should be safe from kicks, throws, push, and knocks from elated visitors.
    • Hang enough signage in proper locations.
    • Provide barriers to access to the area where the fragile accessories like filters and pumps are located.
    • When purchasing accessories, make sure to choose fittings that have hydrostatic relief plugs. Such fittings redirect excess leaked water, back into the pool.
    • Some owners place pressure gauges in the inlet and outlets of the pool to compare pressure differences between two points. It is important to have such gauges as pressure differences can be used to detect a leak on time and therefore fix it before it gets worse.

    Professional leak detectors use items like electrical probes to track the sources of least resistant connections. These send them audible frequencies letting them know where the voltage is weak.;

They also might use a pressure method where they can tell where the plumbing is losing water pressure.

How To Find A Hole In A Pool Liner

Unless the hole or tear is as big as a coin, finding the hole where the leak is coming from in your pools liner might feel like an impossible task. Dont worry, its doable; you just need a lot of patience, perseverance, and change of clothes, because youre going to get wet.

To determine if your pool is actually leaking or just losing water due to evaporation, the easiest way to do it is via a bucket test. For this, you will need the following materials:

    • A plastic bucket.
    • Painters tape, waterproof crayon, or any waterproof marker
    • Stones or any heavy object that can prevent the bucket from toppling over

Once you have all those materials, heres what you need to do:

  • Turn off all the pool equipment to make the pool water as still as possible.
  • Fill up the bucket with water, making sure that there is around an inch or more of space between the surface of the water and the buckets rim.
  • Place the bucket as close to the pool as possible. Prevent it from being knocked over by placing the stones or the heavy object inside. Its important that this bucket is close to the pool to make sure that it gets an equal amount of heat.
  • Fill up the pool with water to its usual level. On average, a pool will only lose about a quarter to half an inch of water each day due to condensation. Note that this amount would vary, depending on your location.
  • And if diving for leaks is something you or anyone you know cant do, your only course of action is to get a professional to do the job for you.

My Water Leaks To A Certain Level And Then Stops Whats Going On

If you are losing water and then it seems to level off at some point, this can help you determine where the leak is originating. For example, if you close the skimmer valve and the water drops below the skimmer and keeps going, its probably not the skimmer. If your water dips below an underwater light and then stops leaking, thats a good indication of where youre losing the water.

If your water stabilizes at a certain point, try using the dye test in areas around this level. Look around for small debris or movement around a certain areathis is a good indicator where a crack or void may be sucking water.

If your water level dips to the bottom of the skimmer and stops, you most likely have a suction line leak, most likely directly under the skimmer. If the pool water level goes down to the bottom of the return jets and stops, this means you have a return line leak, most likely directly by the wall jet return fitting although it could be anywhere in the return line.

    Check The Pools Equipment First

To check the pools equipment first is the easiest. When looking for a leak in an above ground pool, the hardest place to find it is somewhere in the vinyl liner. To avoid any frustration, inspect the equipment first . Follow this checklist first. The leak may be outside the pool.

  • Clean the equipment areaIf the pump/filter area is cluttered or overgrown, clean it first. Pull out all the weeds and store the pool toys, outdoor items and rocks/mulch away from the equipment. If there is an ant pile that formed under the pump, kill the ants and clean area.
  • Turn on the pumpSome leaks will leak more when the pump is on. Since it is easier to see a bigger leak, youll want the pump on.
  • Inspect the general area for signs of wetnessWater is wet. Duh! So it stands to reason that any signs of wetness are your best signs for a leak.
  • Look closely at everythingWhen I say closely, I mean get down on your hands and knees and look at all the components, hoses, fittings, and lids for drips. Sneaky leak alert: Pay close attention to the area directly underneath the pools pump. Pumps have shaft seals that can leak straight down into the ground and sometimes there will be no visible ground moisture.Have a dry towel handy in case something is questionable.
