For example, getting a pH reading around 7.2 to 7.6 in 10,000 gallons of pool water would take roughly 21 pounds of baking soda. This would also increase the Total Alkalinity by roughly 150 ppm . And thats way too much!
But if we wanted to increase the pH of the pool by 0.5, we could use roughly 12 ounces of soda ash. That would only increase the total alkalinity by roughly 8 ppm.
In other words, use baking soda to increase alkalinity and soda ash to increase pH.
How To Add Baking Soda To Your Pool

Are There Any Risks With Putting Baking Soda In Your Pool
While theres no risk using baking soda in your pool, there are risks to having high and low alkalinity.
You might notice corrosion in and around your ladders, liner, tiles, or other parts of your pool. This is likely due to low pH and alkalinity for long periods of time.
And if you see scaling or a build-up around your pool equipment, this could be caused by high pH and alkalinity. And it means your water is hard.
All you have to do is keep the alkalinity between 100 and 150 ppm and the pH between 7.4 and 7.6 as often as possible. Test your pool water daily and adjust your chemical levels when needed.

The pH will be too high
Baking soda is a base and will thus raise pH levels. Baking soda has a pH of 8.3 which is above the recommended level of 7.8 at the maximum pH. pH levels greater than pH of seven can damage the pool paint, tile and equipment.
Parts of the pool will be damaged
If you have a pH that is too high, it will damage the surface of plaster or vinyl pools and make them slippery for swimmers to stand on. The pH will also damage the metal in stainless steel pool components, which can lead to rust and corrosion. Besides that, it will corrode the pools tile and liner.

A pH of 13 or 14 can also significantly reduce the efficiency of chlorine to disinfect water, which will cause a higher risk for bacteria growth in pools.

Alkalinity Increasing Product Vs Baking Soda
Expect to pay $20 for a 16 lbs bucket of commercial alkalinity increaser whereas you can find a 15 lbs bag of Arm & Hammer baking soda for $8. So the package sizes are slightly different but youre paying $1.25 per pound of commercial alkalinity increaser and $0.53 per pound for the baking soda.
Whats the difference between the two?
A commercial bucket of alkalinity increasers ingredient list typically states sodium hydrogen bicarcarbonate as its main ingredient which is the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry name for sodium bicarbonate which is also known asbaking soda.
So for the most part an alkalinity increaser is just sodium bicarbonate possibly with an extra ingredient or two either for marketing purposes or for an actual benefit. I checked the safety PDF safety data sheet for one particular alkalinity increaser and it referred to a Trade Secret in the section that specified product composition and ingredients. But the main ingredient is still baking soda.
Having said that, heres a comparison as to how much alkalinity increaser you will typically need to use compared to baking soda to increase alkalinity by 10 ppm for every 10,000 gallons of water.

How To Raise Ph By Using Baking Soda In Water

The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, with 0 representing acidic solutions like battery acid and 14 representing alkaline solutions like liquid drain cleaner. Baking soda rests around 8.4 on the pH scale, slightly above the neutral mark of 7. The effect of baking soda will be influenced by the current pH of your water–you will not be able to raise the pH above 8.4, but you can raise the pH to a more neutral level if it is below 8.4.
Measure the pH of your existing water. Insert the strip into the water and let it rest for 10 to 30 seconds. The amount of time you need to hold the strip in the water will depend on the brand of the strip; follow the manufacturers instructions if in doubt. Use the chart that came with your pH strips to compare color and determine the pH.
Add baking soda to your pool. If the pH is under 7.2, you will need to add 3 lbs. of baking soda per 10,000 gallons in the pool. If the pH is between 7.5 and 7.2, add 2 lbs. per 10,000 gallons. If the pH is above 7.5 then dont add any.
Raise the pH of your hot tub if the pH falls below 7.2. Add 1/3 cup per 500 gallons per decimal point you need to raise the pH. For example, if you have a hot tub that holds 1,000 gallons of water and has a pH of 7.0, you would need 1-1/3 c. baking soda.
Make your drinking water slightly alkaline. Add 1/4 tsp. of baking soda to 1 gallon of water. Drinking slightly alkaline water is purported to help dieters lose weight.

This means you will need to add roughly nine pounds of baking soda to a 20,000 gallon pool to raise the alkalinity by 30 ppm and achieve the minimum alkalinity goal of 80 ppm.
Add the baking soda directly to the pool, let it dissolve and give it time to distribute through your pool’s water , test, and add more baking soda if needed.

Baking Soda And Ph Levels
Adding baking soda will also raise your pool’s pH level some, but if your main goal is to raise the pH versus simply raising alkalinity, we recommend using soda ash in lieu of baking soda. Adding six ounces of soda ash to 10,000 gallons of water will raise the pH roughly 0.2, while adding the same amount of baking soda will have a negligible effect on your pH.
Note that soda ash does also raise alkalinity along with pH. That six ounces of soda ash will raise your alkalinity by about 5 ppm, so only use soda ash if you want to raise alkalinity and pH.;
