Most pool owners have probably heard about the sock method as an effective technique to remove rust stains. But do you know how to use this method?
First, wear protective eyewear and gloves because youre about to deal with harsh chemicals. Once your safety is in check, take a clean sock and add a cup of granular acid such as sodium bisulfate, also known as dry acid, to the sock.
You can also use ascorbic acid in place of sodium bisulfate. Tie the sock tightly to prevent the acid from getting out.
If the stains are far down at the bottom of the pool that your hands cant reach, you can use a pool pole to lower the sock and hold it over the stains.
Do this for about five to fifteen minutes, checking often to see the results. Be careful not to leave the sock on the stains for too long since it may lead to a reverse stain. A reverse stain is where the previously rusted spots become brighter than the surrounding areas.

Most rust stains will disappear by rubbing a large vitamin C tablet over the stain. Alternatively, put about 20 tablets in a Ziplock bag and hammer them into a powder. Simply sprinkle the powder over rust stains and brush vigorously to get rid of the stain.

I learned too late that a metal problem may occur with Bacquacil, and Iâm assuming it is metal, but I donât know. The gunite seems pitted at the stain, as it is rough to the touch. I donât have a test kit yet, so canât give numbers. I did have an algae problem, which has cleared up with Bleach treatment.
