What To Look For In A Robot Pool Cleaner
A robotic pool vacuum is a totally self-contained electrically powered unit that works independently of your pools pump. They have motorized wheels or tank-like tire treads to firmly grip pool surfaces. Robot cleaners meticulously scrub the walls and waterline, capturing countless volumes of debris in their onboard filter canisters.
To find a pool cleaner thats right for you, there are three main questions to ask:
Customer Service And Support
Polaris has a very comprehensive collection of how-to videos. These videos are meant to help you learn more about their specific pool cleaners.
There are how-to videos on specific products, such as how to install a Polaris pressure pool cleaner and how to reduce hose tangling on a pressure pool cleaner, among others.
The provided videos are super easy to understand because they are both verbally and visually descriptive. This makes pressure side pool cleaner installation a breeze.
The parts of Polaris pool cleaners will at some point give in to wear and tear.
Polaris knows this, and thats why the brand has included a resourceful search section on their website for finding the parts you require.
You can easily look for replacement parts by simply dialing in a keyword or part number in the search bar. For example, you can search for a back-up valve or all-purpose debris bag.
You can easily reach out to the company when you want to make inquiries through email, fax, phone, live chat, and social media.

Shorten The Hose Length
The first step in Polaris pool troubleshooting for tangles would be to examine the hose length. You do want a little play in the hose so the cleaner can move smoothly, but a too-long hose will have a difficult time swiveling along with the cleaner.
Its simple to figure out how long the hose wants to be.
If its too long, youll have to cut it.
Lifetime And Accessory Costs
The lifetime price of the pool cleaner and the features and accessories that come with it made up 20% of our overall score.
Most cleaners are compatible with a range of pool pumps and attachment types. Therefore, the odds are low that youll be unable to find the right accessories to get your cleaner to work. Still, many companies offer accessories for their vacuums, such as leaf bags or pH testers, that connect to the pump tubing.
When looking at the cost of your pool cleaning tools, you should factor in the replacement cost for parts plus accessories. Many units require filter changes, tread replacement, and other routine upkeep. Some accessories can help you cut down on lifetime costs too, like a programmable timer that you can set to only run the pool cleaner when you need to which can help you save on energy costs if you choose an energy efficient model. Most pool cleaners are going to consume around 200 watts per hour, so try to avoid models that are up closer to 1,000 watts per hour. Just dont forget about your pool cleaner completely remember to clean it every once in a while too.
Instead of looking at the up-front price of the unit, consider the long-term or lifetime costs, and make your purchasing decision accordingly. At the same time, you can compare that amount to the investment youre currently making in cleaning your pool by hand.

Fastest Pressure-Side Pool Cleaner
Sometimes speed is the name of the game, and thats where Pentairs Kreepy Krauly Racer enters the picture. This is a large, high-speed unit designed to clean your entire pool as quickly as possible, but it also comes with some unusual features like LEDs that provide added visibility during nighttime cleaning. Thats a surprisingly rare feature on pressure-based pool cleaners.
Other notable features include a front rotating brush, a huge intake, and about 1/3 more cleaning power than many of Pentairs other units. If youre looking for a fast and effective cleaner, this is one of the best models to consider. The lower price doesnt hurt, either.
Some customers reported defects right after ordering, but they have a good warranty so be sure to use that. We didnt experience any issues with the models we tested.

Installation Requirements: Parts And Pipes
Some automatic pool cleaners only have one part to worry about. Others have a variety of accessories and additional components, such as flaps or covers that can help them clean particularly stubborn areas.
The question here is a trade-off between effectiveness and lifespan. Cleaners with additional parts tend to be better at specific roles, such as cleaning the deepest parts of a swimming pool. Conversely, cleaners with fewer parts tend to last longer and need less maintenance than their complicated counterparts.

Top 10 Dolphin Pool Cleaners: Reviews
The Dolphin Premier is the best robotic pool cleaner for most in-ground pool owners. It is powerful , leaves the pool sparkling clean , and its built to last .
The Dolphin Premier is decked with features that improve cleaning performance, save energy, and make pool maintenance easier for pool owners.
Our favorite is the CleverClean navigation system.
Instead of navigating the pool in random patterns as cheaper robot cleaners do, the Dolphin Premier follows an efficient cleaning path that ensures full pool coverage without going over the same areas repeatedly.
Not only does it clean the pool faster , it saves a lot of energy while doing it.
The Premier has multiple tools to attack dirt and debris.
The onboard vacuums easily filter out dirt suspended in the water. But its the pair of scrubbing brushes that tackles the hard-to-remove algae and scale stuck on the pool floor and walls.
Two oversize filter cartridges pick up all this debris with small debris like pebbles and bugs going into one filter and fine particles of sand and silt going into the ultra-fine filter.
You can swap these two filters for a bag when the pool is full of leaves, acorns, and other large debris.
Filter access is at the bottom, so its a bit tedious to remove the filters.
The Dolphin Premier comes with a couple of extra features for added convenience: a weekly scheduler that allows you to set an auto-cleaning schedule and a full filter indicator.

The Polaris F9450 Sport Robotic In-Ground Pool Cleaner Vacuum is a great solution for in-ground pools. It’s easy to put together and place inside of your pool.
Part of its ability to clean in-ground pools effectively is because of its Vortex Vacuum Technology.
This feature allows it to pick up 4x more debris than other robotic pool cleaners.
Cleaning the robot is also easy. It has an access top that can be opened to access the filter. This filter is in cartridge form.
You can simply pull it out, then replace it with another when it starts to wear down.
Once you’ve replaced the cleaned filter, you can insert it back inside of the robot and swiftly close the top access. Your robot cleaner is ready to be used again.
The larger filter has 4x the capacity of other filters. That means you have to clean it less.
The robot can spend more time in the pool actually cleaning it.
This robot is also capable of 4WD. Its larges wheels enable it to climb up the walls, scrub the bottom of your pool’s floor, and get into the grout lines of your pool.
It also enables the robot to get over obstacles. Whether it’s pop-outs, stairs, or forgotten pool toys, this robot will have a hard time getting stuck.

Polaris 65 Pool Sweeper
Although its only usable in above ground pools, the Polaris Vac-Sweep 65 is the most affordable pool cleaner that we reviewed. Since its only good in pools up to five feet deep, this isnt going to apply to every situation. We found it to be a rather effective pool cleaner all together, but it exhibited many of the same problems we saw from the Vac-Sweep 165 in the seventh position of this list.
This unit kept spinning in a circle which caused it to get tangled in the hose. It required untangling and resetting at least every day. For us, the extra headache doesnt seem to be worth the money you save.
- Only good for above ground pools
- Only good up to 5 deep
- Spins in a circle and gets tangled in the hose
Hayward Wanda The Whale: Best Pool Cleaner For Above Ground Pools
Fun, playful and backed-up with cleaning power, Haywards Wanda the Whale looks as good as it cleans. On the manufacturers website, it says this turbine cleaner is designed to clean the bottom of all shapes and sizes of in-ground and above-ground pools. However we think Wanda the Whale is best suited to above ground pools. Thats because this pool cleaner wont travel up the sides of your pool to give them a scrub.
Wanda the Whale is fitted with a one-of-a-kind turbine system which helps it travel across your pool floor. While creeping across the pool floor, it pulls water up from the bottom as it moves. The unique whale design is fitted with a deluxe bumper ring which is said to rid friction and prevent it from bumping into walls, steps and ladders.
Wanda the Whale scored 3.8 stars out of 5 on Amazon from just over 1,100 reviews. Users of this device said they were “very impressed” because it works “way better” than a more expensive model. However the same user mentioned they did have to buy an additional hose because the one Wanda the Whale comes with isnt long enough for their 30ft pool.
One user of the machine pointed out that the machine works brilliantly for picking up algae and small pieces of debris, however it is not designed to pick up leaves.
