Leaky Liners Create Profound Problems
Normal evaporation can lower a pools water level by ¼ to ½ an inch per week. A few external factors can increase that rate, such as: warm pool water warm, dry air windy conditions and heat generated by sunlight.
But if youve noticed your water level dropping by an inch or more per week, it may be an indication of a leak. If you know how to patch a pool liner, you may be able to find and fix a pool leak, and a patch may last for a while. Eventually, though, youll need to replace that liner to prevent damage to the underlying structure of your pool, your deck, and your yard.
Measure The Sidewall Slope And Hopper Width
This ones a little tricky.
Sidewall Slope:Extend one measuring tape across the back end of the pool. Run the telescoping pole down the sidewall of your pool until it hits the bottom. Thats where the slope ends. Lay the pole down onto the coping on the side of the pool. Extend your second measuring tape from the spot where the pole hits the pool edge to the first measuring tape to find the sidewall slope.
Determine the Hopper Width: Subtract both sidewall slopes from the full pool width to determine the hoppers width.
Important: We cant stress this enough. Measuring instructions online, whether written or in a video, only go so far. If youve never measured for a pool liner before, and you have any doubts about doing it yourself, we highly recommend hiring a professional to measure for you. If you measure incorrectly, and get the wrong size liner, youll be out a lot of money for something you cant use, and that cant be altered.
How Much Does An Underground Pool Liner Cost
Pool liners come in a range of thicknesses, and this affects the price you will pay. For example, a 28/20 mil 14 by 28 pool liner will average $600 while a thicker 28/28 20 by 40 pool liner will average $1,700. Removing Your Old Pool Liner
- Before you start MAKE SURE its not going to rain for at least 3-5 days.
- First you will need to drain your swimming pool completely. You can use a portable sump pump or rent a commercial pump from your local home improvement store. Renting a sump pump will probably be faster, try and get one with at least a 1.5 inch hose and expect it to run for at least t hours depending on your pool size. Make sure to get enough drain hose so that the water you are draining will not return to the pool area running it directly into a storm drain is best.
- Remove all faceplaces and step gaskets. A cordless drill will expedite this job:)
- Now is the time to cut liner into sections for easier removal. You can cut it into 2 to 4 pieces to make it easier some also cut around the liner, 6 below the bead track, removing the bulk of the liner then returning to remove the small amount still in the bead track.
- Inspect floor and walls for anything that might damage your new swimming pool liner. Take the time to make sure the floor is smooth and in good condition duct tape all seams on the walls so they wont show through the liner.

Installation Of The Inground Pool Liner
1. Upon opening the liner box, you will notice that the liner is marked with arrows . Place the entire liner box in the shallow end near the break line and note which direction the liner box shows as the deep end and which is the shallow end. Keeping it rolled up, remove the liner from the box ensuring that it is facing the proper direction. After positioning the liner, remove the red arrows. Unfold the liner to both sides going towards the shallow end corners.
2. Continue to unfold the liner, carrying it to the break line of the shallow end and down the transition slope in order to rest the liner on the pool bottom in the deep end/hopper.
3. Back in the shallow end, line up the bottom corners of the liner accordingly. Position and adjust the liner until all points in the shallow end are aligned. To prevent the positioned liner from moving, secure the liner around the bottom of the entire shallow end with sand bags or water tubes.
4. Next, grasp the corners of the deep end portion of the liner and unfold as you did in the shallow end. In the same manner, position and align the deep end of the pool. Climate any wrinkles by pulling and positioning the liner accordingly.

Measure Depths At Several Spots
This is where measuring can become complicated. Most inground pools have varying depths and angles that are easier to measure when the pool is drained. If your old pool liner has pulled away from the permanent floor of your pool, you may need to cut into it to get the accurate measurement from top to bottom. Only cut it if you are confident you are replacing it.
You should get at least three depth measurements. Get one in the deep end, one in the shallow, and one in the middle. Measure from the liner track in the coping to the floor of the shallow end. Do the same with the hopper. Also, measure a mid-point on the slope. Using string here is also helpful.

Prepare The Pool Site For The New Liner
1. Before you jump on to installing a brand new liner, you should wait for at least 3-5 dry days.
2. Store the new liner in a warm environment for 2-3 days before fitting, this will ensure the liner is as pliable as possible.
3. To prepare the site, you will need to first drain the pool completely.
4. Closely examine the interior of the pool. Remove anything that might damage the liner, such as stones, gravel and protruding pieces of cement.
5. Prepare the liner underlay if necessary. A liner underlay will provide some insulation and protection against any abrasions between the liner and the floor and wall.
6. If installing an underlay, cut the underlay to the size and shape required, using something similar to a Stanley knife.
7. Butt the joints together so they do not overlap and tape the seams with specialised liner underlay tape. Use caution when choosing the tape colour may affect the liner over time so it is important to only use specialised tape.
8. Ensure that the central plumbing of the swimming pool is turned off.
9. Measure the pool liner to ensure that it is of the correct specifications to your pool. Its okay for the liner to be slightly smaller than the dimensions of the pool, as this will allow it to be stretched during the installation so it will perfectly fit your pool, crease-free.
10. Remove the swimming pool faceplates, such as the skimmers, main drain, returns and step gaskets.
