Swimming is a fun activity, but pools require plenty of maintenance. One part of owning a pool is closing it in the winter to open when the weather improves. Professionals charge up to $300 USD for this service, so you can save money by doing it on your own. It isnt difficult to do as long as you know how your pool is set up. It needs to be well-cleaned with a working pump. Once you have the water conditioned, you can cool down in crystal-clear water all season long.

Public Swimming Pool And Spa Drowning Prevention Program:

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in children ages 1 to 4 in Ohio it is the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths in children ages 5 to 9 and 10 to 14. Survivors of severe drowning incidents can experience long-term disabilities including memory problems, learning deficiencies, and loss of basic cognitive functioning. Recognizing the usefulness of this information for preventing drowning incidents, the Ohio Department of Health has initiated the Public Swimming Pool and Spa Drowning Prevention Program to determine the frequency and circumstances of these occurrences and to identify opportunities to prevent serious injuries in the future.

Any incident associated with a public swimming pool or spa facility that results in death, serious injury, or assistance from emergency medical personnel shall be reported to the licensor within seventy-two hours following the incident. Serious injury is defined as an injury that does not require immediate hospital admission but does require medical treatment, other than first aid. Voluntary reporting of other injuries is highly encouraged.

Turn your pool equipment back on. This includes priming the pump and turning on the circulation and filtration system. If you have an air relief valve on your filter, make sure to open it to bleed the air from the system. Once water spurts out, close the air relief valve. Check the equipment for leaks or unusual noises.

When You Should Open Your Swimming Pool

Its march 20th, 2013 as I write this. We just came through another snow storm. However it wont be long before it starts warming up. This is really the most important factor when deciding when to open your pool. Temperatures will vary from state to state here in the northeast. But as soon as it starts to reach 60 degrees or higher on a regular basis you should open your pool.

Not because you love to swim in terribly cold water, but because with temps in the 60s your pool will begin to fill with algae. Cleaning a pool once the algae has bloomed can be a daunting task. If you treat and close your pool properly and want to open a pool that will be easy to clean up and maintain, than you need to open it early.

What If You Have A Heated Pool

The same rule applies: youll still want to wait for consistent 70-degree weather. You just may not be able to swim in your pool if it isnt heated.

Whether your pool is heated or not, plan on opening up your pool 2-3 weeks before you plan on using it. Thatll give you enough time to troubleshoot equipment and clear up any water chemistry issues.

If you dont have a heated pool and want to learn more about how to keep your pool heated so you can open it earlier, check out our pool heating guide here.

When Is The Best Time To Open My Swimming Pool

Well, it’s that time of year again, folks. And after the winter we had here in Virginia, I say good riddance!

But with the warmer weather, the swimming bug’ will soon be affecting all of us.

In fact, as I write this article and sit in my car at a parking lot in Yorktown, Virginia, the temperature outside is about 93°F degrees on April 7. Wow, now that’s what I call skipping spring!

But during this time of year, many pool owners debate about when they should open their pools. When is too early? When is too late?

This is a legitimate concern, and this article will discuss my thoughts on the matter.

This is my general, all-encompassing rule of thumb:

When the temperature is consistently above 70 degrees during the day, it’s time to open the pool.

Why so early, you ask? Well, let me give you 5 main reasons:

  • Algae
  • Springtime Means Its Pollen

Ah, spring! Take in a deep breath of that fresh and warm breeze then start sneezing because the air is full of pollen.

Depending on where you live, the accumulation of pollen can affect when you want to open your pool and the amount of cleaning you will be doing. Youre going to want to make sure you dont let pollen sit in the pool for too long, as it will help the growth of algae and other bacteria. You can contact Pool Craft to come for a pool cleaning if the pollen hits your pool!

What Month Should You Open Your Pool

We surveyed 1,900 pool owners and found a majority of pool owners open their swimming pools between May 1st and May 15th.

In the U.S. pool industry, the unofficial start of the pool season is Memorial Day Weekend . Thats when pool stores are the busiest . Its a good idea to open your pool before that to get a headstart on the season and to beat the crowds in the pool stores.

When Should You Open Your Pool

7 Steps for Opening Your Swimming Pool

As a general rule of thumb, you should open your pool when the outside daytime temperature stays consistently above 70 degrees . 70 degrees is still a little too cold to go swimming, but its not too cold for algae.

As the weather starts to warm up, algae can start to grow in your pool water especially if you use a mesh pool cover and the water is exposed to sunlight.

Springtime is also pollen season, and that can start collecting in your pool . So to help prevent algae and stop pollen from collecting in your water, open your pool and run your filter and pump when daytime temps are a steady 70 degrees.

Is It Too Early To Open Your Swimming Pool

As temperatures begin to finally rise in March, many pool owners will be getting eager to open up their pool for the summer season. But is it too early?

The short answer is: Yes youll want to wait a bit longer.

But that doesnt mean you cant start prepping now, so that you have everything ready once its time.

So, when is the best time to open your swimming pool?

Generally speaking, in our region, you should wait until daytime temperatures are consistently at a minimum of 70 degrees. Here in Central PA, its not unusual to experience freezing temperatures and snow in March. So, its generally best to wait until after the spring season begins.

    Should I wait until summer?

No, not necessarily. Again, generally speaking, its better to open your pool sooner. As temperatures begin to rise, algae is more likely to form. The longer you let the algae grow in late spring and early summer, the more work your pool opening may require.

What can I do now to get ready?

This is where you can get a jump on your pool opening, and save yourself some time, before its actually time to open it.

Start by making sure you have all the necessary tools and supplies ideally in a location where youll be able to easily retrieve them on the day of your pool opening. Have a hose for siphoning and/or a pool-cover water pump ready, which youll use to remove any water from the top of your pool cover.

If youre not sure what supplies youll need to open your pool, just give us a call.

Sunlight Through A Pool Cover Is Ideal Territory For Algae

Swimming pools open for the season

Yikes! You didnt want to open the pool too early but now those hot afternoons have resulted in a thriving collection of algae in your pool.

Be aware that the longer you wait, the more algae is going to be there waiting for you when you pull the cover off. Even waiting for an extra day or two could be the difference in a couple of hours of work to get your pool clean and ready for use.

Another reason algae can thrive in the spring is because
