S Of Adding Stabilizer To Your Pool Without Skimmer

How To Add Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer) To The Pool | By Waterdrop Pools (Naples, Florida)

These steps also teach you how to add cyanuric acid to above ground pool.;;

Here are the steps to follow if your pool has no skimmer:

1. Add warm water in a bucket to about halfway

2. Wear your safety gears like gloves and goggles

3.; Add the recommended dose of CYA into the bucket

  • You need to check your pool size and brands instruction when adding the treatment.;
  • Ten ppm of this acid is recommended for 10,000 gallons of water, which means adding 13 ounces of CYA.;

4. Pour the mixture around the pool try to cover all corners.

5. Run the pool pump for a few hours to ensure that the acid mixes with the water. It is like stirring the solution in your swimming pool.

Note: Even when your pool has a skimmer, avoid pouring this acid directly without mixing with water.;

Why Does Stabilizer Need To Be Balanced

I dont need to tell you the importance of chlorine. And because CYA shields your pools chlorine from being eaten up by ultraviolet rays, it’s an important chemical.

If your CYA levels dip too low, your chlorine will be completely gone in a few hours and your swimming pool will become susceptible to bacteria and;algae growth.

If the pool stabilizer levels get too high, however, it overpowers the chlorine and makes it less effective. It can even lead to chlorine lock, making chlorine tests read negative even when you know there is some in there.

The only pools that dont require CYA are indoor pools.;

Unless your pool is exposed to sunlight, it should be able to maintain the right chlorine levels fairly well.

The Best Time To Use Pool Stabilizer

You will probably only need to add pool stabilizer to your pool water once a year. No, that is not a misprint.;

Once. A. Year. Amazing right?;

Pool stabilizer not only stabilizes the chlorine in your pool but is pretty darn stable itself. It just stays and stays and stays in your water, working hard, doing its job, and not getting used up .

Its because of this chemical longevity that you dont need to add it very often to your pool, which is good news for your schedule and your wallet. The only caveat to this is if you use a combination product like stabilized chlorine.;

The Upside Of Pool Stabilizer

Pool stabilizer has one job and it does it well. Its job is to keep the chlorine in your pool longer than it would be without help. In fact, in the presence of pool stabilizer, chlorine can last 3 to 5 times longer than without it.

It should be no surprise that increasing the lifespan of chlorine is a major benefit. That stuff is not cheap and your pool needs it all the time. If you dont use stabilizer or let your levels drop too low, youre opening up a Pandoras box of possible bacteria and algae growth that can take over your pool and destroy your water chemistry in a matter of hours.

How Much Pool Stabilizer Does Your Pool Need

How Much Stabilizer To Add To Pool

You should check the stabilizer levels in your pool continually, and it should remain between 30ppm and 50ppm at any given time. If your stabilizer levels are off, then you can add some when it is needed. We suggest double-checking when you notice that the stabilizer is too low.;

If you add stabilizer and it turns out that your test was just off, you will probably end up having to drain some pool water to get the stabilizer down to an acceptable level.;

Chlorine Stabilizer Not Dissolving

Stabilizer not dissolving can be pretty frustrating and is a common complaint amongst swimming pool owners. If your pool stabilizer wont dissolve or your cyanuric acid is slow to dissolve, read on.

First of all, were talking about powder or granular stabilizer and not liquid chlorine stabilizer. If youre using liquid cyanuric acid, presumably you have no need to read this article as liquid stabilizer mixes immediately with pool water and doesnt need to dissolve.

The reason your chlorine stabilizer is not dissolving isnt because youve done something wrong. Its because cyanuric acid is just not a fast dissolving chemical.

Saying that, there are a few tricks you can do to encourage the cyanuric acid to dissolve a little faster but overall, it takes as long as it takes when youre using granular or powdered cyanuric acid.

What Is A Pool Stabilizer

Pool stabilizers are important to maintain a clean swimming pool. Along with other factors for keeping a swimming pool clean, like pH, total alkalinity, and water hardness, pool stabilizers need to be adequately regulated and tested. They are derived from a chemical compound called cyanuric acid , and come in several formsgranular or liquid, or in chlorine tablets called trichlor, or shock, called dichlor. When chlorine and cyanuric acid are combined in shock or tablet form, it is referred to as stabilized chlorine.

The addition of a cyanuric acid stabilizer to pool waters treated with chlorine is necessary to protect the active life of chlorine and its derivatives in the waters from the damaging effects of the suns ultraviolet rays. When exposed to UV rays, chlorine evaporates rapidly. Therefore, CYA specifically acts to inhibit the degradation of chlorine in the water caused by sunlight. Without it, within two hours chlorine is reduced by as much as 95 percent in the shallow areas and to 75 percent in waters up to 4.5 feet. Percentages can vary depending on pH and water temperature, but the rapid decomposition of chlorine will occur nonetheless, and with it, the health of your pools water.

When Do You Need To Add Pool Stabilizer

If youve tested the pool water and determined that it has less than the minimum amount CYA levels for your type of pool or hot tub, you will need to add more pool stabilizer.

Luckily, CYA doesnt evaporate like other pool additives, so its not likely to decrease unless its diluted by adding extra water to the pool or from rainfall.

Adding Cya To A Pool By Hanging Chlorine Stabilizer Filled Skimmer Sock In Front Of Return

Adding Stabilizer Conditioner to Your Pool

That led me to look around for another option, and find method three. Instead of putting the sock full of granules in the skimmer basket, hang it in the pool in front of a return jet. Make sure it doesnt touch the walls of the pool.

This worked well, and was much faster to dissolve the conditioner. I did have to give it a bit of a nudge every few hours by pulling the sock out of the water and squeezing it a few times. Using this method, it ended up taking about 36 hours to fully dissolve the entire 20 oz dose of stabilizer. Pretty good, but still I felt like I could find a better way.

Just like with every other item you own, maintenance is essential for your pool. There are times you would need to treat your pool by adding chemicals to stabilize it or clarify the water. These chemicals can be a bit harsh on your body, so its not advisable to jump into your pool immediately. However, to learn how you can use your pool again after applying stabilizers, we advise you to read on.

What Is Pool Stabilizer A Beginners Guide

Adding germs killing agents like chlorine is a regular task for a pool owner or pool maintenance guy to keep the pool a cleaner one. But if you dont use pool stabilizer with chlorine or other cleansing chemicals, all your effort, money, or time will go in vain. Plus, it adds possible risks to your health. How Does Cyanuric Acid Work

Pools with very low or no CYA will have significant chlorine demand. This is because unstabilized chlorine is destroyed by UV rays very quickly. This leaves your pool vulnerable to contaminants unless you continually add more chlorine.

Instead of making chlorine upkeep your full-time job, add cyanuric acid instead. Once the chlorine in your pool water has transformed into sodium hypochlorite ions, the CYA binds to those ions, preventing them from breaking apart when exposed to UV rays.

This is how it preserves your free chlorine and allows it to destroy bacteria three to five times longer than it would without cyanuric acid.

That extra time is especially important because at the same time CYA stabilizes chlorine, the bond between cyanuric acid and sodium hypochlorite ions also hinders chlorine a bit.

How To Raise Stabilizer In Pool Water

When to Add Stabilizer to a Pool (and How!)

If you need the pH level in the pool to rise, you need to add pool conditioner or stabilizer directly to the pool. As usual, follow the directions because some manufacturers may have you dilute the powder in a bucket while others suggest that you sprinkle it directly on the pool surface. If you have a sand filter, the product may suggest that you add it to the skimmer.

Make sure that you are adding the correct amount of CYA because you can actually over stabilize your pool. Test you CYA constantly and double check your pool size before adding so you know how much CYA you need.

If you have the pool drained, still test your water before adding CYA because some places use CYA in their water treatment. Test consistently and carefully to keep your water safe and healthy.

When it comes time to add stabilizer to raise your CYA level, you need to first find out how much stabilizer you need to add. Usually, about 13 oz of stabilizer will raise the CYA level of 10,000 gallons of water by 10 ppm.

Put the stabilizer in the skimmer basket while the pump is running, and keep it running for one day after you add the stabilizer. Dont backwash or clean the filter for a week after adding the stabilizer.

You must remember that stabilizers dissolve in the pool very slowly and you wont be able to accurately test your pool or get a solid reading on the CYA for several days. Wait a week before testing again and only then add more if you need to.

A Note About Cryptosporidium

You will also need to lower cyanuric acid levels if your pool is contaminated with cryptosporidium.

Also referred to as crypto, this parasite can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal illness, and is typically introduced to pool water through feces. Its a common problem in public pools and splash pads where babies go into the water with diapers not made for swimming or splashing activities.

Crypto is resistant to normal chlorine levels, and contamination requires immediate intervention. The best way to eradicate crypto from your pool is to lower your CYA levels below 15 ppm, then hyperchlorinate your water. Backwashbetter yet, replaceyour filter so you wont be flushing lingering crypto right back into your pool water.

Which Stabilizer Is Quicker To Dissolve: Powered Granular Or Liquid Cyanuric Acid

If youre in a hurry and dont want cyanuric acid granules on your pool floor or need to raise your stabilizer levels in a hurry, I would suggest you use liquid cyanuric acid.

Liquid stabilizer will mix with the pool water immediately. In fact, you can expect it to be fully mixed within a few hours of adding it to the water. The drawback however is that liquid cyanuric acid is expensive compared with other forms of chlorine stabilizer. Its much more economical to use powdered or granular pool stabilizer.

Granular chlorine stabilizer is the most common form of cyanuric acid for your pool and is the most economic way to buy it. As mentioned earlier, it will take at least 48 hours and up to a week to fully dissolve.

Powdered cyanuric acid is not so common and it may not be available to buy in your area. Its reported to not dissolve any faster than granular stabilizer. Although it is a fine powder, when mixed with water, it will often clump together forming a large solid mass of stabilizer.

How Long After Adding Stabilizer Can I Shock The Pool

There is no ironclad rule, but you should never shock the pool immediately after you add stabilizer. The cyanuric acid in pool stabilizer can lock and waste the chlorine. Add too much shock and chlorine to the pool and you risk rendering your chlorine useless.

It takes up to 3-4 days for pool stabilizer to evenly spread throughout the pool and dissipate. Test the chlorine level in your water before you shock the pool to find out if it is even necessary. Wait an additional 1-2 days if your chlorine level is fine.

Never shock your pool after adding stabilizer if the pH and chlorine levels are balanced. That would waste the chlorine you may have to drain and backwash some water to fix the problem. Keep testing strips at your home so that you can quickly check your chlorine and alkalinity before you shock the pool.

When Not To Use Pool Stabilizer

How to add Stabilizer to your Pool

As we mentioned above, using pool stabilizer in indoor pools is a waste of time and money. It can also actually hurt your chlorines productivity. Since indoor pools are not exposed to sunlight, the stabilizer is an unnecessary addition to your chemical soup and wont actually do any good.

The same goes for hot tubs. If you own a hot tub, you probably already know how important it is to use a hot tub cover: to protect the chlorine in your spa, to keep the heat in, and to keep unwanted debris out. Stabilizer is completely unnecessary in hot tubs and should never be used.

Why Stabilizers Need To Be Balanced

But in spite of how important a pool stabilizer is, having the wrong amount in the pool can itself be a problem. As RentSmartUSA warns, you can either have too much or too little stabilizer in your swimming pool. And both will have adverse effects on the pool.

When stabilizer levels in a pool are too high, it overpowers the chlorine and makes it ineffective. This is because the Total Dissolved Solids in the pool escalates to the point where it impairs chlorines ability to kill bacteria and algae.

Too much CYA can also lead to a condition called “purple” or copper cyanurate. And it will cause chlorine block. This is a situation where chlorine tests read negative even when there is chlorine in the water.

Too little CYA, on the other hand, will leave the pools chlorine unprotected and in a few hours, it will be depleted by the sun. This leaves the pool exposed to bacteria and algae. Excessively low levels of CYA mostly happen when there has been heavy rainfall or after a large pool party where the pool water level was significantly lowered. Pool stabilizer levels dont easily drop because CYA is not easily depleted.

Can You Swim In A Pool With Low Stabilizer

Chlorine Stabilizer. Chlorine stabilizer helps keep your pool’s chlorine working longer. Stabilizers are most effective in extremely hot climates where the sun oxidizes most of the chlorine in the pool, rendering it useless. That’s why more chlorine is needed in warmer weather.

Also Know, is pool shock a stabilizer? Also known as pool conditioner or simply pool stabilizer, you can buy this chemical additive as either liquid or granules. It’s also often called cyanuric acid, a chemical that may be included in chlorine tablets or sticks or shock .

Herein, what to do if cyanuric acid is low in pool?

However, you still need to lower the cyanuric acid level to keep your chlorine working as it should. If the CYA levels that are more than just a little high, diluting your pool water is the only way to lower them. Allow splashout to bring down your water level, then top off your pool with fresh water.

Is baking soda a pool stabilizer?

Baking Soda is used for raising the total alkalinity of the pool, which is the key to keeping the ph in balance. It’s not a stabilizer.

When To Use Pool Stabilizer

  • Use pool stabilizer when you find that your chlorine levels are deteriorating too fast. If you feel as though you are increasing chlorine, but the tests show there are still low levels of chlorine in the pool, add some stabilizer.;
  • Use pool stabilizer to help you save money on chlorine. If the stabilizer is balanced in the pool, you should go through a much lower amount of chlorine in the course of a year.;
  • Stabilizer should be in the pool if you are going to shock the pool for any reason. If you notice that your pool needs to be shocked or you have an algae problem, check the stabilizer level. Shocking the pool will be much more effective if the stabilizer levels are where they need to be.;
  • If your pool gets a lot of sunlight, you should be checking your cyanuric acid levels quite often. A swimming pool exposed to direct sunlight will deplete its chlorine supply very quickly. You may also want to use chlorine that is stabilized.;

How To Add Cyanuric Acid To Your Pool

What is Pool Stabilizer And How To Add It (2021)

If youre using dichlor or trichlor sanitizer , you probably wont need to add any extra CYA to your pool water. Whenever you add either of those sanitizers, you get a little boost of cyanuric acid right along with them.

When using stabilized chlorine, you may notice cyanuric acid levels creeping up over time, and need to reduce the CYA. If you wish to avoid that problem, you can use chlorine that is not stabilized and add the CYA separately so you have a little more control over it.

Youll be happy to know that if youre adding cyanuric acid to your pool separately from your chlorine, you may only need to add it once or twice per year.

Be aware that because CYA is an acid, it can cause damage to your filter and to your pool, especially if you have a vinyl liner. Even though some cyanuric acid product labels may instruct you to add it by pouring it straight into the pool or filter, dont. We recommend a safer way.

Youll need:

To add the chemical to your pool:

  • Fill the bucket at least halfway with warm water.
  • Put on your goggles and gloves.
  • Add a dose of cyanuric acid to the bucket.
  • Note: To establish 50 ppm, youll need to check the product instructions for your pool size. As a general rule, to gain 10 ppm of CYA in a 10,000 gallon pool, youll need to add 13 ounces of cyanuric acid.
  • Pour the contents of the bucket directly into your skimmer.
  • Happy Swimming!
