Set Up Your Filter And Pump
Replace the drain plugs and other parts, including your pressure gauge, on your filter and pump. Your filter should have one major drain plug and your pump may have one or two.
If you have a multiport valve, make sure you replace the air bleeder, sight glass, and pressure gauge.
IMPORTANT:;Turn your multiport valve handle to Filter.
SMART TIP:;Check the lid o-ring on your pump housing. Bend it with your fingers all around to check for any cracks in the rubber. A dry, cracked o-ring will cause your filter to pull air, which is not good. If this is the case, you should replace it. If the o-ring looks good, I suggest applying a Teflon-based o-ring lubricant to create a good seal and making it easy to remove the pump lid when needed.
Re-install any additional equipment, including a booster pump, heater or chlorine dispenser, and;make sure all drain plugs are securely in place.

This when having an extra set of hands will be a big help. Youll need to lay it flat somewhere to clean it without getting cover cleaner into your pool water, and youll have to get it to that flat spot without dragging it over any rough surfaces.
Have your partner stand on the opposite side of the pool from you to help you lift and fold the cover back and forth on itself, like an accordian.

When it’s time to open your swimming pool, many people have the reflex of immediately taking a water sample to the local pool store. ;This is actually a mistake. ;
See, after a winter season, more then likely the pool will be a little green by the time you remove the cover and re-fill it with water. ;So before you even think about adding any adjustment chemicals to the water, we suggest the following 3 items to add when opening a swimming pool.
Why Mesh Pool Covers Are Not Ideal
Some pool owners prefer using meshed safety pool covers for reasons better known to them. One big problem with meshed pool covers is that they allow debris to collect inside the pool. In many cases, swimming pool water may appear to be dark green or black in colour due to pool algae that is formed from too much light allowed in the pool, eating up free chlorine in the water.
To avoid these issues caused by meshed safety pool covers, I use and always recommend solid pool covers that won’t allow debris or the formation of swimming pool algae.

Step 1: Remove water and debris from your pool cover
Remove any leaves and debris from the winter pool cover. If youre using a solid cover, drain the water off the cover using a submersible pump. Clean the cover thoroughly and let it dry in the sun before storing it.
Step 2: Remove your winter pool cover
You should do this carefully without getting any debris that might remain on top of the cover into the pool. If dirty water and debris eventually fall inside the pool, you can remove it later.
Step 3: Clean and stow away your pool cover
Lay your cover out flat on a soft surface from your pool, like a field or lawn. After that, spray your cover off with a garden hose and brush away loose debris. Endeavor to remove all your winter drain plugs from around the pool, including return jets and step jets if you installed them. Replace your return lines with the proper eyeball or jet fittings.

Remove Your Winter Cover
Gently remove the pool cover from the top of the pool by folding it over in sections until its completely folded at the end of the pool.
Its much easier to do this with a friend than to try doing it aloneyou can each stand on opposite sides of the pool and fold the sections evenly.
Be careful when removing the cover not to let any debris slip off and fall into the pool. This will shorten your cleaning tasks afterwards!
