Add A Fountain To An Existing Pool

How To: Pool Deck Complete Remodel! | Concrete Overlays Coming 2019!

The cost to add a fountain to an existing pool is $450 to $2,000. Fountains are a popular water feature for modern pools. They add the sound of moving water, which can be tranquil and appealing. They come in multiple shapes and sizes. Fountains can be installed at one end of the pool, sending water straight up. They can also be smaller, installed on the sides of the pool, and send water in arching lines into the pool.

Step : Prepare The Surface

So, you’ve made the decision to resurface your concrete. The first thing you need to do is clean the surface.

You have to remove all the loose, damaged concrete if there is any.

And you have to remove any dirt, debris, mold, and mildew.

The two ways I do that are by either lightly grinding the concrete or by pressure washing the concrete.

If you grind the concrete use a face mask and hook up a vacuum to the grinder to reduce any dust.

Pressure washing will work just fine for cleaning as long as you don’t have any loose and spalling concrete.

Completely clean the concrete afterwards by vacuuming any leftover dust or rinsing off any loose dirt left over by the pressure washer.

If you washed the concrete, let it dry out for 24 hours before proceeding.

What Color Options Are There

One of the best things about resurfacing is that it allows you to bring life to a colorless pool deck. Popular colors for pool decks include shades of brown, tan or gray that blend well with the natural surroundings. However, the color choices are limitlessweve seen white, blue, black and bold color combinations used on pool deck coatings.

There are many coloring options for your pool deck refinishing project. Here are the most common choices:

  • Integral coloring is mixed into the material. It provides consistent coloring throughout that makes a great base for your new pool deck.
  • Color hardeners are a dry shake powder applied to the surface of the concrete, usually before stamping. They provide a bit more intense color palette, and improve the surface strength.
  • Surface-applied color are dyes, stains, and tinted release agents that can be used in conjunction with the first two options. Topical colors create variations that help make textures look more like the natural materials they resemble.

Tip: Some contractors can blend custom colors or even do hand-applied special effects that will replicate bluestone or other materials.

Choosing The Right Cleaner

There are dozens of deck-cleaning products on the market. Most contain one of the following four chemicals as their main ingredient. Each is effective for different types of stains.

Sodium hypochlorite

This chemicalchlorine bleachis good for removing mildew but isnt effective on dirt or other stains. So mix it with an ammonia-free detergent. Thoroughly rinse the deck after using this chemical because it can eat away at the wood, resulting in fuzzing and premature graying.

Sodium percarbonate

When mixed with water, this chemical forms hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate, which acts as a detergent. It is good for removing dirt, mildew and weathered wood.

Oxalic acid

This is effective in removing iron stains and the brown-black tannins that frequently occur with cedar and redwood decks. This acid is commonly found in deck brighteners. Oxalic acid isnt effective against mildew, so you may want to use it after cleaning the deck with a bleach-based cleaner.

Sodium hydroxide

Also known as lye, this is the key ingredient in most finish lifters or removers. Dont leave it on too long, or it can eat away at the wood.

Be very careful when working with any of these chemicals, especially when theyre in their most concentrated form. Wear the proper safety equipment and follow the manufacturers directions to the letter. Rinse the surface thoroughly and allow it to dry before refinishing.

Both strippers and cleaners evaporate rapidly and become ineffective on hot, dry days. A cool, overcast day extends the working time of these solutions. Besides, you’ll want to make this messy job as comfortable as you can. This is hard work, so expect to sweat. You can work on the deck in sections over several days if you don’t have an eight-hour block of time to do the whole deck.

Pool Plaster Repair Cost

The cost of repairing pool averages $500 to $5,000. Many concrete pools are plastered when built. Pool chemicals cause the plaster to yellow, spall, crack, and corrode. When this happens, the pool can develop other issues like leaks. Repairing the plaster ranges from patching small sections to complete resurfacing. The larger the pool and the larger the cracked areas, the higher the costs.

Step : Mix And Apply Resurfacer

You’re now ready to mix and apply the concrete resurfacer to your pool patio.

I’ve used all three of these concrete resurfacing materials with good luck.

  • Ardex CD – Get this at your local concrete supply store.
  • They all mix and are applied with either a steel trowel or a squeegee.

Follow the mixing instructions on the bag. Usually you mix 3.5 quarts of water with 1 bag. Mix for 2 minutes until it’s lump free and kinda like pancake batter.

Cost To Add A Waterfall To A Pool

The cost to add a waterfall to a pool is $1,000 to $3,000. Waterfalls make very attractive water features for many pools. They can be installed on any pool type in any area. They are frequently installed as part of a larger landscaping project but do not have to be. They can add the sound of running water and the appearance of a natural rock formation. Some waterfalls can also act as water pumps, circulating water through the pool.

Improving Functionality Of Your Backyard Resort

    6. Install slide or diving board.

Maximize family fun and fitness with a pool slide, diving board, or more attractive diving rock. Your kids will thank you, and so will young-at-heart adults.

Keep in mind that adding this kind of accessory is not possible on every existing pool. To help prevent obstructions and promote safe use, your pool must already have certain depths, space, and configurations to properly accommodate a slide, diving board, or diving rock.

    7. Reduce depth.

Your pools deep end can be more usable by reducing it. In the past, pools were often built with 8-foot deep endswhether or not they actually needed the depth for a diving board.

However, shallower pools are now the trend. They provide more area for people to stand, play, and engage in water activities. In addition, with less water capacity, shallower pools save some time and money to heat, circulate, and sanitize as well.

Engineering will be required, and a depth do-over is more practical on a budget if your renovation plan will include a re-plaster.

Pool Repair Cost By Type Of Repair

Repairs may not lead to a full pool remodel. However, it may be considered a remodel if the need for repair is extensive enough. Repairs may also be combined with a larger remodel. Average repairs that may be carried out during a pool remodel include fixing leaks, repairing equipment, and making repairs to your deck and surrounding area. Your pool may need many types of repair, but not all may be necessary for your remodel. The most common types of repairs and their costs are below.

    Type of Repair
    $2,000 – $3,000

Live Somewhere Cold Read This First

If you live in the kind of place where you joke about having winter eight months out of the year, concrete maintenance can be a chore and a half. Thats because exposure to cold weather adds a slew of additional cracking opportunities for your deck.

It also means you need to be careful about when you repair your cracks. If you live in an area with spring blizzards and summer hail storms, you need to pay attention to the forecast before you even consider doing repairs.

You need at least 24 hours of non-freezing conditions before laying concrete. You also want to make sure your repair concrete is just as cold as or colder than the ambient air temperature when you place it.

Cold concrete has a longer curing time, giving it more strength and durability in freezing conditions. Warm mixtures dry faster, which means less overall strength.

Above all, be sure to read your concrete manufacturers instructions when laying in a cold weather area. They will often have the best recommendations for their product.

Time To Get Out The Big Gun

If you have a pressure washer in your garage, youre halfway to a clean pool deck already. If you dont own one, you can often rent one from your local hardware store .

Even if you cant invest in one now, a good pressure washer is something to think about in the future. They make cleaning concrete a snap, whether its your pool deck or your driveway.

    Pool Deck Remodel

Generally, expect to pay anywhere from $4,500 up to $15,000 for a pool remodeling job. Basic pool resurfacing will run on the lower end of that range while plumbing and technology upgrades will fall on the higher end. A complete backyard pool transformation can run up to $100,000.

    Cost To Expand A Pool

The cost to expand a pool averages $30,000 to $70,000. Expanding a pool is a serious project. If the pool is concrete, a large part of it must be destroyed first. Then, the new area is dug before the new walls can be poured.

If the pool is fiberglass, you need a new shell and more excavation. Vinyl pools also need a new liner, although part of the old frame may still be used, with a new section added onto the additional area. This means expansions sometimes cost as much as a new pool installation.

Why Is Concrete A Better Choice Than Other Materials Used For Pool Decks

Generally speaking, concrete is the most popular pool deck material because of its durability, high-quality finish, and resistance to spills, stains, and weather changes. Concrete coatings are also available in limitless colors, designs, and patterns; and can work well with any décor. Here are some other materials used for pool decks and how they compare to concrete:

    • Concrete Pavers. While concrete pavers are available in various styles, colors, and designs, they are not seamless. They can move and shift independently depending on the surface stability and possibility of weeds growing in the joints. Concrete pavers can also be costly to buy and time consuming to install .
    • Unglazed tiles, otherwise known as Saltillo pavers or quarry tiles. These are sometimes used for pool decks, as they are slip resistant and low maintenance. However, they can be expensive, require timely maintenance, and are limited when it comes to colors and design options.
    • Wood. While wood offers a unique aesthetic appeal, its expensive. It also requires exceptional care in installation, finishing, coating, and maintenance.
    • Bricks. Highly affordable, bricks come in various shades of red, brown, beige, and other colors. However, they are prone to chipping and may injure barefoot swimmers.

Cost Of Regrouting A Swimming Pool

How to Resurface A Pool Deck, Driveway or Patio – Part 1

The cost to regrout a swimming pool ranges from $8,000 to $15,000. Grout is the material that is installed between tiles. It is a mixture of Portland cement and aggregates. This material is important for protecting the tiles from damage. If it cracks and begins to come loose, it must be dug out and replaced. This requires the pool to be drained and is extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive.

    When learning how to refinish a wood deck, determine whether your deck needs to be sealed and the appropriate types of exterior stains and sealers to choose from.;

    • Conduct a water drop test on the deck by pouring a few drops of water on a deck board. If the board absorbs the water, the deck definitely needs sealing for protection. If the water beads, the wood is already sealed and may only need cleaning, unless you want to change its appearance.
    • Stains color the wood and give your deck a new look. Most new types of exterior wood stain are formulated with sealants, so you only need to apply one product.;
    • Semitransparent stains or sealers let the wood grain show through and can be most effective on pressure treated lumber.
    • Avoid such clear finishes as varnish or polyurethane as they can degrade when exposed to sunlight over time.

Take care to clean and prepare the deck to ensure the best results before deck refinishing.

Tip: Do not use a metal brush on cedar or redwood, as the bristles may scar the soft wood.

If you plan to stain the deck, sand the surface before application to make the wood better absorb the coating.

    • Use an orbital sander to remove any old gloss and smooth out any rough areas on decking boards.
    • You may need to use a sanding sponge on the railings or balustrades.
    • Use 60- or 80- grit sandpaper on the main deck boards, and use 80- or 100-grit on the handrails.;
    • After sanding, vacuum the deck thoroughly to ensure that dust does not settle on the new finish.

    Step : Broom Finish Texture

As soon as you trowel or squeegee the resurfacer to an area about a couple broom widths wide, drag your broom across the surface to give your pool patio a new texture.

Don’t wait to broom it, the material drys fairly quickly. Do a small section and broom it, then do another small section and broom it. It helps to have help like I do in the picture, then you can just keep moving, slowly from one end to the other.

    Pool Tile Repair Cost

How to Resurface a Concrete Pool Deck

The cost to repair pool tile ranges from $800 to $5,000. Many pools have tile around the edge below the coping or covering the entirety of the side walls. The chemicals in the pool can cause this to crack or discolor. You can repair this in many ways. You can chip out and replace individual tiles, and then regrout the section. You can also remove and replace larger sections or regrout larger sections to remove cracks. The more tiles involved in the repair process, the higher the total costs.

    Cost To Replace Pool Plumbing

The cost to replace pool plumbing is between $800 and $1,000. Pool plumbing can mean many things. It can mean the drain at the bottom of the pool, gas lines running to the heater, or connections to pieces of equipment like the pump. While this is plumbing, it is best installed and replaced by a pool specialist and not a plumber. The cost of replacing pool plumbing depends on how accessible that area is. Some places may require draining the pool to reach, raising costs.

    Step : Repair Damaged Areas

If you have any cracks, chipped areas, broken concrete, or spalled concrete, now is the time to fix your concrete.

If the cracks are hairline, there’s nothing you can do about those, just leave them and resurface over them.

If the cracks are 1/16″ wide or more, you have to fill them with a repair material like Dap flexible concrete crack sealant.

If the crack is wider than 1/4″, I recommend filling some of the crack with dry sand or foam backer rod.

Leave about 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the crack to fill, that’ll work good for repairing the cracks.

As soon as the sealant levels out, sprinkle some dry sand on it to give it some texture.

The resurfacing material needs the texture to bond to.

Just keep in mind, whenever repairing cracks in a pool patio, they may still be moving cracks. If the cracks move at all, the resurfacing material may show a hairline crack where the existing crack was.

If you have any chipped or spalling areas, you can use the resurfacing material to fix these with.

Just mix up a small batch and fill these areas after you’ve removed any loose concrete.

Let the patched area completely dry then smooth the area with your grinder or a rubbing stone.
