How to Calculate Swimming Pool Volume or Gallons

GPM Calculator

We have shown that the oversized pool pumps we have been talking about are more harmful than good.; You can keep a proper size pool pump running for more hours which will furnish a cleaner pool as opposed to an oversized pool pump that requires too much energy to allow running for the same amount of time of a correct sized pool pump.

So how to get the ultimate efficiency from your pool pump without empting your wallet. Lets look at the following example to calculate what your needs are from a pool pump to achieve the above mentioned goals.

1.The amount of water in your pool we need to think of is the pool volume times 2 ; For example if your pool holds 15,000 gallons it needs to circulate 15,000 more gallons in a 24 hour time frame.; Now since GBM are how the pump specs are measured we need to do some math.

2.You take the volume of the pool which is 30,000 gallons of water, divide by 24 and that equals 1,250 gallons an hour.; You then take 1,250 and divide by 60 which comes to 20.8 GMP.; So we have shown that 20GPM what your pool pump needs to be circulating.

Since normally in a 24 hour period the pool pump only is operating about 8 hours that would mean that for 16 hours a day the water is not circulating.; It is during the time it isnt circulating that most of the negative things happen to your pool.

A few of the things that happen during the non-circulating time are:

·The pool becomes contaminated with algae

·Debris and dust particles accumulate

Why Pool Stores Dont Recommend Bleach

If you go to a pool store, you will find out that they do not suggest that you use normal chlorine as a bleaching agent. They will recommend you to use their products. Most pool stores are selling chlorine tablets that are combined with other chemicals, and they are released slower, which makes them last longer. While this is certainly an easier solution, stabilizing the bleach reduces the effectiveness of killing the microbes in the pool.

On the other hand, Clorox bleach is considered to be one of the most common bleach products for pools. Therefore, bleach can also be used in the pool and it is a very safe product. Clorox bleach consists of a 5.7% concentration. Keep in mind that when you add liquid bleach to a pool, it is still needed to add a little amount of stabilizer with it. This is because the sunlight can eliminate the bleach molecules in the pool if it is not added.

Now Youve Got Some Feet To Stand On

Alright, so you know how many gallons your pool contains. And guess what? Unless you move or get an entirely new pool, you never have to do this math again. So you can forget the last ten minutes foreverjust make sure you keep that final number handy for when youre adding chemicals or buying equipment. And hey, wouldnt it be nice to dive into thousands of gallons of clean water right about now? Enjoy.

How To Estimate Swimming Pool Gallons

You can calculate the volume of a circular swimming pool by multiplying 3.14 times the radius in feet times the radius in feet times the average depth in feet times 7.48. Thus, the formula is:

volume = r2 × average depth × 7.48

The first part of this formula determines the area, and multiplying by the depth finds the volume. Multiplying by 7.48 finds the gallons of water per ft3 of water.

How Much Water Does Your Pool Hold

To figure out the size of the pool pump that we require, we first need to know how many gallons of water your pool can hold. Provided that you already know this, you can skip to the next section. If you dont know how many gallons your pool can hold, we recommend using our pool volume calculator to figure that out.

Just in case, if you would rather calculate the pools volume yourself, you can use the volumetric formulas below for the most common pool shapes. If you have a different shape or multiple shapes, you might want to click over to our previously mentioned pool volume guide.

How To Calculate Pool Volume

Like a novice cook who needs to know how much of each ingredient to add to a dish, pool owners need to know how much of their maintenance products they need to add to their water. In order to do this properly, pool owners must know their pool volume how much water is actually in their pool.

Calculating your pool volume is essential to correctly balancing the water. Making only rough estimates can result in errors and end up causing issues. Over-estimating is a waste of money; under-estimating will result in unsanitary water. If the volume of your pool isn’t in the original documentation, it’s easy to calculate it yourself.

Pool With Variable Depth

Some pools come with varying depths and even have a gradual slope. If this is the case with your pool, you will need to do more calculations.;

The first step is to know the average depth of the pool. How can you calculate this? By adding the two variable depths, then dividing the result by 2.;

/2 = Average Depth.

If the one end is 2 feet and the other deeper end is 10 feet, the average depth would be

/2 = 6 feet.;

The next step is to find the surface area of the pool. Then multiply the result by the average depth. For example, if you have a 40 feet long pool with 14 feet width and 6 feet average depth, the volume would be as follows:

40 x 14 x 6 x 7.5 = 25200 gallons.

How To Calculate The Number of Gallons In A Pool

“How do I calculate the volume of a pool?”;This article will guide you on how to measure a swimming pool and calculate its volume of water. Let’s begin.

It is essential to know the volume of a swimming pool to make accurate chemistry adjustments. Even veteran pool professionals can eyeball a pool and estimate the volume of it…but how accurately? We have found through surveying many of our customers around the country, that pool volume estimationswithout measuringare often off by more than 2000-3000 gallons . On average, that’s about a 10% error. Ten percent!

That could mean 10% more chemicals used , or it could mean under-dosing the pool every visit. Neither are good outcomes, and will lead to water chemistry challenges.

Some pools are fortunate enough to have a specific volume on record . But many pools are not so fortunate. For those pools, we must estimate their volume by measuring dimensions and doing some calculations. There are several pool volume calculators available online, and our free Orenda App has a;Pool Volume Estimator feature that uses the formula provided in the NSPF‘s Certified Pool Operator training manual.

Square And Rectangular Pools

A square or rectangular pool with one constant depth is easy to measure. Simply multiply the length by the width and then multiply that by the depth. Few pools are shaped so perfectly, though. For a square or rectangular pool with varying depths, you must multiply the length and width, but then multiply that by the average depth. To calculate the average depth of a pool, add together the depth at the deep end and the shallow end and then divide by two.

Keep in mind that a pool is not generally filled all the way to the top. As you calculate the depth or average depth, only measure to the point at which there will be water. If you are a few inches off, it can skew your total.

Swimming Pool Volume Calculations

Pool volume is calculated based on length, width, and average depths. Basically we are trying to figure out the cubic area of the entire swimming pool, then multiply by a given volume of water per that cubic unit of measurement. Here are the multipliers, depending on the units of measurement you use.

  • 1 Cubic Foot = 7.48 gallons / 28.31 L
  • 1 Cubic Meter = 264.17 gallons / 1,000 L

The infographic above gives you the basics for those common shapes of pools. Obviously, free form pools that are not conveniently kidney-shaped are more difficult.

How To Calculate How Many Gallons Your Pool Has

How to Calculate Swimming Pool Volume in Gallons ...

If you dont know how many gallons your swimming pool has, just use the basic formula that well give you. The formula for calculating a pool area in square feet or meters is the following:

  • Length x width x depth x 7.5 = volume

By multiplying the length of the pool with width and depth gives the volume in cubic feet. Since each cubic foot has 7.5 gallons of water, multiply the cubic feet of the pool by 7.5 and you will get the volume of the pool in gallons.

If you have a round pool, then you need to multiply the volume of the pool by 5.9. For the oval pool, you need to multiply it by 6.7. I hope that you know now how to calculate the pool gallons. If not, you can use the calculator below in which you just need to type the basic data and you will get the results.

Now that you know how to calculate the volume of your pool and how many gallons you have, you now need to know how much ppm you have in your pool.

Done With Numbers Call In A Pro

Are you at the point where if you have to do one more math problem, youre going to just cover the pool and call it a year? We hear you.

If a pool volume chart or pool calculator doesnt work properly for you because you have an unusual pool shape, or you just want everything to be accurate to the decimal point, you can have a pool professional take the measurements and figure out the volume for you.

How A Pool Volume Calculator Works

You need to know some basics before you can calculate the pool volume. The basic elements include area, length, width, depth, height, volume, radius, diameter, and pi . So if you dont remember the basics, heres a quick recap.

The area of a rectangle or square is length x breadth

The area of a right triangle is length x width divided by 2

And the area of a circle is pi x r2

To calculate cubic volume, you will require the pools depth and the surface area. And to make sure these calculations are accurate, you need to divide your pool into sections by depth .

Another important part of your equation is one cubic foot of water has 7.5 gallons. So, to determine the total number of gallons the pool holds, you will have to determine the cubic feet measurement of your pool and then multiply the number by 7.5 to get the volume.

Once you have done these steps, you have to plug the numbers. If its still confusing, you should look at a pool care video course.

Come On Lets Be Measured About This

Unfortunately, I cant be in your backyard with a measuring tape. Really wish I could help out, but its just not possible. So before we go furthereven in this next step, where you wont need to crunch any numbers to find out how much water is in your poolyou have got to know what youre working with. And the type of measurements you need? Those will depend on what shape of pool you have.

For a rectangular pool, youll want to know how long, wide, and deep your pool is. Remember to measure both the shallow end and the deep end.

For a circular pool, you just need to measure across the middle, and measure how deep it is.

Note: To keep your calculations as straightforward as possible later, its best to round to the nearest foot. Dont worry, your calculation will be accurate enough for choosing a pump, adding chemicals to your water, and all that other fun stuff pool owners get to do. And if you are just going to use the charts in the next step, no need to measure your depth.

Knowing your pool size will save you a lot of money on your pump and your energy bill, but itll also help you find the perfect heat pump, like the Energy-Saving ComforTemp Pool Heat Pump 95,000 BTU to heat 18,000 Gallons. Calculating Volume Of A Round Pool

HOW TO CALCULATE GALLONS OF WATER IN POOL

Pools come in various shapes, and this section will focus on how you can get the water volume of a round or circular pool.;

The basic formula you should keep in mind is Pi x Radius Squared x Average Depth x 7.5. The result of this multiplication provides the volume in gallons.;

Pi is 3.14 and is a constant. The radius is half of the diameter. To get the radius of the pool, measure the distance from the broadest part of the pool and divide it in half to get the radius. Radius Squared means that the radius is multiplied by itself. For example, if the measured radius is 4 feet, the radius squared is 4 x 4, which equals 16.;

Lets use a practical example.;

If, for example, your pool is 12 feet in diameter. The radius will therefore be divided by 2.

12/2 = 6

To square the radius, you will multiply the radius twice.;

R x R = R Squared.

So for the 12 feet diameter pool with a 6 feet radius

6 x 6 = 36

The next thing is to measure the depth of your pool. Lets say that it is 8 feet deep. We will use the formula stated earlier .

So, the pools volume is:

3.14 x 36 x 8 x 7.5 = 6782.4 gallons.

Oval Swimming Pools And Spas

Oval swimming pools and spas are shaped like rectangles with rounded ends. To calculate the volume in gallons for oval swimming pools and spas:

  • Measure the overall length and width in feet.
  • Calculate the average depth by adding the depth of the deep end to the depth of the shallow end and dividing by two.
  • Multiply the overall length by the width, and then multiply by the average depth. Multiply that value by 6.7 to find the capacity in gallons.
  • How Much Bleach Do You Need For A 10000 Gallon Pool

    So, how much bleach do you put in a 10,000-gallon pool? To shock a pool with Clorox or bleach, you will need to use ½ gallon of bleach per 10,000 gallons of water to raise the level of chlorine to 5 ppm. To raise the chlorine level for just 2.5 ppm, it is recommended to use as much as ¼ gallon of bleach per 10,000 gallons of water.
