Three Key Elements Of A Pool Pump

Pool pump technology hasnt changed much in the past 2,000 years: water is sucked in and pushed out, creating a current that circulates the water in your pool. For our purposes now, we only need to consider three key elements of your pump: the motor, the impeller, and the filter basket.

  • Motor: This is your pool pumps power source. It’s what makes the pump work. The pool pump motor nameplate will provide information such as the horsepower, service factor , voltage, and more. Although these numbers all provide valuable information, the most important thing you need to know when buying a pump is the flow rate how many gallons per minute it can pump. You can obtain that information from the pump manufacturer.

  • Impeller: This is the fan-like part that the motor spins. As the blades whirl, they pull the water in one side of the pump and force it out the other.

  • Filter basket: All you need to circulate your water is a motor that spins an impeller. That’s what makes the water move. However, the filter basket is essential because it is your pump’s last line of defence. Any debris that slipped past the skimmer baskets or got sucked into the system through the drain will get caught in this basket so it doesn’t damage your pump.

Hayward Ec50ac Perflex De Filter

Unlike the previously mentioned Hayward DE pool filter, this filter can be used for both above round and in-ground pools of different sizes. There are 3 different models of this filter system available: the EC40AC, EC50AC, and the EC75A. Each model is a different size to be used in smaller or larger pools, according to your pool filter measurements.

This filter works very well to remove tiny particles from your pool water and give you the most beautifully clear water possible. In addition to small particles and debris, this filter system also works to catch algae. It generally manages to catch particles on the first pass through the filter without allowing many to pass by and go back into the pool itself.

The Perflex filter systems uses less resistance so that the use of your water and electricity is more efficient. Its efficient and dependable with reliable cleaning power that will make your pool much cleaner than many other types of filter systems. This is a comparable system to other DE filters available from other brands.

Getting De Powder In Your Pool

Few things are more frustrating than to see the very stuff that is supposed to be filtering your pool water leaking into the pool. ;The common culprit involved in DE powder going back into your pool is torn grids but there are a number of other causes as well. ;Here are a few things to check to help you troubleshoot this annoying problem.

Sand Cartridge Or De Pool Filter: What Is The Best Pool Filter For Your Swimming Pool

There are three main types of filters to choose from to keep your swimming pool sparkling clean all year round. These include the cartridge filter, diatomaceous earth filter and sand filter.

Sand filters and cartridge filters are the most popular of the three because they are small and inexpensive. The D.E filter, however, offers the best filtration by filtering;debris as small as 5 microns. For context, a micron is an abbreviated term for micrometer, or a millionth of a meter . This is about .00004 inches. For size comparison, a human red blood cell is about 5;microns;across. A human;hair;is about 75;microns;across .

All filters work in unison with the pool pump by filtering the water before it goes back into the pool. The sand, cartridge and D.E filters are all suitable for small to medium pools and each come with their pros and cons. Weve listed them below to help you out when youre selecting what pool filter to buy.

    Sand Filter

    Cartridge Filter

    • The filter of choice for most spas and small above ground pools.
    • Works in the same way that the pleated air filter works in your car by trapping dirt and particles.
    • Can capture debris as small as 10-15 microns.
    • Low impact on the water chemistry
    • Initial purchase and maintenance costs are higher than the sand filter.
    • The cartridges require replacing every 2-4 years.
    • The cartridge filter is not suitable for larger commercial pools.
    • Ideal for any small to medium sized pool.

How To Backwash The De Filter

This is a pretty simple procedure. After you have done this a few times, you’ll get to know what the normal clean filter pressure is for your system. This depends on pump horsepower, returns, etc. They all vary.

In this case, let’s say normal clean filter pressure runs around 22 PSI. If the gauge is reading 25 or 26 PSI, that just means the filter is doing its job and starting to get dirty. In this scenario, it would need to be 30 to 32 PSI to indicate that it needs to be backwashed.

Shut off the pump and position valve to “backwash.”

    Filter being backwashed.

  • Before you reposition the “multi-port” valve, be sure the pump is off.
  • Select the “backwash” position, then turn the pump on.
  • Backwash for three minutes. This will get a lot of the old DE powder out.
  • I usually return the valve to the “filter” position, run for another minute, and then backwash again for another minute. This ensures the filter grids are clean.
  • With the valve positioned back to the “filter” position and the pump running, you will add around four pounds of DE powder through the skimmer.
  • That’s it! You’re done. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge, and you shouldn’t need to back-wash for about a month.

    Return to “filter” position.

    Troubleshooting De Filter Systems

How To: Backwash a DE Filter

Be sure to check your DE pool filter throughout the swimming season to be sure that nothing is clogged. You can clean and unclog your filter by turning the system off and removing the grid part of the filter for cleaning. Rinse off the grid piece and soak it in a mixture of water and cleaner.

If you notice your pool water is cloudy and your filter isnt clogged, it may be because you arent running your filter system often enough. You should run your filter daily, but the amount of time you run it per day depends on the size and age of your swimming pool filter. If its old, it will most likely have to run most of the day, whereas if its newer, it should only have to run for part the day.

And The Best Pool Filter Type Is

    • Sand filters are least effective but also the least expensive to buy and use.
    • Cartridge filters are more effective but are more expensive to buy and use.
    • DE filters are the most effective but are the most expensive to buy and use.

Determining the best filter for your pool will mean determining your feelings on water quality, price and maintenance. Your best pool filter may be the largest filter you can afford, no matter which filter type.

So remember:;Go big! A sand filter that is oversized for your pool is a better purchase than an undersized DE filter. Larger filters require less maintenance and the filter media lasts longer. And when you really need them to clean up poor water conditions, larger pool filters will do so faster and better than smaller. They often prevent poor water conditions in the first place!

Two Numbers You Need To Know

The length of time it takes for all the water in your pool system to pass through the filter is called the turnover rate. To maintain healthy swimming conditions, your turnover rate should be approximately eight hours. To find the perfect pump for your pool, you must find the pump that can accomplish this feat. This number is measured in gallons per minute or litres per minute and is called the flow rate.

    • Flow rate: Determine the total amount of gallons your pool holds and divide that by 8, then divide that answer by 60. That number is the gallons per minute that your pump needs to move in order to filter all the water in your pool in eight hours.Additionally, if you have an in-ground pool, you’ll need a pump that is strong enough to overcome the resistance that is created by trying to force water through all the pipes of your pool. That number is measured in feet of head.

    • Resistance: Measure the distance between each skimmer and drain to your pump. Add those numbers together. Divide that total by the number of skimmers and drains in your system. That number is your feet of head.

Use these two numbers to reference pool pump flow charts to determine how much horsepower you will need to achieve a proper turnover rate for your particular pool.

    How The Filter Works

Pool water comes from the circulation pump into the filter where small debris particles are removed through depth or surface filtration, and then goes on to the heater or back to the pool.

A filter works through mechanical separation of water and debris through surface or depth filtration. Sand filters use special filter sand, cartridge filters pass water through a fibrous element, and DE filters pass water through a thin layer of diatomaceous earth that is coated onto a grid.

A gauge located on the filter or valve can be used to measure the back pressure or resistance in your filter system. When the pressure increases by 10 psi, the filter should be cleaned to reduce resistance and improve water flow.

Cartridge filters require disassembly and cleaning of the cartridge periodically to remove debris from the filter.

DE and Sand filters require periodic backwashing to remove debris from the filter. To accomplish this water is directed through the pool filter by a valve . Once the water runs through the filter, it flows to the pool heater or back into the pool. To backwash, the valve is manipulated to reverse flow and direct debris-filled water to waste.

    Time Cleaning Or Maintaining:

Hayward XStream 150 sq. ft. DE Pool Filter System with 1HP ...

In the ease of use category, sand filters are the undisputed winners. They are easy to operate and understand and easy to backwash, and you hardly ever need to go inside the tank for any reason. DE;filters, by contrast, require adding a fresh charge of DE;powder after each backwash, and every 6 months they will need to be opened up and hosed thoroughly and inspected for missing parts or damage. Cartridge filters can be very low maintenance when they are big enough, with cleaning needed only every 3-4 months, but if small, you could be opening up the filter every few weeks. Cleaning cartridges is not hard, but its going to be awhile; expect to spend at least 10 minutes per cartridge, hosing it carefully top to bottom. For best results with all filter types, use a pool filter cleaner annually to remove minerals and oily deposits.

    Purchasing And Disposal Considerations

DE can be purchased in various quantities at hardware stores, pool supply stores, and grain and feed supply stores. It is also available from many online retailers. Make sure to buy a product that is specified for your use. So-called “food-grade” DE, for example, is not the proper product to use in pool filters.

Because DE can potentially clog pipes, some cities and counties do not allow it to be dumped into sewer systems. To accommodate proper disposal, most pool DE filters include a separation tank next to the filter container. When the filter is drained or backwashed, the dirty water passes through a canvas strainer bag inside a small tank before it reaches the sewers or storm drains. Most of the DE is retained in this strainer bag, which can then be discarded with household trash.

What Is The Best Filter For Pool

Considering filtration efficiency, water volume capacity, ease of maintenance, cost of maintenance, cost of acquisition, the sand filters are the best filter for pools, followed by the cartridge filter. A sand filter can be used for large in-ground pools and may only require a sand change after two to three years.

Sand Filter W/ 1hp Above Ground Swimming Pool Pump

For small to medium above ground pools, this sand filter is easy to connect and effective for up to 18,000 gallons of water. It is only good for above ground pools and isnt meant for in-ground pools; even if they are spas or smaller pools.

6 different speed settings can be activated to make the filter work for you. It works with as low of pressure as possible to be more efficient and use less electricity. This is also a top-mounted system that requires you to remove pipes and plumbing to reach the sand storage area of the filter system. You can expect years of great service from this filter, as its made of strong materials that are weather-proof and heat resistant.

The high capacity sand bed is larger than many of the other in-ground pool filters. Because of this, it can extend the lifecycle of the sand and keep you from having to backwash the filter every day. You will also catch more debris at a time, which is great for pools that get very dirty from the environment.
