Homemade Pool Clarifiers You Need To Know
When pools get dirty due to one reason or the other, you need to clean the water without necessarily draining and replacing it with clean water. Such dirty water is not only unpleasant to look at, its also a sign that it might have bacteria and other microorganisms which can cause infections and diseases.
The standard cleaning method is usually running the water through a pool pump filter which would filter out the dirt from the water. However, these filters rarely clean out the germs or even completely clean out the water. As such, you need a better cleaning method to clarify your pool.
Some of the best natural homemade pool clarifiers include baking soda solution, bleach, white vinegar, lemon juice, rubbing alcohol and borax. Compared to commercial chemical clarifiers natural ones have enzymes that break down the dirt in the water making it easy and cheap to filter them out. The chemical ones are manufactured directly for clarifying pools.
Why Are All Pool Tiles Blue
Looking at the structure of water itself, science tells us about the way the water molecules work. When interacting with light, the molecules actually absorb red light waves, whilst reflecting blue light waves. This selective process is known as electromagnetic absorption and is the main reason that water appears blue.
What color should pool water be? The main determining factor for water color is the background dye in the finish. If you want green water, the finish should be green, brown, tan, or black. For blue water, the finish should be white, blue, or gray. The examples above are plaster finishes with colored dyes.

A Graduated Filter For The Sky
After lifting the exposure and adding a preset to squash the highlights and lift the shadows, my first task was to bring a touch more color to the sky. A Graduated Filter with the exposure and highlights knocked down slightly brought more blue. This was too clumsy, though: the vignette of the lens and the natural gradation of the sky was becoming exaggerated by the filter, so I needed to refine it.
This is where the Range Mask option becomes useful, as it allows you to target a filter so that it only affects certain parts of the image. If you choose Luminance, you are presented with a slider that’s different from most of the others in Lightroom: rather than a single tab in the center, there is one at either end. If you draw these tabs towards one another, the tones affected in the image are narrowed, allowing you to target the tones that you want.
In short, sliding the tab on the left towards the right prevents the filter from affecting the shadows. Sliding the tab on the right towards the left prevents the filter from affecting the highlights. The further you drag, the stronger the restriction.
To stop the Graduated Filter from affecting the darker parts of the sky, the reeds, and the model’s head, I dragged the left tab towards the right 73/100.
If you need to check what’s being affected, click “Show Luminance Mask.” This switches the view to black and white and shows the mask in red in order to help you identify how the filter is working.

Luckily, the solution to the green pool problem is not that hard to solve and with proper maintenance and pool attention, you will be enjoying a crystal clear algea-free pool once again. Simply follow the steps outlined below and eliminate the green and bring in the blue!
- 1. Shock the pool with chlorine every day until all the green is gone .
- 2. Run the filter 24 hours a day and backwash every day until the green and then cloudiness is gone .
- 3. Vacuum when you feel like it.
- 4. Adjust pH and alkalinity when algae are gone and chlorine levels have fallen to a safe range for swimming.
If a pool is green, or has green spots on the liner or concrete, you have LIVE ALGAE. Most water testing cannot detect algae, so although your water tests may come out OK, if you have green, you have LIVE ALGAE. It usually feels slimy to the touch. Although vacuuming seems to clear it up easily, it grows back rapidly.
Many things cause green pool water, even if youve maintained perfect water conditions. Rain can bring in spores, algae and dirt beyond what the current chlorine level can handle. Algae thrive in warmer water so if were having an unusually warm summer, algae will grow more quickly, and regular chlorine levels should be maintained a little higher than normal.

Some large DE filters do not need to be backwashed.
Water Turns Light Blue
According to Dr. Paul Coxon, in a CNN.com article titled Why are swimming pools usually blue, the molecules of water absorb red light and reflect blue light. You notice the blue effect when you have a large volume of water because of the way molecules are slightly absorbing light from the red end of the spectrum, Coxon says. The deeper the water, the more blue it appears. He also points out that the same thing happens under artificial light.

Help Your Pool Filter
Sometimes cloudy pool water can be the result of your inground swimming pool filter being unable to scoop up large clumps of particles that have sunk to the bottom of the pool.
So if you believe your filters limitations could be the cause of your pools murkiness, then there are several ways you can make the cleaning process less strenuous on your filter.
These include:
- Disturbing The Water
Using your swimming pool on a regular basis will often be enough to disturb the water, which will allow the particles to rise to the surface.
However, if this doesnt work, then you can use a brush to remove the debris, which will make it easier for your filter to clean the pool.
- Use The Vacuum
If your swimming pool has difficulty draining the water, then you can use a vacuum cleaner as a means to make the sunken particles rise to the surface.
Just place the vacuum upside on the bottom of the pool and the unwanted debris will soon be swept away by your filter.
- Maintain The Filter
When using a pool filter, it is important to make sure that the product is properly cleaned and maintained. To do this, you should clean your filter at least twice during pool seasons and consider using a premium pool cleaner.
However, if your filter still appears gross or clogged, then you may need to consider a complete replacement.
Skim Pool Surface Regularly
In addition to installing a proper filtration system, it is also important to regularly check your filter to make sure it is not full of debris that may cause improper flow. Make sure that you skim the surface of the pool regularly to prevent debris from going into the filter. An Invasion By Sanitizer Snatchers
Leaves and natural debris are at some point going to find their way into your pool. Whenever this happens, the sanitizer in the pool gets to work in an attempt to eliminate the debris. However, the purpose of your sanitizer isnt to eliminate large, solid debristhis is why the pool has the filtration system. When the system is unable to eliminate them, they begin to slowly eat up the sanitizer.
As you swim, you also get to introduce various solids into the pool water. Urine, sweat, beauty products, and sunscreen are all known to exhaust the chlorine present. This is the sole reason you need to incorporate sanitizer into the pool, and its also why you will need to regularly top it up.
When the chlorine is hogged by these contaminants, you are left with no other option but to continue adding sanitizer. With time, it becomes impossible for the chlorine to function. This means the chemicals cant efficiently eliminate hazardous bacteria, e.g., E. coli, as they will be busy trying to attack the solid debris leading to the formation of cloudy pool water.
Bad Use Of Disinfectants In The Swimming Pool
The inefficient use of disinfectants in swimming pools is usually the main reason the pool water becomes milky and cloudy.
A lack always occurs when too little or too much of a certain pool cleaner is used in the pool.
- In relation to the pool volume, too little chlorine, bromine, active oxygen, or similar is used in the pool, and the organic content in the water increases.
- The chlorine dosage is far above the recommended limit of 1.5 ppm.
- The chlorine is used but quickly loses its effect as no cyanuric acid is used in the pool as a chlorine stabilizer.
But the wrong combination of different chemicals can also lead to white water in the pool.
- Chlorine is combined with active oxygen, which cancels each other out.
- Biguanides cannot be used in combination with chlorine either.
- A phosphate remover is used, which negates the effect of the metal remover.
With a regular water balance test, these problems can be found quickly and resolved in a targeted manner.
That is why water test strips belong in every pool equipment.

Why Is My Pool Cloudy When The Chemicals Are Balanced
When all the pool chemicals are fine but your water is still cloudy, there is a good chance that you have particles in your pool. In this case, a water clarifier is used to collect all the fine particles so that they can be picked up by the filter.
Alternatively, you can use pool floc , also known as a super floc, which is a chemical that is used to bring all the clouding particles to the bottom of your pool forming a large cloud that you can then vacuum up using a manual pump. The particles collected using a pool floc will not pass through the filter like they would if a water clarifier were used. Make sure that your filter is set on the backwash or waste option when you are vacuuming to avoid any damage that may happen to the filter as a result of clogging.
