Testing Your Sand Bottom

Start Up Instructions for your New Above Ground Pool

The weight of the water in the pool will help to compact the sand bottom underneath the liner. Generally it takes 5-10 days for the sand to be fully compacted and become hardened.

The first time you get in the pool to swim, gently feel the bottom of the pool to ensure the sand is sufficiently compacted. If the bottom is still soft, give it a few more days before walking around on the bottom.

If you have a heater or chlorinator, connect it between the filter and return. If you dont have either just simply connect the filter to the return.

Next connect your grounding wire to the pump. The grounding wire is a small metal wire that wraps around your pool and keeps you safe while swimming.

On the other hand, if you wait too long your pool cover traps heat, algae will start growing in your pool, and it will be more expensive to clear up the water. A good rule of thumb to open a pool in the Spring is when temperatures are consistently above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additional Things You Might Need

Here is a list of some of the equipment you might need to open the pool for the first time:

  • A pool cover pump
  • A friend to help you out
  • Chemical testing kit

Now that you have an idea of the chemicals you will need, lets take a look at the steps you need to take to open your above ground pool.

Step 1 Clear off the water, debris and anything else from the pool cover

First off, use a pool cover pump to remove water that might have accumulated on the pool cover surface. You can even use a regular sump pump, which you must have at home. Once all the moisture has been removed, use a soft broom or a skimmer to clear out debris from the pool cover surface.

Step 2 Remove the pool cover

Once the pool cover has cleared and dried out completely, it is time to remove the pool cover. You need to be very careful while removing the pool cover. Make sure that you do not let any of the debris or accumulated water enter the pool.

With the pool cover removed, get the help of a friend and wash the pool cover using a pool cover cleaner. Cleaning the pool cover will save you from a lot of trouble when you need to put the cover back on. It also helps extend the lifespan of the pool cover.

Store the pool cover in a safe place to protect it from damage caused by critters. Use an airtight container to give it the best protection.

Step 3 Pull the winter plugs and accessories out

Step 4 Top up the water in your pool

Step 5 Reinstall the pool ladder

Hook Things Up And Turn It On

Get connected! Its time to hook up all of the connections before we fire-up this bad boy.

The skimmer attaches to the pool pump, the pump connects to the filter, and the filter connects to any add-ons you might have . If you dont have any of those, just hook it up to the return.

Now, its finally time to flip your circuit breaker and turn the pump back on. Make sure the pump is primed so water is flowing through it. With a multiport filter, you can now switch it to the filter setting.

If you need to prime your pump, just turn everything back off, remove the pump cover, and add some water from the hose. Then, seal everything back up and turn it on again. This should get things flowing.

Watch your equipment for a few minutes to make sure everything is working properly and there are no leaks or drips anywhere.

At this point, its a good idea to resurrect your pool filter with a nice backwash. Depending on what type of filter you use, we recommend following the manufacturers instructions for backwashing or cleaning your filter so nothing goes awry.

Next, its time to clean things up.

Intex Pool Water Balance

Lets start with the basics. Pool water balance refers to the levels of pH, Total Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness. Balanced water is less likely to become cloudy or green. This important part of water maintenance also protects your vinyl Intex pool, and is more comfortable for swimmers. Before getting started, test the water with an at-home test kit or test strips .

pH

Remember that pH is the key to a healthy pool. When pH rises above 7.8, your chlorine becomes less effective, and the potential for stains and scale formation increases. Likewise, a pH under 7.2 is considered acidic, and may cause skin and eye irritation as well as corrode pool equipment. Unbalanced pH is hard on vinyl Intex pools, and this damage is not covered under warranty. Use pH Reducer to lower pH levels or pH Increaser to raise levels into the ideal range of 7.4-7.6.

Total Alkalinity

Total Alkalinity affects pH and is best in the range of 80-120 ppm . When TA is too low, pH becomes erratic and unstable, and when too high, the pH is difficult to adjust. When your TA is not in range, adjust this first before addressing pH. Use pH Reducer if TA is over 120 ppm. If TA is under 80 ppm, the product you use depends on pH levels. When both TA and pH are very low , make sure your pool water is free of metals, then add pH Increaser. If only TA is low, use Alkalinity Increaser to bring the levels up.

Calcium Hardness

Add Salt To Your Pool

Every salt chlorinator has a suggested range for salt so check your manual to make sure you the best dose for your pool. We’ll be using the average salt level required which of 3200 ppm.

Make sure you are using the proper kind of salt for your pool, i.e. Sodium Chloride Salt that is at the very least 99% pure. We strongly recommend using AquaSaltwhich is 99.9% pure especially if you need to add a lot salt like for a new pool or converting to salt. While that 0.1% may not seem like much of a difference, when you have to add several bags of it to the pool it adds up.

Use the below chart to see how many lbs of salt needs to be added to your pool based on the current salt ppm and the gallons of water in your pool. Salt is typically available in 40lbs bags.

To add the salt, pour a few bags directly into your pool at a time. Then use your pool brush to move the water around and help kick up any salt sitting on the bottom to help disolve the mixture. Once you start getting close to the final number of bags recommended, go ahead and test your water’s salt levels. You can always add more but the only to remove salt is to add more water. If your salt levels are too hight this could result in needing to drain your pool several inches before filling it up again with fresh water. Start low and build your salt level.
