What To Do If Your Swimming Pool Is Leaking

Why Is My Pool Losing Water?

Not all leaks can be found using the above techniques. If you have found a leak or believe your pool is leaking, it may be time to call in the experts. We repair leaks in equipment and pipework above the ground. If your leak is not in this area, we can advise you who to contact for repair work in the Christchurch area.

How Much Water Should My Pool Be Losing Due To Natural Circumstances

How quickly the water in your pool evaporates is dependent upon several factors, as mentioned above, if the sun is high and the heat is strong, then your pool will lose water more quickly. Other factors can affect your pools water level such as wind, the level of activity in the pool, and how often you use the pools heater. To help retain your pools water levels you can consider using a pool cover. Without one, evaporation will cause your pool to lose about 1/4th inch of water each day or 2 inches a week.

Help My Pool Water Level Is Dropping

There are three reasons why your pool water level is dropping:

  • Leaks
  • Evaporation
  • Excessive splashing

A leak is the main cause of a lower water level in your pool and/or spa tub. Water loss due to evaporation will naturally occur, but only accounts for about a quarter inch a day. Although splashing can be avoided, leaks must be repaired.

How To Repair A Leaking Pool

There are different methods of repairing pool leaks. Before you start the process, the first thing will be to locate where the water is coming out. In case the water is coming out from any of the pool equipment, you may need a specialist to fix it.

If the leak is a result of the installed fixtures, you should ensure that they are very tight. You may also need to replace the broken ones. When the leak is coming from the vinyl liner, you will have to replace the liner or use patches. Some people may prefer to use sealers, but they are not very effective.

Follow the following steps:

  • Drain the pool entirely or to the extent where you can see the hole or tear.
  • Use dry or wet sandpaper. Rub the area where you will apply the patch. Remember to clean the area also.
  • Measure the hole and then cut a patch that is at least one inch larger than the hole. It can even be two times more than the diameter.
  • Place an adhesive around the area where you want to put the patch. To prevent air bubbles, you should rub a flat object on the patch towards the edges. Do this until it is completely flat or after all the bubbles have been removed.
  • Wait for it to settle and keep checking after every 30 minutes to ensure that the patch has stuck properly.
  • Leave your pool for about 24 hours to allow the patch to adhere completely to the liner.

Common Signs Of A Leaking Pool

Why is My Pool Losing Water?

Water loss is the most obvious sign of a leaking pool, but are you able to recognize the other common symptoms? Watching out for these signs at your customers pools can help them get ahead of further damage and puts you in the position to he the hero that can solve the problem!

1. Water Level Changes

Dropping water level is the clearest sign a pool is leaking, but its important to determine if the water loss is due to evaporation or a leak. Evaporation rates vary depending on wind, air and water temperature, humidity, and other factors. Use our Evaporation Calculator to see the evaporation rate in your area based current weather data. Water loss in excess of that amount indicates that the pool is leaking.

2. Cracks or Falling Tile

Because the surrounding ground is becoming unsettled by the presence of excess water, cracks and tile movement are more likely to occur when a pool is leaking. Cracks or gaps in the bond beam may occur as the pool settles farther into the softened ground.

3. Wet Spots in Yard

Soft, mushy spots or uneven grass growth around the pool area may indicate a plumbing leak. Erosion due to water movement underground can cause landscaping to shift and sink.

4. High Water Bills

Automatic fill devices can hide leaks by keeping the pool filled. If you notice the autofill running constantly or increased water bills its time to start investigating for a leak.

5. Water Under Equipment

My Pool Loses Water Every Day Is This Normal

Did you step out onto your deck this morning and notice that your pools water level was low? Or while napping in your lounge chair, did you hear gurgling from the skimmer? Youre not alone. It happens to many pool owners. But the question is: Is your pool losing water every day from normal evaporation? Or is it a pool leak? Evaporation can vary based on sun, wind, humidity, surface area, and the difference between water temperature and air temperature. A pool in a windy, dry climate like El Paso will typically evaporate faster than a pool in Dallas. And if your pool is heated during the winter, youll lose more water because of evaporation.

Is The Pool Leaking Only With The Equipment On

This may indicate a pressure-side return leak. With the filter pump on, the plumbing on the pressure side is under pressure. This can open up small drips into spraying gushers. Check the waste or backwash line for water consistently running. One inch of your pool water can equal 500 gallons. Check downhill from a pool, looking for weepers where underground leakage is surfacing. Check for soft or wet spots in the yard, on the side of the pool where the plumbing returns water to the pool.

Why Am I Losing Water In My Inground Pool

Normally pools see ¼½ inch loss of water per day due to evaporation. This is roughly 2 4 inches per week. For a normal sized pool you will loose 25,000 to 50,000 gallons of water per year due to evaporation.

Also Know, how much does it cost to fix a pool leak? The cost of a pool leak in a fiberglass shell can run about $300 for a spider crack that spreads. Fixing a crack in the plaster coating of a gunite pool can start at $65 for a small leak. This is about the same cost for a spa leak. Resurfacing a gunite pool can cost over $1,000.

Similarly, it is asked, how much does pool leak detection cost?

Alternatively, a regular leak detection service can cost between $300 and $400, depending on the company. Plumbing and Pipe Leaks can only be detected by a pressure test on each line or a meter test, and obviously the line which does not hold pressure is causing the leak.

Why is my pool losing water when the pump is on?

When the filter pump runs, the plumbing on the pressure side is under pressure. This can turn what would start as small drips into significant amount of spray that can make your pool lose water rapidly. If the pool is leaking without your equipment running, you could have a suction-side leak.

Is It Normal For A Pool To Lose An Inch Of Water A Day

On average, your pool can lose about a quarter of an inch of water in a day. However, this depends on the weather variations as sunlight can play a huge role in the evaporation of water, leading up to even ½ inch of loss in the water a day. This is still pretty normal but if your pool loses more than that every day then there are reasons to be concerned.

Naturally, pools will lose water over time. In a dry environment, your pool is likely to lose about ½ an inch of water per day. However, if it loses more than that like 1 inch each day then it is an indication that there is a leak in your pool.

This is a concern and at this point, as no matter how many times you refill the pool it will not work as the level of water may keep dropping due to the leak.

Plugging Pool Returns & Skimmer

We recommend isolating your pluming system from the structure of your pool and then plugging all the suction and return ports. This includes the main drain if you are able to get to it. If you plug all ports in your pool and the pool continues to lose water then this is a confirmed symptom of a leak in the pool structure somewhere.

How Much Water Should Your Pool Lose

A residential pool without a pool cover will lose about 1/4 inch of water level per day or about 2 inches per week solely due to evaporation. This can amount to between 10,000 and 20,000 gallons of water loss per year, depending on the size of the pool and the factors that increase or decrease evaporation.

How To Detect Pool Liner Leakage Point Dye Test

Why Is My Pool Losing Water? It May Not Be What You Fear

Determining the exact point of your liner where there is a leakage can be a challenging task. You do not even need to empty your pool when determining the leakage point. Again, it becomes even more complicated when there is no water in the pool because you wont also see where the water is coming out. However, you can do a dye test that involves the use of different colors to determine the actual leakage spot. Follow the following steps:

  • Switch off the pool pump, skimmers, or any other equipment that may cause the eater to move around. The water should be still when conducting this test.
  • Use a syringe that has a dye and then release some of the dye into your pool where you think there might be leakage. Dont disturb the water because this will make the dye to float.
  • Check the direction in which the dye is moving. In case the dye is stationary, it means that you may have targeted the wrong area. The dye should flow in the direction where the water is coming out. This process requires a lot of patience, and you may need to conduct the test several times.

Is Your Pool Losing Water

You come home and look outside only to notice that your water level seems off. Youre not sure if it has a leak since it can be tough with the sheer size of the pool but want to make sure. Here are a few pool contractor tips to help you determine whether it is water loss or a leak.

Since not all water loss is a leak, we need to eliminate the obvious culprits:

Splash out:Splash out naturally occurs when swimmers are entering and leaving the pool. It can also be caused by water features such as spillways or waterfalls. It may seem negligible but it can add up over the course of a day with several swimmers.

Wind: Surprising right? Depending on your landscaping and location, this can become a huge problem for pools that do not have automatic covers. Windy conditions change the surface area of the pool water and increase heat loss as well as evaporation.

Relative Humidity: When the air is humid, the ability for air to take on more water is decreased since it is already saturated. Low humidity coupled with high temperatures/sun exposure can lead to excessive evaporation.

Backwash: If you have a filtration system that uses a backwash feature, this can increase the rate that you have to fill your pool. The multi-port valve could be leaking water out of the backwash line, so be sure to check this first.

BUCKET TEST

The bucket test is an excellent tool to determine if water loss is due to evaporation or an actual leak.

Why Is My Pool Losing Water

No matter which season you are in, your pool can lose inches of water a week. Natural causes such as wind, heat and humidity can contribute to pool water loss. This is a big deal, because if your water level gets too low it may cause your pool pump to suck air and run dry, which can damage it.

How the Seasons Affect your Pool Water Level

In winter, your pool water is affected by the humidity in the air and the ambient temperature of the air. When humidity is low in the winter, the air and water try to balance out the differences. This means that even when the weather is cold, moisture is drawn out of your pool into the less humid air. Low humidity equals high evaporation that takes water out of your pool.

Low rainfall also means that the water that is lost is not replaced. High wind can also affect the amount of water your pool loses by drawing moisture from the top of the pool out at a higher rate. Having fences, bushes or shrubs around the deck can help with water loss due to the wind.

Your pool also loses water in summer, up to 2 inches per week, due to the heat of the air. You can employ a swimming pool cover to protect the pool from these powerful rays. A pool cover will also keep heat in your pool when the weather is cold. In summer, the air around the pool is hotter than the pool water. To balance this discrepancy, water is drawn out of the pool or evaporates.

Pool Loses Water All Day

Pool leaks can be difficult to diagnose as weather patterns change. Afternoon thunderstorms may alter your pools water level. Pool chemicals like chlorine often evaporate rapidly. You can add stabilizers to your pool water to keep the chemicals in your pool and out of the air. A good rule of thumb is that if your pool loses more than ¼ in a humid environment and ½ in a dry environment, you might have a pool leak. You should perform the test at the end of this post to see if your pool is leaking.

Fixing Water Loss By Leak

Does my pool have a leak, or is it just evaporation?

The most common places your pool can have a leak are the fittings, plumbing, drains, and the skimmer. It is easy to fix a leak in the fittings. You can simply put silicone around the leak. This will stop your pool from losing water. Similarly, a leak in the skimmer can also be stopped by patching a silicone around it, although this is temporary. It will eventually need a replacement.

On the contrary, it is much more complicated to fix a leak in the pools drainage system. In such cases, you will need to replace the entire system to prevent the leak. To fix a leak in the plumbing, it is best to call for professional help as it can be sourced from extreme water pressure and cant be fixed manually.

The Pump System Can Leak

The pump system that circulates the water should be on for eight hours every day to keep the pool and spa tub in working condition. The water will pass through a chlorinator in some pool filter systems. Water on the pump room floor is an indication of a leak if the pool loses water in the winter while the motor is on.

Florida may have cold weather during part of the winter, but the temperatures warm up quickly when the days get longer in the spring. This is the attraction of the Sunshine State. Your outdoor pool wont go for long without use, so donât ignore it during the colder months.

Making Too Much Of A Splash

Jackknife, cannonball, or maybe a good ole belly flop. Whatever the move, pool-goers love to splash around the water. Get a group of energetic kids in a pool, and youll find yourself ducking for cover from splashing water. But did you know that your pool loses a significant amount of water from excess splashing? Known as splash out, this phenomenon tends to be the main culprit for lower water levels. To determine whether or not this is the case, make note of the waters level and then close the pool for a bit. Once some time passes, check the water level to root out any alarming differences. If you notice a significant drop in water levels, you might want to tell your guests to keep the splashing in the pool.
