How To Maintain An Above

DIY Above Ground Pool Liner Installation in 25 Minutes

The best way to maintain your above-ground pools liner is by keeping the water healthy and being careful not to rip it when moving things around. Unfortunately, some elements will wear down your liner over time, no matter what you do. With these, you just have to keep an eye out and notice the damage before its too late. Replacing a liner before it breaks is less of a headache. Elements that damage pool liners over time are sun exposure, too much chlorine, lawn mower projectiles, wind, rain, and, of course, time. Maybe make it a bi-weekly chore to inspect your pools liner during the summer to ensure you catch any damage before its too late. Finding a small leak when its still small will make it easier to fix, rather than waiting to find out about the leak when waters spraying all over your yard.

Although pools are a blast, they can be hard to maintain. So here, weve given you the tools you need to notice when your liner needs to be replaced and how to go about replacing it. Remember to ask a friend for help and be careful with mowing the grass around the pool or moving heavy furniture with sharp corners.

Using a utility knife, cut the liner a few inches below the top rail. Cut the liner into smaller pieces, so its easier to remove and discard.

If you stick with respected pool brands and pay careful attention to size and fit, the difference is unlikely to affect your pool liners lifespan. But for a more accurate idea of an above ground pool liners strength, youre better off looking for the mil measurement.

How To Install An Overlap Liner For Your Above Ground Pool

Overlap Liners are the most economical choice in above ground liner. just as the name suggests the liner literally overlaps/drapes over the side of your pool wall and is then secured by the pool’s top rails. This is the kind of liner you’ll end up with with you’re looking to install an above ground pool with a deep end.

This guide is meant to provide additional resources gathered over the years from Royal Swimming Pools installation team. It does not replace your manufacturers liner installation instructions. Refer to them first.

IMPORTANT! Before opening your liner box, check the label to confirm that the liner is the proper size and pattern. If it is incorrect, DO NOT open the box. Contact your supplier immediately.

There are several steps that are the same regardless of the size or shape liner you have. Before installing your liner, the pool needs to be built to where only the small stabilizer rails and top plates are installed. Having the top plates loosely installed with a single screw will make adjusting the liner quicker. The wide top rails are not needed yet. All uprights should be installed, and you should double check the roundness of the pool by taking cross measurements in several places.

PRO TIP: Give yourself plenty of time. This can be done in as little as an hour, or weve seen it take as long as 4 hours depending on the liners fit and how much help you have.

Leaking Swimming Pool Liner

Finding and fixing a pool liner leak could cost upwards of $2,500, and your best efforts may not fix it permanently. One way to know if you have a leak is if there is a drastic change in your water level. The best advice is to call a professional who can pinpoint exactly where the leak is occurring. If the leak is small enough, then a patch should fix it. If it is too big for a patch kit, then call a professional immediately. If you wait too long, then the leak could lead to a complete liner replacement.

Your Backyard Can Tell You Which Shape Is Best

Not every yard is made to order like the examples above. But your yard layout will give you the best clue as to which shape works best. When choosing a size consider the swim size of a pool is not the final space needed for the pool. The sizes you see advertised are the inside swimming dimensions of the pool. The actual size needed will be based on which model or manufacturer layout you look at.

When we excavate for a new pool we always make a larger cut to accommodate the pool. We adjust this space needed more when an oval pool has buttresses instead of non Buttress frame. A Buttress pool will need a larger excavated space compared to a Buttress Free pool.

  • Place the closed liner carton in the center of the pool
  • Open the carton. To avoid damaging the liner, DO NOT use a knife or anything sharp to open the carton.
  • Unpack and unfold the liner and spread it out in the sun to warm up.
  • Inspect all seams for tears and surfaces for holes.
  • Spread out liner. The curved seam should be centered on the cove at the base wall. The other seams will form straight lines across the bottom of the pool. If seams appear to have aps, check to see if correct side is up.
  • Smooth out all wrinkles in the bottom. Smooth out the floor of the liner by pushing it toward the pool wall. A soft broom will be helpful. Never forcefully pull or drag the liner.
  • If you have a beaded liner, refer to the BEADED LINER INSTALLATION section.
  • Lift the sides of the liner and drape over the top of the pool wall.
  • Refer to OPTIONAL STEP TO ELIMINATE WRINKLES section or continue with STEP 11.
  • Start lling the pool with water. As the pool lls, work out wrinkles and smooth liner to the walls. Remove the plastic coping around the top edge of the wall one piece at a time and adjust the liner. Keep smoothing out the wrinkles.
  • Do not install face plates, inlets, light fixtures, etc. until water reaches 3 below each opening. Premature installation might result in the liner tearing away from the opening due to stretching as the water level increases!
  • Proceed filing pool until water reaches desired level.
  • DO NOT STRETCH YOUR LINER! THIS WILL AUTOMATICALLY VOID THE WARRANTY.

    What Is A Pool Liner

A pool liner can be made out of materials other than vinyl, such as fiberglass, but those are usually constructed for inground commercial pools that get a lot of heavy use.

Most pools, especially above ground pools, have vinyl liners.

And the pool liner is there to retain the water in the pool and look nice at the same time.

    Thats really it.

They also provide a waterproof barrier between roughly constructed pool materials and the water.

Imagine an above ground pool constructed with metal rods and panels. Not only is it not a smooth surface on the inside, its also not watertight.

Whats Under The Above Ground Pool Liner

Whoa, there! Before you just throw a new liner in the pool and call it good, make sure you also get a hiqh-quality liner pad. Its a protective layer that goes between the ground and the pool liner. It helps prevent punctures and lumps youd get if the liner were just sitting on bare ground.

Liner pads are made from two materials.

Above Ground Pool Liners: Hard Side Or Soft Side

First things first. Soft-sided pools, such as Intex pools, are made of a single piece of material that serves as both liner and pool walls. Thats not what were talking about here.

Hard-sided above ground pools use liners. They offer some support to the liner, so the vinyl doesnt need to be quite as heavy duty as it is for a soft-sided pool. Unfortunately, the reduced durability can make the vinyl more vulnerable to damage, which eventually leads to the need to replace the liner.
