Things To Know About Sinking An Above Ground Pool Partially In The Ground
1. It could potentially cave-in years later when its time to change the liner
This is by far the biggest concern in burying an above ground pool. When an AG pool is in the ground and full of water, then nothing can really happen to it. The water in the pool creates an outward pressure that disallows the surrounding earth to misshape or cave it in.
The danger of a cave-in is only when the pool is empty. At that point, the surrounding earth can push or fall against the pools wall and cause it to cave inward. This can result in a range from a simple denting in a small area of the wall that can be easily fixed, all the way to the pools wall caving in all the way around and completely destroying it.
The good news here is that you should only drain an above ground swimming pool when its time to change the liner. And thats because liners will immediately begin to shrink when the pool doesnt have water in it. If the pool stays empty for more than an hour or so, the liner could shrink enough to pull down off the wall when you re-fill. This would result in needing a new liner.
The further down in the ground you go, the more likely to have a cave-in issue at liner change time. I recommend burying an above ground pool only half-way or less. This will lessen your chances of having an issue later.

Periodically Check The Water Condition & Level
I would advise you if you have an above ground swimming pool that has been closed for the season to also check the water condition in your pool once a month during the non-swimming season. This can be done even if you have placed a cover tightly over the pool for the cooler months.
Just peel back a very small section of cover and peek under it to see if your water is still clear. If its getting too green, you can still add some chemicals to help it keep stay clear. This will help you avoid having a time-consuming mess to clean up when opening your pool in the spring.
This does not mean that you can throw chlorine tablets or chlorine shock in your pool. If they do not quickly dissolve, they will sit on your pool liner and ruin it.

Use them as water starts to accumulate on your cover to keep it drained. One word of caution, never completely drain your above ground swimming pool cover. Thats because if you leave a few inches of water on top of it, this will keep the wind from getting under the cover and possibly tearing it as it moves around.

Ii The Hole Has To Be Bigger Than The Size Of The Pool
Above ground pools are assembled on site. They cant be pre-built somewhere cool and then helicoptered in and set down into a hole perfectly. The thing has to be built in the hole so more room is needed. As a guideline, if the pool is going two or more feet down, make the hole 1.5 bigger than the size of the pool all the way around. EXAMPLE: A 24 round pool should have a hole that is at least 27 in diameter.
Make sure the bottom of the hole is the desired size and not the top. I know that sounds stupid, but its not. A lot of times, holes get dug with a starting top dimension of 27 round and by the time the hole is two feet down, its dimension has tilted in and it ends up being a 26 hole at the bottom. Additionally, if your earth is really sandy and loose, it may be a good idea to make the hole even bigger. Theres little more frustrating than building one of these pools in a hole and it caves in on you halfway through with loose earth.
Do You Have To Have A Fence Around Your Yard If You Have A Pool
If you have an inground pool, you will need to install a fence around the pool and not necessarily your whole yard. Above-ground pools dont typically require a fence unless the pool is really deep.
Therefore, if you are planning on putting a pool in your front yard, you will also have to consider putting in a fence.
This is because most places do not allow above-ground pools in front yards, so you will definitely have to put in an inground pool.
