Lets talk about DIY Solar Pool Heater Black Hose. Its that time of year again. The weather is warming up and the kids are ready to jump in the pool but its still cold! Here Im going to tell you about my experience building a DIY Solar Pool Heater Black Hose.
First things first, gather all the materials for your DIY Solar Pool Heater Black Hose. First, material is a 4×8 sheet of treated plywood for use outdoors. You want to pick this up from a local hardware store, the rest of the supplies can be purchased online for convenience. You will also need black hose, we chose Rain Bird irrigation hose at 500 feet length. A pack of 150 zip ties. We drilled through the board and used zip ties to hold the hose to the board, you can see how we did it in the time lapse video below.
Drilling The Hose Exits
A 4 x 4 box of this type will typically take around 220 feet of ½ inch tube. The exit holes can be drilled once the box is almost filled . Again, use Fig 1 to calculate the approximate position of the holes.
Zip tie the inner end of the tube across the roll as indicated. Then turn the roll over so it is at the bottom of the registration. This will make bracing the roll more accessible. The outer end of the roll can then be gently bent to lie parallel to the inner end. Measure off around 6 inches beyond the box on both hose ends and cut the excess off.

Keeping The Water Warm
Up until this point, weve been talking about getting cold water out of the pool, heating it up, and then adding it back in to increase the pool temperature. All of these methods work very well for this purpose, but they arent doing much to help retain that heat at night or during periods when you arent using the pool. We were really excited about the pool in our backyard when we bought the house.
We soon realized that we could only use it for about 3 to 3-½ months of the year.
It was especially frustrating in spring and fall when the daytime temperatures were 90-100F but the water temperature was around 65F!
So we decided to look into options for heating the pool.
After looking at all the solar pool heaters available, we decided to make our own because

- We want to be able to increase the number of weeks/months we can use the pool.
- We are NOT trying to heat the pool to be able to use it in the middle of winter.
- We want to be able to store the pool heater away easily when not needed like in the winter or middle of summer.
We researched many designs and tried a few and came up with a system that works.

How To Make Diy Solar Pool Heaters
Place the hula hoop inside the garden bag
Gather the excess bag around the outside of the hula hoop
Using the duct tape, tape the excess bag around the hula hoop
Cut your pool noodle in half, then in half again.
Cut along the side of the noodle pieces into the middle giving a slit for the noodle to fit around the hula hoop.
Make as many solar panels as you can and get those babies into your pool. You will see the pool temperature go up and it will be like your secrete heating system and water temperature throughout the pool.
How Well Do Diy Solar Heaters Work
In short, as well, if not better than many off-the-shelf systems. DIY solar pool heaters rely on precisely the same principles as most commercial systems. Diy Solar Pool Heating With Corrugated Metal Roofing
This is a unique idea for a homemade pool heater. The heat absorbers in this process are a few sheets of fluted metal roofing. A pump is used to direct the water from the pool to the header at the top of what is known as the collector. The water runs through the heated tubes and at the base of the collector, it is then channeled back into the pool.
For a total collection area of 4.33ft x 16 ft, the project comes is just under $300 quite inexpensive compared to some projects and prefabricated options that are over $1000.
Calculating The Angle And Running The Supply Pipe
I mounted it at a 45° angle, which may seem strange but hereâs my reasoning: According to this cool sun angle calculator, that is approximately the optimum angle for me during early April and late September between 10:00AM and 11:00AM, which is when I need the heating most – during the middle of summer the water sometimes gets too warm, so maybe Iâll be able to run the system at night and radiate some excess heat.For the supply side, I tied into the pipe going from the filter to the jet, and used 3/4â³ PVC which I buried in a shallow trench :

Laying Out The Pipe Coil
This is the most tricky part of the build. In most cases, the coil memory built into the roll of the hose will assist. But it still takes some gymnastics to get a closely spaced coil laid out in the box. You can use fig 1 as a reference for what the result should look like.
Note: Leave around 4 feet of slack on the inner and outer ends of the roll.
You can zip tie successive coils together as you progress. This also makes it easier to get the final brace member installed when you’re done.

Start by removing the glass from the sliding door. Then measure it and cut the 2×4 lumber accordingly using a table saw.
