Alternatives To Chlorine Tablets

  • Most similar to the chlorine tablets, powder chlorines supply has also been impacted by the shortage as people buy it in higher quantities than they did before.
  • Liquid chlorine, which is a stronger version of standard household bleach, can be dumped into the pool directly. It must be used more frequently than chlorine tablets, however, and experts recommend using it in tandem with cyanuric acid as a stabilizer.
  • Saltwater systems are another method of keeping a pool a safe swimming environment. Although more expensive at the get-go. Saltwater generators work by converting the chloride in salt into chlorine through electrolysis.

Ultimately, the increase in demand and lack of supply hit the swimming pool industry hard, but experts say there are still plenty of swimming pool disinfectants to go around.

Where Does Everyone Buy Their Pool Chemicals

Edit – Awesome answers! Thank you!

What exactly are you asking?

There are many pool professionals here who buy from distribution .

And cheap isn’t always best, so you kind of have to be picky.

Sorry..buying retail for home user like Amazon vs local pool shop vs Walmart.

I buy most of my chemicals at Ocean State Job Lot. They have 1 pound bags of shock for $2.99 and gallon liquid shock for the same price.

The only time I buy at a pool store is if I run out mid-season or I need a bag of DE. I haven’t found anywhere else that sells DE locally.

My suggestion is to read through trouble free pool forums and use that method for maintaining the pool. You’ll mostly just buy bleach and boric acid from grocery stores/ Costco, muriatic acid, sand and DE from hardware stores, and anything special such as CYA or algicide from amazon. Works wonderfully and is very cheap.

Last time I was in a pool store for epoxy mortar, I watched someone get screwed out of $250 for a bunch of bogus additives by a so called expert.

Does Walmart Sell Pool Shock

Regarding this, does Lowes sell pool shock?

Beside above, is liquid chlorine better than powder shock? There are a few key differences between liquid chlorine and powdered shock. Liquid chlorine is generally less costly than granular shock and comes in refillable containers, where granular shock does not. Liquid chlorine does not need to dissolve in your water as it is already in liquid form.

Similarly one may ask, how much does it cost to shock a pool?

Your pool specialist will likely shock your pool to kill any algae or bacteria that grew over the winter. You may need to purchase some additional chemicals to help balance out the chemicals after the initial shock. This costs between $20 and $30 on average.

Got Salt Ideas Where To Get Pure Salt For Your Swimming Pool

Chlorine generators require salt water to produce chlorine, which means the pool operators require salt in order to create salt water. Not just any salt will do, though. Salt for use in salt water pools must be 99%+ pure, without additives like the anti-caking agent yellow prusiate of soda or iodine, which can cause staining. Depending on your own pool and time requirements, you may also need to look for a finely ground salt that dissolves rapidly.

In the last few years it has become easier to locate and purchase pool salt. Many pool supply companies carry salt that is appropriate for use with chlorine generators, and with the popularity of residential salt pools, sometimes even the big box stores carry it. Even so, sometimes our clients have to get more creative for sourcing salt that is appropriate for pool use. Here are a few places to look if youre in need.

Be wary of salt sold for animal feed and never use rock salt, as those varieties often contains impurities that make it unsuitable for pool use and that could damage the chlorine generator or leave debris on the pool floor. Also take into consideration your time needs. Some of these forms of salt are sold in pellets, some are course ground, and some are ground quite fine. All are fine, as long as the proper care is taken when introducing the salt into the water. For more info on that topic, take a look at Adding Salt to a Pool: How, Where, and When.

Chlorine Shelf Life: How Long Can I Store Pool Chemicals

Welcome back students of pool todays lecture is on chlorine shelf life, and more specifically, do pool chemicals expire, or do they lose efficacy over time?

In an ideal world, the pool season would end just as you use-up the last chlorine tablet, pour-in your last bags of pool shock, and perfectly adjust your water balance with the last scoops from the bucket.

However, one look inside of any pool owners chemical closet will tell you that leftover pool chemicals are the norm. So then, do pool chemicals go bad, and will they still work next season?

Costs To Keep Your Pool Clean Keep Rising With No Relief In Sight

MAKE $700 THIS WEEK SHOPPING AT LOWEâS (Easy Retail Arbitrage)

As hot summer temperatures approach, the price of relief plunging into that cool, blue swimming pool in your backyard continues to increase.

Pool owners who depend on trichlor tablets, one of the most convenient ways to kill algae, mold, bacteria and other unwelcome intruders, are feeling it hardest. On Amazon, a 50-pound bucket of In The Swim-brand 3-inch tablets that sold for $110 back in 2020 shot up to $170 in April 2021 and is now listed at $250.

Prices are comparable at South Florida retail stores, including Lowes and Home Depot.

Nilson Silva, owner of Boca Raton, Florida-based Master Touch Pool Services says he expects prices of a 50-pound bucket of the three-inch tablets to hit $350 by the end of summer. One reason for the continuing increase, he says, is that some pool service companies bought as many tablets as they could to avoid running out.

At Allbrite Pool Supplies in Coral Springs, prices have climbed so high, I dont even have any in stock at the moment, owner Tracey Eagan says. Theyre hard to find and Im opting not to buy them.

Costs of all dry pool chemicals, including granulated shock used to quickly kill contaminants, have increased, she says.

Making matters worse, a huge fire in January destroyed another chlorine tablet plant, along with 100,000 chlorine tablets, in New Jersey.

Phosphate remover, not included in tablets, might also be necessary to prevent algae growth whether using liquid chlorine or tablets, Silva says.

Balance The Water Chemistry

Test the Water

Check the pH Balance, Total Alkalinity & Sanitizer Level

  • The pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6. Add a pH increaser or decreaser as needed.
  • Check the total alkalinity, which is how well the water resists changes to pH levels. It should be between 80 and 150 parts per million. If its low, add an alkalinity increaser. If its high, add a pH decreaser.
  • Check the sanitizer level. The three types of sanitizer are chlorine, salt, and bromine. Chlorine is the most common type. Adjust the levels to 1-4 ppm.

Note: Always wear safety goggles and rubber gloves when performing water tests and working with chemicals. Also make sure you read and follow each products directions including how to use and how to store the chemicals.

Shock the Pool & Add Algaecide

  • Add pool shock to the water to remove lingering contaminants.
  • Add algaecide. Let the pump run for 24 hours.

Run Water Through the Filter

  • When the water starts to clear, turn the multi-port valve to filter. Open the pressure relief valve on the gauge.
  • Turn on the pump. When a steady stream of water begins to flow from the relief valve, close the valve. Take note of the PSI on the pressure gauge.
  • If you have a DE filter, add fresh DE to the skimmer. The DE will re-coat the grids in the system.
  • Let the pump run for 24 hours when you first open, then about 8-12 hours per day during the swim season.

Alkalinity & Calcium Increaser

Sodium Bicarbonate and Calcium Carbonate are both dry white powder or flake chemicals, and both can remain viable and potent for over 5 years. As with other dry pool chemicals, shelf life can be extended with tightly closed lids to keep out moisture, which can cause clumping and hardening of your water balance chemicals.

Why Is Chlorine Important

  • Chlorine is used as a disinfectant to kill any germs and diseases that might be floating around in a pool, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • According to Rudy Stankowitz, CEO and President of Aquatic Facility Training and Consultants, it also can lead to turbid water that can increase the risk of drowning.
