The Benefits Of Above

Well, if youre in the confusion of choosing which one you should go with: whether it is an inground pool or above-ground pool, you can consider these benefits of above-ground pool:

Based on the functionality, durability, and safety, we can say that they are basically the same.

How Much Are You Willing To Spend

I have made this the first thing to consider because, for most, this will be your greatest limitation. Chances are at the point that you are reading this, you are getting a swimming pool for your backyard and are really excited about that. The cost of the pool may have already been worked out maybe with installation and electric, and it may be a bigger number than you thought. Now, get ready for maybe an even bigger number.

Let me begin to adjust your expectations right here. Pool decks aint cheap! Add the dreams and fantasies of your perfect backyard pool, and the cost will be super high. I think you know what Im talking about here.

Put a realistic figure in your head, now double it. For many, this will be the number that they will need to get what they want as far as a deck goes. Here in Central Florida, people can easily spend in the neighborhood of about $15k for the total pool project including the pool and deck.

Set your highest allowable number that you are willing to spend right now, and then proceed. This is the best and most enjoyable way to get your deck.

Summer is practically here, and if you have an above-ground swimming pool, you’ve probably already discovered why these pools are so popular. They’re inexpensive, quick to assemble, and easy to maintain. Plus, they’re perfect for small yards and urban backyards that otherwise wouldn’t have enough room for a traditional in-ground pool. But one of the drawbacks with a lot of above-ground pools is that they don’t come with decks which means a big part of your yard is out of commission until you build one. The most important part of your deck is that it’s safe for everyone to play on. If a pet could jump from the deck onto the pool area, add a shorter railing or fence to help prevent injuries.

How To Build An Above Ground Pool Deck

Decks constructed around above-ground pools are no different than any other freestanding deck. If you havent yet, we suggest reading our article on how to build a freestanding deck before building one for your pool. They should not be attached to the pool for stability, meaning the deck should be sufficiently stable in all directions by itself, without requiring any lateral or vertical support from the pool. The pool is essentially just adjacent to the deck. For most above-ground pools, these decks will be anywhere between 3 to 6 feet above the ground and must be laterally braced from the beams/joists to the bottom of the posts. Cross-bracing in these regions and in both axes is necessary. At common pool heights, embedding posts in the foundations will not be sufficient for lateral restraint. New building codes addressing decks around pools should also be considered. The maximum gap between the decking and the pool coping is generally 3/4 inch. Slip resistance, gaps between boards and slope of the deck may also be regulated depending on the local codes. These design requirements should also be considered for any deck adjacent swimming pools or hot tubs, whether in or above ground.

Above Ground Pool With Automatic Cover

An above ground pool with an automatic cover? Yes! It can be done with a wooden deck built around the pool. A cover reel sits in the box at the end of the pool, and pull ropes run through the aluminum tracks that run down the side of the pool. Automatic covers offer unparalleled safety for any pool type, keep the pool clean, and save big bucks on pool heating costs.

The raised pool deck surrounding the pool keeps excessive leaves from blowing into the pool. Recessed lights illuminate the raised transition during evening hours. This 18×36 ft. above ground pool is built fully above ground, but the pool deck gives the illusion of an inground pool.

Above Ground Pool Deck Ideas

First of all, the pool deck framing needs to be built level with the top of the pool coping. To provide a custom look, our contractor built a pool deck border around the pool using 2×12 boards angled over the top cap of the pool. The boards are miter cut to create angles that allow them to frame/border the above ground pool. Essentially, instead of seeing the plastic pool coping that comes with an above ground pool, you are covering it and creating your own wood coping. This instantly upgrades the design of your pool deck. It is also a cleaner look.

To conceal the white plastic pool coping from inside the pool, our contractor screwed 2×6 boards to the 2×12 pool deck border boards. Not only does it cover the coping from inside the pool, it provides more of an inground/built-in illusion.

I was able to take a photo of the process above. On the right side, you can see where the 2×6 board is attached and covering the pool coping. On the incomplete side , you can see the exposed pool coping. This small attention to detail makes a world of difference and doesnt cost much more to do.

Another factor to the success of us deceptively making our pool look inground is the natural grade of our yard. You seewe placed our pool where the yard naturally slopes down to a lower level. This way, there are no stairs to have to climb up when trying to access the above ground pool or deck. The deck is level with the upper grade of my backyard . As a result, everything appears level and seamless.

What Will The Deck Look Like

This question is asked mostly for decks that will be built up high along the pool. Decks built higher have a structure underneath the boards you walk on and they are visible from the rest of the yard.

In most cases, its good to cover the outside of an elevated deck with something like latticework or landscaping. Also, consider what the deck will look like with your pool. Will it completely hide the walls of the pool where you can see from the house or just partially. Usually, a deck will improve the look of things around the pool area, but make sure it does by properly visualizing what the deck will look like overall with the pool.

Also, elevated decks need railings so people cant just fall off the side of them. How the railings are designed can make a deck and pool area look great. Nicer deck railing can cost more so consider that too.

Above Ground Pools With Decks

HOW TO Build the Best Deck for Your Above Ground Pool

An above-ground pool with a deck can make use of a one-sided ladder for exiting the pool, and another for entering the deck. If the deck does not come with an entry ladder, a one-sided ladder can be leaned up against it.

Another one-sided ladder can be placed inside the pool for exiting to the deck.

Free-standing deck sets are available that combine the above ground swimming pool ladders and a small deck in one package. Simply assemble the deck at the poolside for an instant deck and ladder setup.

Choosing Materials For Your Deck

There are advantages and disadvantages to many materials that you may like to use for the structure.

Most people choose wood for their above ground pool decks mainly due to its natural beauty, flexibility, and the degree of resilience it offers.

Plasticsandaluminum are other materials that are gaining in popularity.

These materials off far less in the way of problems and they can also withstand the harsh effects of the environment with very minimal maintenance throughout the year.

However, aluminum decks can cost a fortune and plastic decks may appear to be cheaply made depending on the brand and quality of the build.

Pressure-treated timber offers a less expensive option, but it is predisposed to warping and not quite as good to look at.

When not properly cared for, this material can end up cracking and can undergo discoloration from the water and sun over time.

But again, these issues can be avoided with proper care and maintenance throughout the year.

Creating A Beautiful Entertaining Area With An Inexpensive Above Ground Pool Deck

With a personal pool comes a lot of maintenance, so when deciding on the materials to build your above ground pool deck with, consider how much time you will need to spend taking care of it.

Remember, the purpose of an above ground pool deck is to allow you the time to relax and spend with family, not taking up more of your time caring for the area instead.

Think ease of maintenance when choosing the materials for your inexpensive above ground pool deck.

Before getting started on your project, its always a good idea to check with your city to ensure you are obtaining the proper permits to build this structure and also to make sure you meet any requirements enforced by city ordinances.

Some cities require fences, especially of a certain height, locking gates, railings, and other structures and accessories to ensure the safety of those around the area, including your own children and those in the neighborhood.

When planning your pool area, youll want to be sure to think about how you would like to entertain and lounge by your new pool.

Make sure there is plenty of space to get in and out of the pool with a splash deck, and also consider what types of entertaining you plan to do in your new outdoor getaway.

Youll want to be sure there is plenty of room for your lounge furniture, and be sure to consider lighting if you plan on using your pool area after dark.

This is definitely a safety feature that may be required by the city when installing the deck.

Prepare The Job Site Properly For The Deck Foot Anchor

Brian did a really nice job of preparing his job site. He removed the sod and two inches of loose soil and made sure that there was no organic debris that would eventually rot.

He laid out landscaping fabric, put down three inches of ½” or smaller crushed stone to protect against erosion caused by heavy rain, and he also installed a concrete block perimeter. Which made for a really clean look.

This last step is a bit more important for an above ground pool deck because the support structure is almost always visible unless you plan to install a lattice skirt around the deck.
