Use A Pumice Stone Or Nylon Brush Cup

Cleaning your pool tile calcuim & stain removal

You can use a pumice stone or PoolStone to remove caked on calcium deposits.

You will need a lot of elbow grease for this method. Remember, pumice stones can only be used on tile and concrete, never your lining or soft surfaces.

Make sure the stone and the tile you are working on are wet before you start. Otherwise, you risk scratching your pool tile.

You can use a cordless drill and a nylon bristle wheel or brush cup to scrub calcium buildup away. Never use steel wheels or cups as they can damage your tile or cause rust on the bottom of your pool.

Getting Rid Of Calcium Deposits

For light, thin calcium deposits, try using a soft brush and a solution of vinegar and water. If that doesnt work, try cleaning the tile with a solution of water and muriatic acid . Some retailers also sell specially formulated tile cleaners.

Another option is pressure washing. You can rent a pressure washer from just about any big-box home improvement store. Just be sure to use a low setting, and dont use a pressure washer on any loose or cracked tiles!

Pumice Pros and Cons

Pumice stone is another popular choice for removing small calcium scale deposits. Its inexpensive and easy to use, but wears out quickly and its not the fastest method, so this isnt the best option if youre cleaning all of your tile. Just be careful that you dont scratch your tile

If youve tried everything and those stubborn calcium deposits simply wont go away, it might be time to call in the pros. Check with your pool professional to discuss options like bead blasting.

Products For Swimming Pool Tile Maintenance

Soapy water remains the ideal solution for cleaning your tiled pool. The baking soda also works well. But be careful not to use a corrosive or aggressive product that could damage the walls and tiles of your pool. It is best to seek advice from a pool development expert so as not to make a mistake.

To ensure a long life for your pool and to enjoy swimming in the best conditions, regularly cleaning pool tiles is essential.

Finally, schedule your cleaning on weekends as it is a full-day task. You can ask your friends for help. If you dont have a pool right now, then youre here because you probably have a plan to own one. If this is true, choose the right tiles for your pool that are easy to clean and maintain.

Can I Use Regular Kitchen Or Bathroom Tile In My Pool

We recommend sticking with tile made specifically for swimming pools. While regular kitchen and bathroom tile is designed to get wet, its not typically meant to be used outdoors, and exposed to pool chemicals. Tile that has not been designed for swimming pools is more likely to fade, corrode, and crack — and need repairs and replacement — sooner than swimming pool tile.

Why Do Pool Tiles Get Dirty

Before Pool Tile Cleaning

It may seem a usual event for pool tiles to build up a layer of white scum on the side, just above the water level. Natural evaporation reduces the waterline and leaves it vulnerable to staining. Having high pH levels or high alkalinity as H2o evaporates causes Calcium to adhere along the path of the water’s edge, slowly going down. The ideal numbers are pH of 7.4 and alkalinity ranging between 80 and 120 PPM .

Also, an inadequate chemical imbalance of pool-water chemicals causes scales and stains to appear at the water’s edge. Thats why basic know-how of what and why pool water needs, so you stay away from problems.

On general occasion, it is scale or stain that cause discolouration, but so do falling leaves that stick to the sides.

Is all calcium build up the same? No.

You have two primary culprits:

  • One is Calcium silicate, and its the toughest of the two as it usually takes longer to form. Also known as Silicic acid, calcium salt, and calcium silicon oxide, it comes in a colour drifting from white to grey and is not affected by muriatic acid. You need pumice stone to get it off.
  • The second is Calcium carbonate. If you see it bubbling after muriatic acid treatment, then you have a match.
  • Mind both and scrub tiles in time.

Tips For Cleaning Your Pool Tiles

POSTED BY Paul’s Cleaning Team ON February 22, 2021 IN TIPS

A pool can be an inviting spot, but only when water is clear, tiles are free of mineral film, and theres no mould in sight.

Be it sparkling, modern mosaics to classic Spanish-style ceramics, with hygiene and cleaning your spa, pond, or pool tiles, the area at the waterline is most susceptible to stains. Thats where tiles meet air and thus trigger a chemical reaction that fungi, mineral build-ups and various discolouration agents simply love.

However, sometimes you should drain the entire pool to scrub tiles and thus keep tile-work healthy and free from additional maintenance. It is quite popular to tile only the water edging in in-ground pools, making the cleaning process much more manageable.

As professional tile and ground cleaners, at Pauls Cleaning Company we know that colleagues from the pool cleaning branch recommend draining, cleaning, and refilling an in-ground pool every 5-7 years unless a severe problem deems earlier attention.

Spray for 30 seconds, then stop, then go at it again.

How To Clean Lime Stains Off Of Swimming Pool Tiles

Lime, calcium and hard water deposits tend to develop on tiles along the water line in even the cleanest of swimming pools. Scrubbing off these deposits is hard work, but it leaves the pool looking clean and inviting again. Lime deposits create a rough surface on your tiles to which algae can stick, and develop a slimy mess. Although the process to remove the lime stains is time consuming, it’s not difficult.

    1

Drain the pool so the water falls at least 6 inches below the stain line. If you plan to stand in the pool while you scrub the tile, drain the water an additional 6 inches to keep the waves you generate from touching the stained tiles.

    2

Climb in the pool or lie down on the pool edge so you can reach the stained tiles. Apply an acidic gel pool tile cleaner onto a small area of the stained tile with a lint-free cloth stick to an area you can reach without moving to a new position. Rub the tile with the cleaner.

    3

Allow the gel to sit on the area for about 15 minutes. Dip a large nylon brush in a bucket of clean water and scrub the gel-covered area with the brush using a circular motion. Don’t dip the brush into the pool.

    4

Wipe away the gel using a damp rag. Rinse the rag in the bucket and wring it out well before continuing to wipe away more gel.

Using vinegar is a great way to remove any calcium deposits from your tiles. However, the one drawback to using vinegar is this process can take longer than other cleaning methods. Begin the process by heating a towel/rag in the microwave before applying vinegar. Molecules in the vinegar will react with calcium, which slowly separates the deposition of calcium from the pool tiles.
