Keep The Sun Out Of Sight
Next up on our list is yet another practical option, and this one comes with added benefits too. Many houses come with shades over the pool to avoid flying debris in areas prone to hurricanes and tornadoes while also keeping the sun away.
A pool shaded from the direct sunlight protects the water from UV exposure and saves you money on chemicals by keeping chlorine loss at a minimum. While landscaping is a time-consuming process, consider canopying to prevent direct exposure to the sunlight and youre good to go.
Hayward Heatpro Pool Heat Pump
For slightly smaller above-ground pools, Hayward also produces a model that is best suited for pools in the 90,000-140,000 range.
Made with a profiled fan that is engineered to be quiet, and with a corrosion-free gold fin, the Hayward Pool Heat Pump is designed to withstand the elements while also being relatively quiet.
The heat pump is efficient, but best paired with an above-ground pool cover when the pool is not in use. As one reviewer notes, leaving the pool uncovered combined with a half-decent wind quickly robs a lot of the heat being generated by the pump.
Again, Haywards stuff isnt cheap, with the 140,000 BTU model ranging in the $9k+ price range. With the explosion in backyard pools over the past couple of years, this has meant some models dont last long in stock .

Wood Burning Pool Heater
It is not uncommon for pool owners to want to know how to heat an above ground pool using wood. For these owners, investing in a wood-burning heater may be a good idea. While most of the wood pool heaters are custom built or DIY, a few manufacturers offer some great above ground pool heaters that use wood only.;
Wood pool heaters work exactly how you would think. They burn wood and then transfer the heat generated to your water with the help of a pump.;
Before deciding to go with the wood pool heaters, you need to consider how much wood you will burn and how often you will need to keep the heater running for your water to be adequately warm. The answer to these questions will be largely dependent on the time of the year and the pool size.;
In terms of cost-effectiveness, wood-burning heaters are behind solar heaters and heat pumps. However, when the goal is to know how to heat above a small ground pool or a spa, the wood heaters may be ideal.;

How Do You Best Maintain A Pool Heater
To maintain a gas pool heater, you should check the burner inputs for debris. Keep them clear of leaves, cobwebs, and accumulated dirt. If you have a propane pool heater, routinely check the tank gauge to ensure that you have enough propane for operation. For both propane and gas pool heaters, check the fuel lines for leaks. To do so, mix up some dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Apply the mixture to joints in the fuel line. If bubbles appear, you likely have a leak and repairs should be made right away.
For electric pool heaters, turn off the power supply and open the cabinet to safely remove the elements inside. Scrub any debris or corrosion with a wire brush to ensure optimal operation.;
With any type of pool heater, you should read the owners manual and take special note of any maintenance instructions specific to your system. Follow the steps for routine maintenance to ensure a long life of service from your pool heater.;

Saltwater along with poorly balanced water can lead to the corrosion of metal parts in the pool heater.
The manufacturers of pool heaters take it into account and use durable, corrosion-resistant materials in the construction such as stainless steel, titanium, and cupro-nickel. However, you can provide additional protection to your heater using a zinc anode.
This little device can be installed in any place in the plumbing system of your pool where it will be in contact with the water flow. The bonding grid wire is connected to it . The zinc anode will corrode over time and sacrifice itself to prevent the corrosion of metal parts in your pool.

What About A Pool Cover
Thats a good question, since using a cover such as a solar blanket or a winter cover can save up to 70% of your pool heat from escaping from the pool.
You dont have to cover the pool to heat it, but if you do, you will heat the pool for less money while saving energy. Your heater may require less maintenance and should be able to achieve higher overall temperature rise than without a pool cover to retain the heat.

Type Of Pool: Above Ground And Inground
The main difference between an above ground and an inground pool is that an above ground pool loses more heat than an inground pool. The sides of an above-ground pool are not isolated so heat escapes from the top and through the sides.
What does it mean for a heater? The above ground pools require a more powerful heater to increase the water temperature. The manufacturers usually indicate what type of pool their heater will be suitable for. Some heaters are good for both types. For example, gas heaters like the Hayward H-Series Natural gas and Hayward H-Series Propane; heat pump Hayward HP50HA; electric heater Hayward CSPAXI.

How Much Do Heaters For Intex Pools & Above Ground Pool Heaters Cost
On average, you can expect to pay less than $150 for a solar cover and roughly between $2,000-$6,000 for professionally installed solar panels, heat pumps, or gas heaters.
Electric heat pumps and gas heaters will have utility costs associated with running them, while solar will have very little ongoing costs.
Heat Pumps For Hot Tubs And Swim Spas
Our heat pumps can also be installed on hot tubs and swim spas.
Using a heat pump will normally give greatly reduced running costs compared to an electric heater and the use of heat pump on spas and hot tubs is becoming increasingly popular.
The desired water temperature can be set to a maximum of +40c
The heat pump is simply plumbed into the existing spa circuit
We recommend that the existing electric heater is retained as a backup heater to the heat pump for extremely cold air temperatures
Ideally the water should flow through the heat pump first and then the electric heater second.

After another year of not getting my pool above 73-degrees I decided to tackle a DIY pool heater.;And after a few days thought on how to build one that wouldnt ruin the lawn, maximized heat capture and used garden hoses I could re-use later I have one installed with just a few hours collecting parts and assembly.
First, my kids will swim in 70-degree water.
But I just cant do it.;
And living in a northern climate the season is short to setup, use and then put away a pool. Which makes heating a must but I dont want to invest in an expensive heater. And the large solar heaters;that I figured would work best take up too much space.
So, this year, I decided to put my woodworking and design skills to use and build my own.;
While I did look at buying the factory kits the reviews scared me off. And I also have a lawn I dont want killed by black mats.;
In this article Ill show you:
- Supplies youll need
- How to build the platform
- What types of hoses
- How I connected to my pool

Pool Insulation To Reduce Heat Loss:
When planning a pool, think insulation. All pool designs, including a Natural pool or swimming pond, can benefit by incorporating;some rigid panel insulation under and around the structure of a pool to save energy and costs in the long run. Regardless of where you are in the USA or Canada the ambient temperature of the ground is pretty constant, and its usually colder than the ideal temperature for enjoying a swim in the pool, so putting some insulation outside the thermal mass of the water retaining structure is a great first step in reducing the costs associated with heating a pool over the long term.

Set Up The Solar Collector
We have already discussed the factors that you need to keep in mind before installing the heater system.
Buy a solar collector and set it on the roof. Consider the orientation and tilt while installing the collector. It would be best if you dont differ the angle more than 45-degrees from the true south.
Supplies Needed To Build A Diy Pool Heater
Lets get started!
Heres what youll need to build this DIY pool heater:
- 1- 4×8 sheet of plywood
- 2 2x4x96 treated or cedar boards
- 1 4x4x48 treated post
- Outdoor wood screws: 1-1/4, 2 and 3
- 2 solar domes like these Solar Skylights;
- 3 100 kink free hoses
- 2 cans of black semi-gloss paint
- 10 of 1/8 inside diameter Pex tubing
- A collection of pool hoses and plumbing parts
My workshop has a variety of wood, and to keep cost down I used a mixture of cedar, brown treat and OSB for my project.;
If it all goes well and I keep this 3+ years perhaps Ill regret the OSB, but it was on-hand.
Sometimes its best to use what you have vs. fretting about it rotting outside!
