How To Cool Pool Water

Which Pool Filter Is Best

How to cool your pool water cheap.

There are three types of filters: DE , cartridge , and sand. Each has its own pros and cons. A DE pool filter is the most efficient when it comes to filtration, followed by cartridge, and the sand filters. Here is my detailed guide on types of pool filters, how to select the best one, and how to properly maintain it.

Private Pools

DE and cartridge filters are recommended for home pools and may not be the best when it comes to public pools due to their tendency to clog. The filter medium for DE and cartridge filters also require frequent replacement.

Public Pools

A sand filter is always best when it comes to public or semi-public swimming pools, but the sand used in a sand filter also gets clogged and becomes ineffective, which may cause your water to be cloudy or dirty. Consequently, the sand should be replaced every year.

Treating High Calcium Hardness

Reducing high calcium hardness is very difficult. The easiest way to do this, although it doesnt always work, is to replace some of the water with fresh water. If that does not work consult a pool professional, as they will have to add a chemical to keep the calcium in solution that prevents it from depositing.

Will Ice Cool Down A Pool

Adding anything to a pool that is colder than the temperature of the water in the pool, including ice, will help to lower the overall temperature. But you will need to add so much of it to make a difference that it would not be worth the effort. If you have access to a chunk of iceberg that may help though!

Consider A Reversible Heat Pump

Reversible heat pumps are pool heaters that can instantly transform into pool air conditioners with the use of refrigerant and handy temperature controls.

Installing one of these bad boys for your pool is going to be the easiest option, literally cooling your pool on-demand with the flip of a switch. They are, however, a fairly expensive proposition, especially when you consider the initial price and long-term operating costs.

If youre looking for a pool appliance that can do double-duty: heating your pool in the winter and cooling it in the summer, a reversible heat pump may be just what the doctor ordered. Not only will you be more comfortable while using the pool, youll be able to extend your pool season far longer and truly get the most out of your investment.

You Could Drain And Re

Perhaps more realistic is draining a re-filling your pool.

While this is expensive because youre paying for the water, youll also need to consider that youre draining all of the pool chemicals and therefore will need to re-balance the water again. Not only that but if your municipality takes water from a lake rather than a well, it could have practically no impact on the temperature.

More Reasons Why Your Pool Is Cloudy

  • Imbalanced chemicals: An improper chemical balance might mean there is too much or too little chlorine, or the pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, or stabilizer levels are imbalanced.
  • Faulty filter: Poor filtration means you might not be running your filter long enough, you have clogged or worn-out filter cartridges, or there is scaling on filter, which all result in poor water circulation.
  • Environmental factors, debris , and minerals deposits: Dust, pollen, and leaves can build up in your filter and impede the cleaning process. Insects, bird droppings, and run-off water after a storm or rain also contribute to cloudy pool water. Run-off water brings in minerals including nitrates, phosphates, silicates, and sulfates into your pool that may make your water cloudy.
  • Build Shade In The Pool Area:

A poolside sunshade will keep everyone cool outside. It will hinder the sunlight to get into the pool. As a result, the pool water will be cold. It will also help to lower chlorine loss by harmful UV lights. Thus, this step will save your money to spend on pool chemicals.

It is a simple approach to shade an uncovered pool area from the strongest afternoon rays and keep the water chilled. Also, it is the cheapest method to keep the water cool. Anyone can adopt this idea.

Use Your Solar Panel To Cool Your Pool Water

This may come as a surprise to many people. How can a solar panel help to cool water temperature in the pool? Most people assume that the solar panel can only help to warm temperature in their swimming pool.

However, studies show that they can also help to lower water temperature in your swimming pool. A solar panel is not just good at absorbing heat but they are also good at expelling it. If you use your solar panel at night when the outside temperature is lower than the temperature of the water, the solar panel will expel heat from the water, keeping your pool clean. This water-cooling technique only works when the outside temperature is slightly lower than the temperature of the water.

Install A Pool Fountain Or Waterfall

How to keep your pool water COOL

A pool water fountains works similar to running your solar heater at night, but actively works during the day and night.

Pool water fountains aerate your water, and give it constant exposure to the ambient air. Naturally, this aids in the heat loss process, allowing your water to stay noticeably cooler.

The bigger the water fixtures, and the more waterr it moves, the greater the pool cooling effects will be.

But again, everything up to this point only stands as temporary and situational solutions. IF youre looking for a simple and permenant ways to lower your pool temperature, and cool off hot water on demandkeep reading.

Why You Should Consider A Swimming Pool Chiller

The most obvious reason for a pool chiller, of course, is comfort: A good chiller can help take your swimming pool water from too hot to just right.

Whats the Perfect Swimming Pool Temperature?

While theres no true magic number when it comes to swimming pool water temperature, most pool professionals agree that the ideal temperature is between 78 and 84 degrees.

But thats not the only reason to take the plunge and invest in a pool chiller. Here are a few more benefits to keeping your pools temperature in check:

    • More bang for your pool-chemical buck. Swimming pool chemicals such as chlorine arent as effective at higher temperatures, which means so the warmer your water is, the more chemicals youll need to use to get the desired effects.
    • Less algae. Algae thrives in warm temperatures. By lowering your water temperature, youll help keep algae growth in check.
    • Slower evaporation. Your swimming pool water will always evaporate but cooling the water will slow down the evaporation process. The result? Youll conserve water, and youll spend less time scrubbing telltale deposits off your waterline tile.

Cool Pool Water: 6 Ways To Keep Your Pool Water Cool

    • |February 10, 2020

Swimming pools are a cool and refreshing way to beat the heat during the sweltering dog days of summer. There is nothing better on a hot day than jumping into the cool and rejuvenating water of your backyard pool.

So what can you do if your pool water has passed the point of refreshing and now just feels like warm chlorinated bathwater? Dont despair were going to share the best options out there for how to cool your pool in no time so you can actually enjoy your pool all summer long.

    Run The Pump At Night

To amplify the cooling effects of aerators, fountains, and other water features, run the pump the most at night. The cooler air temperatures will help bring the temperature down even faster than running them during daylight hours. But even if you don’t have any water features, running the pool pump overnight will circulate the water and help release some heat into the cool night air.

BONUS TIP: While solar pool covers do a great job of reducing evaporation and helping you save on water and chemicals, they can actually be counterproductive if you’re trying to cool your pool. Solar covers cut down on heat loss due to evaporation. What’s more, they also trap heat from the sun and transfer it into the pool water below. Because of this, solar blankets are capable of increasing water temperatures by up to 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit. They’re perfect for use in the cooler spring and fall months, or even during early and late summer. But they may not be so helpful during peak summer temperatures. Clean and dry your solar cover, put it in storage for a few weeks, then place it back on the pool when temperatures start to drop.

Other Ways To Beat The Heat

A pool chiller isnt the only way to combat high temperatures in your swimming pool. Here are a few things you can do to cool things off:

    • Keep the water moving. Think water features are just for looks? Think again. Waterfalls and fountains keep your swimming pool water moving, which helps release heat and lower the temperature.
    • Allow for air flow. Theres nothing like a summer breeze to help keep your pool water cool, unless your pool is surrounded by tall shrubbery or a thick canopy of trees, which can block airflow to your pools surface.
    • Uncover it! Pool covers are great for keeping debris and dirt out of your pool but they also trap heat.

    Causes For Warm Pools

Warm pools are typically caused by one of the following: outside temperature, pool cover, and pool heater. Fortunately, if the problem is with the cover or the heater, you can fix it. Remove the cover and allow your pool to cool off, or switch off the heater.

If you live in a warmer climate, the problem can be something different entirely, and it can be harder to control the temperature. Those of us residing down South and on the West Coast know all about hot pool temps caused by 90-plus degree days.

If your pool is above ground or fewer than 6 feet deep, direct sunlight can heat the pool to the upper 80s in some cases. The thing is, the sun acts like a heat beam. If the sun beats down on your above ground pool, two things work against you: heat surrounding the pool, and heat reflecting off the shallow pool.

Which Option Is Best For Me

Personally, I recommend getting an evaporative cooler if you need cooling for extended periods. Its affordable, easy to install, and highly effective. Ice is exceptionally useful for fast cooling, but its also a one-time strategy for most people and your pool will likely end up heating back up in just a short amount of time. Solar cooling is also viable, especially in warm regions that get a lot of sunlight, so its worth considering as an alternative. Before you buy any new product though assess your backyard environment and make sure youre providing enough shade for your pool or enough wind exposure to allow mother nature to help out, especially if youre in a hot region.

Should you live in a state that has warm overall temperatures then you will more than likely enjoy the benefits of an aerator. This will ensure the overall water temps can drop and you can have much cooler water in your pool.

In addition, if like myself you have high humidity levels this can drop the levels of water in the pool while also imparting heat into the water in addition.

I turn on all my water features at least 30 minutes before I want to go enjoy the pool so that it starts moving and dropping the temperature level at least a few degrees.

Now also understand me when I say this isnt going to get your pool to refreshing levels of cool, it will just help to move the dial into comfort as opposed to bathwater.

    What Is A Pool Aerator

A pool aerator is a highly useful yet very basic device that can easily be attached to the side of your pool. This device can be attached to the return line of your pool, after which a fountain of water will be sprayed into your pool via the pump. Since this process adds oxygen to the water, the water temperature will start to lower by several degrees, which can make a significant difference in how comfortable you feel when swimming during the summer.

Keep in mind that pool aerators work best in relatively dry climates but can still be effective in all other climate types. If you want the aerator to be as effective as possible, you should turn it on at night. You could also consider installing two or more aerators to your pool in the event that you have more than one return line. In general, you should expect the aerator that you use to lower the temperature of your pool by 3-4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Remove Foreign Particles Scrub And Vacuum The Pool

The environment and weather may also be the cause of cloudy water. To fix and prevent cloudy water, follow all of the best practices below.

    • Foreign particles, small and large, may find their way into the water, especially during spring. Body oil and sunscreen from swimmers also washes off in the water and accumulates in the pool, causing cloudiness. You can use nets to remove visible particles, and you may have to use pool clarifier to clear up the water when cloudiness persists. Also, I prefer using pool flocculant and vacuuming the pool to do away with fine particles that cannot be removed by leaf net or clarifier.
    • Algae also causes cloudiness in its early growth stages. To remove algae, scrub and clean the pool using a large leaf net and vacuum: Then do a pool shock to get rid of any remaining algae. Control the amounts of pH, chlorine, TA, phosphate, and other pool sanitizers to prevent algae growth.
    • Free chlorine depletes more quickly in full sunlight, but if trees and buildings are next to your pool, direct sun will be blocked. If your pool is in direct sunlight, consider using a chlorine stabilizer and a pool cover when not using the pool.
    • Rain also contributes to cloudy water because it dilutes and therefore reduces free chlorine levels. All you have to do is test the chemicals, paying close attention to the chlorine levels, and adjust them as appropriate.

How To Clear Cloudy Pool Water Caused By Low Free Chlorine

Pool Lights Enhance Your Nighttime Swim

Low free chlorine levels are caused by heavy usage, heavy rainfall , or hot sunny days when UV light oxidizes lots of free chlorine. If you have an outdoor pool, you can use a chlorine stabilizer, such as cyanuric acid, to prevent chlorine depletion as a result of direct UV light. Remember that cyanuric acid is very strong, and if it exceeds the recommended levels, free chlorine will disappear, and the water will turn cloudy and be at high risk of algae growth.

In summary, if your combined chlorine reads above 0.5 ppm, your water may turn cloudy and become unsafe for swimming. If this is the case, you need to shock your pool immediately to clear it.

Liquid chlorine or sodium hypochlorite is the best option for a daily free chlorine boost, because it does not affect pH, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid in your water, which make pH, calcium hardness, and cyanuric acid scale high above the recommended levelsleading to cloudy water, metal stains, ammonia, algae, and other pool problems.
