How To Measure A Basic Shape Liner

How To Measure an Inground Pool Liner

It is easier to measure a pool when it is full of water. It is best if the water is clear so you can see the break points. If the water is green and you cant see the bottom, the following instructions still apply, but you will have to feel for the breaks with the vacuum pole. If you cant feel where the breaks are, drain the pool. These instructions apply even is the pool is empty.

  • Download, and Print the Liner Order Form.pdf.
  • You will need a 50 ft tape measure, a 16 or 25 ft tape measure, the pool vacuum pole, a pencil or pen, some electrical or duct tape, and the liner order form.
  • Stretch the 50 ft tape along the length of the pool with the end of the tape aligned with the shallow end wall. If your pool has 2 or 4 ft radius corners, use the vacuum pole as a straight edge to align the end of the tape with the shallow end wall. You can also lie down on the deck, close one eye, and align the end of the tape as if you were shooting pool.
  • Do the same thing at the deep end wall to determine the total length of the pool.
  • Fill in this measurement on the order form. Leave the tape measure in place.
  • Walk to the point where the shallow end meets the top of the slope. Look straight down at the break and record this measurement on the order form. Place a piece of tape or make a mark on the deck at this point.
  • Using the 16 ft tape, measure from here to the deep end wall of the pool . This is your dimension.
  • Things To Know Before Measuring For A New Inground Pool Liner

Unlike above ground pools, inground pools come with a lot of variables in construction which can make the task of getting a replacement inground swimming pool liner a daunting one. However, with the right knowledge and patience, properly measuring for a new inground pool liner can be a simple process.

    Tara’s Tabs Vs Other Methods

Other manufacturers have methods to indicate position points on the liner. They place marks or stickers at the top of the wall. This method is not as accurate as the method Tara uses. The top of the wall can be “off” from the floor in a number of ways. To fit properly the pool liner must fit the bottom of the pool. Tara places the tabs on the bottom of the pool. Tara’s system also eliminates any human error that can occur, by incorporating the tab into the liner design. Once you use our liner tabs you’ll realize why it is the easiest and most effective system in the market.

Measure The Length And Width In Two Spots

The process begins with measuring the length and width of the pool in at least two places. When you measure, pick two parallel locations on the short and long sides, so you have accuracy. Do this rectangular, square, and ovals. If you have an odd shape, these steps do not apply.

When you measure the pool length and width, get in the pool and measure from the liner to liner. Do not measure from the concrete or the coping on the outside of the pool. The ends of the tape measure should touch the walls of the pool.

Some people find measuring easier with string. You can get these measurements with a string that you cut to size, then measure with the tape.

Vacuuming Out The Air Adding The Water

    Pool Liner Measurements

Once the liner is positioned properly, double check to make sure the wall is aligned with the floor by looking for diagonal wrinkles. After making adjustments, youre ready for the vacuums. With this task, selecting the proper number of pumps is the first order of business.

As a general rule, the bigger the pool, the more vacuums you want to use.

“On a smaller pool, one vacuum could work, but we recommend going with at least two,” says LOOP-LOCs Hanley. “You want to keep those vacuums running while filling the pool with water.”

Pools with added amenities and special needs need special attention at this stage, and stricter attention to details is important, according to Shea.

“If you are putting in a lot of fancy features, you are definitely going to want more than one vac to help set the liner,” Shea says. “Next, position your vacuum so that it is located centrally whenever possible, whether you are feeding it through the mouth of the skimmer, down behind the liner, and/or directly down the wall, behind the bead section.”

A best-practice method is to place the vacs in the skimmer areas, according to Hanely, though he again points out installers each have their own ways of doing things.

Once a liner is pulled down tight against the wall, you know youve gotten a proper seal. Any looseness is a sign and air is escaping somewhere. Troubleshoot these areas, and iron out any remaining wrinkles, before adding the water.

How And When To Replace Your Inground Pool Liner

Poor inground pool liners. Theyre so neglected. Like most of us, you probably spend the majority of your pool maintenance time balancing the water and adding chemicals, and making sure your equipment is running smoothly. And there your liner sits, holding thousands of gallons of water, being ignored every day. Its a thankless job.

Eventually, your liner will go on strike. Maybe not altogether or in a big way. Maybe itll just develop a teeny, tiny tear that you cant even see unless youre right up close. And because you cant see it, you might not notice it until its too late and patching isnt enough. Youll need to replace your pool liner.

Measure The Sidewall Slope And Hopper Width

    This ones a little tricky.

Sidewall Slope:Extend one measuring tape across the back end of the pool. Run the telescoping pole down the sidewall of your pool until it hits the bottom. Thats where the slope ends. Lay the pole down onto the coping on the side of the pool. Extend your second measuring tape from the spot where the pole hits the pool edge to the first measuring tape to find the sidewall slope.

Determine the Hopper Width: Subtract both sidewall slopes from the full pool width to determine the hoppers width.

Important:We cant stress this enough. Measuring instructions online, whether written or in a video, only go so far. If youve never measured for a pool liner before, and you have any doubts about doing it yourself, we highly recommend hiring a professional to measure for you. If you measure incorrectly, and get the wrong size liner, youll be out a lot of money for something you cant use, and that cant be altered.

Measure The Hopper Width And Slope

Inground Freeform Vinyl Swimming Pool Liner – How to Measure

Pools have various slopes that make the floor of the pool challenging to measure. At this stage, you will want two poles that you can measure. First, vertically drop one pole to the point where the side slope meets the hopper. Then, from the side of the pool, extend a horizontal pole to meet the vertical pole.

Where the poles meet is the slope measurement. You will get a measurement on the vertical pole and the horizontal pole. You will need both to get the slope measurement. Then, subtract the sidewall slopes from the full pool width to get the width of the hopper.

What Can I Do To Make Sure My Liner Lasts As Long As Possible

Whether you decide to use thinner or thicker vinyl, you want the liner to stay in good condition. Youll have the best luck if you keep up with the maintenance in these three areas.

First, maintain your water chemistry. Specifically, its important to keep chlorine and pH within the ideal range.

Second, ensure the liner is installed properly. If youre not installing it yourself, ask the professional installer questions to be sure the company knows what theyre doing.

Third, try to keep dogs out of the pool as much as possible. If they do get in, keep them away from the liner. Basically, try to reduce the chance of puncture.

    Inground Pool Liner Measuring Tips

Tools You Will Need: Some of the areasthat need to be measured are not easily accessed. To measure these, youwill need to use the plumb bob, string, skimmer pole and tape measure.

Step 1.Let’s say you want to measure the distance from the edge of the hopper to one of the side walls of the pool. At the end of your skimmer pole is a hole that “locks” the skimming net in place. Remove the net and feed the string of the plum bob through the hole. Lay the pool pole on the pool deck at the deep end and keep extending it out, perpendicular to the end of the pool as shown in the diagram below. When the plumb bob is at the intersecting point where the floor and the wall meet, place a pencil mark on the skimmer pole right at the edge of the coping. Place the pole on the deck and measure from the pencil mark to the string hole at the end of the pole. This is the distance you were looking for!

Step 2.To measure the depth in an inaccessible area of the pool, you will need your poleset-up again. Lay the pool pole on the pool deck. Extend it out, until the plum bob is just touching the bottom. Makea mental note as to where the string is entering the water and remove thepole to the deck. Measure the string to the end of the plum bob as shown in “A” in the diagram below. Now measurefrom the water surface up to the liner track. Add the 2 numbers togetherand this gives you the actual depth of the pool in that location.
