Start Filling The Pool

How To Measure an Inground Pool Liner

You can choose from a few pool water delivery methods, but lets go with the easiest. Run a garden hose into the deep end and turn on the spigot. When the shallow end contains six inches of water, turn off the Shop-Vac. Remove the duct tape, pull the hose out, and push the liner back into the bead track.

Different Types Of Liners

Above ground pools will use one of three different types of liners. They can either be an overlap, unibead, or a beaded liner. If you are looking for an overlap liner, you will not need to know the height of your pool. Overlap liners come with extra material that will hang over the pool wall and will work for pools that are 48-inches to 54-inches in height. If you are replacing your liner with a unibead or beaded liner, knowing the height of the pool is absolutely necessary. These types of liners are made to fit the height of the pool exactly.

Test And Balance The Water

How To Measure an Inground Pool Liner

You need to get a baseline, which will tell you which chemicals to use and how much. For this, its best to use a high-quality testing kit rather than test strips in order to get more accurate results.

Once you know whats going on in the water, you can follow the same steps to open an inground pool, including using all the same chemicals.

Important: Do not skip the pool shock. Water that comes directly from your spigot, even though its been through a water treatment plant, can still contain microorganisms like algae spores and bacteria. Be sure to wait until dusk or nighttime to shock your pool.

Do Thicker Vinyl Liners Last Longer

The standard lifespan for a vinyl liner is 59 years regardless of thickness. But does this upgrade make it last longer? The answer is probably.

Theres a caveat: a correctly installed 20-mil liner will last longer than a poorly installed 27-mil liner. When a liner is installed incorrectly, it can be too stretched or have air gaps in the corners, which can lead to dry rotting and cause premature failure.

If both liners are properly installed, the thicker liner should last longer, although there are so many variables involved that its hard to say.

The thicker vinyl is like a good insurance policy: problems will likely come up either way, but a thicker vinyl is additional protection from the worst damage.

Alternatives To Inground Vinyl Liner Pools

Liner maintenance is a common issue for inground vinyl liner pools. For comparison, fiberglass pools are actually fine for dogs to play in. Their claws cant puncture or tear the gel coat. Fiberglass pools also have no liner to replace, which reduces your lifetime cost of ownershipliner replacements cost more in the long run.

Concrete pools are durable as well and wont be scratched or split by dog claws or sharp objects that fall in the pool. While they have a higher lifetime cost for maintenance, they look classic and dont lose resale value due to future vinyl liner replacements.

Is The Upgrade Worth It

In our opinion, yes, the upgrade is worth it because a thicker liner helps protect from punctures in the liner. It also provides insurance when the liner is punctured, so that in many cases it can be patched rather than needing to be completely replaced.

Story time!

Years ago, our co-owner Jason Hughes had a service call for a vinyl liner pool. The pool owner had let his German shepherd swim in the pool every day and was now trying to sell his house and avoid a liner replacement.

There were so many holes in the liner that the water had leaked down to below knee level and Jason could hear the water falling behind the liner in a cascade. After 4 hours and over 100 patches, he repaired the liner so that it wasnt leaking anymore.

Now, this was a 27-mil liner, so it was pretty thick. The pool owner probably should have replaced the liner, but the point here is that he was able to patch the material without a full replacement, which would have cost over $4,000. He never could have done that with a 20-mil liner.

How To Measure For An In

I dont think I need to measure, my pool is just a standard size. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as standard when it comes to measuring for in-ground pool liners.

The reason for this is that there are so many different styles and shapes of pools, and even mass-produced in-ground pool kits may not always be installed exactly to plan as a result of conditions in each yard.

Because of all the different pool types out there, very few retailers will stock in-ground pool liners they will almost always be custom made, so providing accurate measurements is critical.

The specific measurements youll need to provide will depend on the shape of your pool, but every set of liner dimensions will need to include the length and width of the pool, corner type, wall height and deep-end depth, and bottom contour dimensions. Ill be discussing some helpful measuring tips that will apply to most pool owners, but for detailed specifications and directions of what measurements are required for your specific pool shape and the form to submit, refer to our specific and easy to follow in-ground liner measuring form, Liner Measuring Made Easy.

Measuring Your Pools Length & Width

How to measure for an inground pool liner

Width and length measurements are pretty simple to take you just need to measure the longest and widest points of the pool. The biggest thing to keep in mind is to make sure that the measurements are taken at the bead receiver and not at the edge of the coping.

As you can see in the image, taking the dimensions from the pool deck or the coping could result in a difference of several inches, which is huge when it comes to in-ground liner measurements. The diagram points to two places because in some instances pools will have tile borders running across the top and the liner will snap in to a track that is underneath that border. The important thing is to take the measurements from the bead receiver, wherever that may be.

Tara’s Tabs Vs Other Methods

Other manufacturers have methods to indicate position points on the liner. They place marks or stickers at the top of the wall. This method is not as accurate as the method Tara uses. The top of the wall can be “off” from the floor in a number of ways. To fit properly the pool liner must fit the bottom of the pool. Tara places the tabs on the bottom of the pool. Tara’s system also eliminates any human error that can occur, by incorporating the tab into the liner design. Once you use our liner tabs you’ll realize why it is the easiest and most effective system in the market.

Measure The Length Of The Floor

The liner company will need to know the length of the pool floor. From the inside of the pool walls, measure the shallow end from the point where the shallow end begins to the point where the liner attaches to the wall. You might want to enlist a friend to help with the next measurements.

Once youve finished measuring the shallow, move to the slop. Measure the slope from top to bottom. Then, measure the deep end where it is flat . Finally, measure the deep end slope to the point where the liner attaches to the wall. You can use a length of string or a tape measure for these measurements.

Inground Pool Liners: Strong But Not Invincible

Anything that can hold tens of thousands of gallons of chemically treated water day in and day out has to be super strong, right? Absolutely. Inground pool liners are built to be sturdy and long lasting.

But everything eventually wears out over time, even the heavy-duty vinyl used in your liner. And sometimes, certain conditions or events occur that can speed the aging process, or just outright cause damage that can only be addressed with the purchase of a new liner.

Measuring The Distance From A And The Distance From B

Inground Freeform Vinyl Swimming Pool Liner – How to Measure

You can measure from A & B two different ways. Either use two different color tape measures and measure from both A & B at the same time . If you go this route you’ll want to pull both tape measures to point one on your pool’s perimeter at the same time. You’ll record the measurement you find from tape measure A in the A column on your measuring form and repeat for B.

If you only have one tap measure, you can measure from Stake A first and then go back to do B, as shown below. Secure the end to point A on your AB line and measure the distance to point #1. Note the distance in the “A” column on the chart provided within the form. Continue around the pool until you have recorded all your points with an “A” measurement.

Then secure your measuring tape to point B and repeat the process.

PRO TIP: Go back and spot check a couple of measurements again to make sure they are as accurate as possible.

Only Use Virgin Vinyl

Pool liners are made of vinyl. You want one made of virgin vinyl without any used, composite, or mixed products. Virgin vinyl is strong and will expand and contract for a longer time before weakening, especially when compared to other types of recycled or mixed vinyl. New vinyl will stand up to the chemicals and the UV rays that bombard it each day.

Identifying Your Above Ground Pool Liners Bead Type

Before you can order a new pool liner for your above ground pool you must first determine the type of liner you already have. To do this you’ll need to look under the top rail or pool coping which surrounds the perimeter of your pool. If you can’t get a good look under the top rail or pool coping you may need to remove it.

Vinyl pool coping is usually screwed into your pool wall. Find and remove the screws in a small section so you can pry up the coping and look underneath to determine your type of liner. Be careful doing this. Most pools have a 6-8″ shelf at the top of the pool wall that might be fragile.

Once you have exposed the top rail/coping then you’ll need to take a look at how the liner is attached to the pool wall. The way it is attached will determine whether you have an overlap, beaded or U/J bead liner.

Above Ground Overlap Pool Liners

What is an Above Ground Overlap Pool Liner?

Above ground overlap liners are pulled over the wall and rolled up on the exterior side of the pool. This style of liner will normally have a round or flat plastic coping that snaps over top of the liner to keep it in place. Above ground overlap liners are the most prevalent type and are the least expensive.

How To Measure For The Liner

Choosing your liner and your warranty is the easy part. The challenging part involves measuring the liner, especially if you have a pool that is not a rectangle or square. If you have a kidney-shaped pool or an unusual shape like a Grecian pool or L-shape, you might want the company that is replacing the liner to measure your pool. Draining your pool is helpful.

Unfortunately, there arent any standard pool shapes. The length and width might be somewhat standard, but the depth changes probably arent. And, after inground pools are installed, they settle and change slightly. If your liner manufacturer has a template or measurement tips, follow them carefully because the measurements you send are what they will cut.

As you measure the parts of your pool, record them on a drawing that represents your pool. The drawing does not have to be to scale.

If you do measure your liner yourself, you will need a few supplies.

  • The manufacturers liner template or paper
  • Pen or pencil
  • Two long roles of string
  • Chalk
  • Telescoping pole
