How To Repair Plaster When Your Pool Is Empty
With a drained pool, you can easily get in there and take care of the damage. However, without the water, there are more opportunities to damage the rest of the plaster. The pool is meant to be full of water and anytime its not, youll need to be careful to protect your pool. This means not using your empty pool as a skate park or half pipe.
Speaking of protection, whenever youre flexing your DIY skills, you want to protect numero uno first: thats you. Always wear eye protection, ear protection , and its a good idea to have a full face shield too.
How Much Does Resurfacing Cost
The short answer? It depends.
Several factors influence how much your pool resurfacing costs will be. The most important factors are generally the size of your pool, the material you use to fix the surface, and the extent of the damage to the pools surface. The need for leak detection or crack repair will also influence the cost.
We know that its helpful to have a ballpark figure when budgeting for any pool maintenance or repair. If you know your pools measurements, you can get an idea of how much pool plaster delamination repair will cost even before having a consultation by using our pool resurfacing cost calculator.
What Is The Cost Of Pool Plastering
While not the only factor involved in owning and maintaining a pool, the cost is one of the top considerations for many owners. The cost of pool plastering can vary depending on many factors:
- Size of Pool
- Desired Plaster Style, Color, and Finish
- Any Repairs Or Fixes To Pools Structure
An average sized pool around 15,000 gallons with a simple pool plastering finish can cost anywhere between $2,500 $3500.
While the potential cost of pool plastering may scare away some pool owners, consider it an investment in the future of your pool and your home enjoyment and value. How Long Does Plaster Last In A Swimming Pool
Typically a plaster lined swimming pool will last 10 to 20 years depending on usage and how the pool has been looked after. Over time plaster will lose its clean, white appearance and build up a dullness and accumulate etches, pitting or stains. Most people realise and accept this is the normal aging of the pool surface but other pool owners want their pool to look great all the time so they choose to have the pool renovated more frequently. Hotels, apartments and other community properties will more frequently renovate their pools to uphold their high standards of maintenance and presentation.

Does Pool Plastering Fix Cracks & Leaks
Whether or not pool plastering will treat cracks and leaks depends on the type of crack you have. If the damages are surface-level only impacting the plaster you may be able to fix and treat the cracks with a new plastering or plaster crack sealing. It is always highly recommended to run a leak detection test prior to your replaster job to ensure all leaks are handled properly.
If your cracks or leaks are structural, a new pool plastering may provide a short-term fix but will not offer long-term results. One of the best ways to fix and repair cracks or leaks in your pool is to handle them at the structural level. When you are replacing your pool plaster is the perfect time to inspect for any potential leaks, cracks, or other issues.
Always remember: Plastering over cracks or leaks is like adding a bandaid to a cut. They need stitches its better to deal with the problem head-on.

Pool Plaster Repair: How To Repair In 6 Easy Steps
- |June 17, 2020
No one knows how it happened. Maybe it was the overzealous game of pool volleyball last week or maybe it was the Tonka truck your kid brought into the pool against your wishes. Either way, now theres a crack or gouge in your pool plaster that needs to be fixed.
Its important to address damage to your pool as soon as possible because what begins as a small plaster crack could soon become a more extensive leak. But before you panic and call a professional, take a deep breath. Depending on the size and depth of the damage, you may actually be able to repair it yourself pretty easily.

Is There An Alternative To Replastering A Pool
If replastering your pool sounds like a big project, you might be wondering if there is a way to avoid doing it. The short answer is that you have several other options. Unfortunately, most are temporary fixes or even more expensive. Lets go over each one.
Patching. As mentioned above, you could patch your pool when you notice rough areas or places where the plaster has worn through. However, this is not only a very temporary solution, its downright unsightly, because the patch materials will never match the plaster.
Acid wash. This is a quick fix that works for stains, but not so much for plaster thats wearing away. In fact, it actually makes your plaster wear away faster because it essentially takes off the top, stained layer. Use an acide wash only if aesthetics are really that important to you.
Tile. Want a solution thats incredibly durable and striking in appearance? Not worried about cost?
Tiling a pool can be a great decision. Compared to the other choices, tile basically lasts forever, as long as you maintain it. Even better, it looks absolutely gorgeous, and you can create pretty much any design that you imagine.
The downside is that tile is really, really expensive. How much are we talking about? Typically anywhere from $75-$100 per square foot. If you wanted to tile your entire pool surface, that would get very expensive very quickly.
So why dont more people use paint today?
The Cost To Repair A Plaster Swimming Pool
Its difficult to quote the cost to repair plaster swimming pools without first surveying the damage. Each pool repair is different and there is no standard price. However, once a professional comes out to assess the situation, youll have a better understanding of the cost. We may even be able to provide you with the average cost of crack repair over the phone if you want to give us a call. However, this number could change once we see the damage first-hand.
Typically, its far less expensive to fix a surface crack than it is to fix a structural crack or a pool leak. This is another reason why you want to get any cracks checked out as early as possible. Repairs become more detailed and costly when ignored or delayed.

Utilize A Bond Kote Material As A Bonding Agent
Next, it is important to add a bonding material to ensure proper adhesion between the old and new pool plastering finish. Bond Kote material is an acrylic modified cement and sand mixture made up of one-part resin and one-part bonding cement.
Once these two parts are mixed, they then are rolled or sprayed onto the pool wall and flooring, allowing for the bonding between the old and new to occur.
Pool Plaster Repair: Patching

It could be more than a crack or small spot that needs to be fixed. Sometimes, plaster will bubble, or become loose. Youll have to empty the pool for this repair.

Surface Etching Or Corrosion
Common in most pools, these small surface irregularities are sometimes the result of improper plaster mixing or curing. This issue can also be caused by improper water chemistry, which erodes softer surface areas like plaster. Damage from etching and corrosion is not normally patched, but can be sanded.
Applying The Patching Material
Once you have your patching material mixed, shape the plaster patch to fit into the crevice. If you are trying to fix cracks, mold it into a tube-like shape. If youre repairing a small hole, roll the plaster into a ball. Once youve molded your plaster, press it down into the cracks or holes.
After pressing down your material, take a trowel and smooth out the top of the mix and fill in the surrounding spots of your repairs. Once you check to see if everything is secure and full, you can let the material dry and continue keeping your pool in good condition.
When working with plaster repairs in a full pool, this option works best if there is minimal damage to your plaster, and if it is dealt with quickly. If the damage is a little too deep or excessive, you may want to skip doing this set of repairs in a wet pool and consider draining it dry for repairs the appropriate type of repairs.
