Vacuuming your above-ground pool task is a crucial step in maintaining and cleaning your pool and keeping the water crystal clear. Here is how to do it right the first time.

If you are an above-ground pool owner , chances are that you have vacuumed your swimming pool before.

The question is are you doing it the right way?

Because if you are not, then you could be risking doing such things as damaging your pools vinyl liner and clogging up your swimming pools all-important filtration equipment. The latter of which can lead to unsightly and unhealthy pool water.

The good news is all of this can be avoided by following a few simple tips for making the most of the time spent using your above-ground pool vacuum.

Advice which I am prepared to share after working in the swimming pool repair and maintenance field for over 26-years.

Lets jump right in.

Simple Steps To Vacuuming Your Above Ground Pool

Attach vacuum hose and pole to vacuum head. Submerge unit in pool.

Hold other end of hose over water return. Hose will fill with water, driving out all air trapped in hose.

While holding hose below water, place the vacuum plate into the skimmer, leaving the leaf basket in place. Quickly attach hose to elbow fitting. You are now ready to vacuum.

If your skimmer was not supplied with an elbow fitting, simply take off the skimmer cover and put the vacuum hose directly on to the vacuum plate.

Vacuuming your vinyl lined pool is a breeze with this specially designed vinyl liner vacuum head. Precisely weighted for effortless use, it leaves no trail at the pool bottom like other vacuum heads.

Choose Your Filter Valve Setting

For light vacuuming, you can leave your multiport valve filter set to Filter. For bigger jobs and larger amounts of debris, set your filter system to the Waste setting, which does sends the water down the drain, rather than through the filter.

Refill as you go

When using your pool filters Waste setting, you might notice your pool water level dropping. To keep your pool properly filled, use a garden hose to ensure a steady stream of fresh water and keep your water level even.

Do You Vacuum A Pool On Backwash Or Waste

If youre vacuuming a lot of heavy debris out of your pool, your filter setting should be turned to Waste. Do not use the Backwash setting. The goal is the bypass the filter entirely which is what the Waste setting does. Backwashing reverses the flow of water through your filter to clean it out.

Above Ground Pool Vacuuming Instructions

1. Hook the vacuum head to the pole and attach the vacuum hose to the head.

2. Stand the pole into the pool

3. Hold the other end of the vacuum hose with the vacuum adapter or vacuum plate attached in front of the eyeball where the water blows back into the pool. Allow the hose to fill with water.

4. If you have a Doughboy pool, insert the vacuum adapter into the hole under the skimmer opening and place the lid down into the skimmer. If its not a Doughboy pool and you are using a vacuum plate, place it into the skimmer.

5. If you are vacuuming any type of algae, place your filter on the waste or drain setting on the valve and be sure to run water into your pool as you are vacuuming due to water loss.

6. When you are finished vacuuming, turn the pump off, then remove the vacuuming equipment from the pool. Empty your pump and skimmer baskets.

7. Then return your filter to the normal filter setting.

What Setting To Put Your Pool Pump On

If the pool has light to moderate sediment levels, leave the filter valve setting in the Filter position. This way, dirty vacuum water will run through the pool filter to get rid of contaminants, while filtered water gets through the return lines back to the pool. The overall water level wont change much.

However, if the pool is contaminated with lots of sediment, such as after an acute algae bloom, set the multiport filter valve to Waste or Drain. Its the only sure way to bypass the filter and direct the contaminated water to an external drain for disposal.

This comes in handy to prevent clogging your filter with sediment. Be sure to pump in more fresh water to restore the normal water level because you always discharge water down the drain when vacuuming to Waste.

If it is covered with debris or algae, remove the connector chamber, cylinder, and piston. Pull out the randomizer tube and clean the filter connector. If the connector is clean, replace the piston.
  • If the randomizer tube is moving: Watch the randomizer ball in the mechanism. If it does not move within 2 minutes, replace the randomizer tube and piston.

Q: Should I Vacuum My Pool Of Waste Or Filter

Above-ground pools are best kept clean by using a combination of filtration and vacuuming. While filters are essential pieces of pool construction that passively maintain water quality, a vacuum supplements the filter by addressing submerged waste and static buildup that a filter cannot collect on its own.
