Georgia Health Officials Urge Caution As Pools Prepare To Open Temperatures Rise

Summer-like temperatures are coming, and some pools will start to open up.

Public pools will be allowed to reopen May 13, according to Georgia Governor Brian Kemps order. The Georgia Department of Public Health is backing his decision. However, officials are asking you to not get into swimming pools with large groups right now. They advise that you continue to practice social distancing.

The Department of Public Health still recommends that everyone stay six feet apart.

Clay Poole, the district environmental health director for DPH, said COVID-19 cannot survive in saltwater or chlorine pools.

Those are both disinfectant pools and the chlorine levels, if theyre maintained properly, can kill the virus. We do not have evidence at this time of water transmitting the virus in a chemically treated swimming pool, said Poole.

If you do plan to make a splash in your backyard pool, local leaders said you need to know how to swim. If you dont, you should have someone who does keep an eye on you.

Somebody at the house needs to know how to swim if the kids are going to be in the water because anything can go wrong. If parents dont know how to swim and your kids are there in a panic situation then whats gonna happen?” asked Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler.

Fowler said you should always swim with a buddy. He said there have already been two drownings so far this year in Dougherty County and both incidents involved adults.

When Is The Best Time To Open My Swimming Pool

Well, it’s that time of year again, folks. And after the winter we had here in Virginia, I say good riddance!

But with the warmer weather, the swimming bug’ will soon be affecting all of us.

In fact, as I write this article and sit in my car at a parking lot in Yorktown, Virginia, the temperature outside is about 93°F degrees on April 7. Wow, now that’s what I call skipping spring!

But during this time of year, many pool owners debate about when they should open their pools. When is too early? When is too late?

This is a legitimate concern, and this article will discuss my thoughts on the matter.

This is my general, all-encompassing rule of thumb:

When the temperature is consistently above 70 degrees during the day, it’s time to open the pool.

Why so early, you ask? Well, let me give you 5 main reasons:

How To Follow The Georgia Senate Runoffs

West End, Georgia Avenue Public Pools to Stay Open Later ...

The New York Times will provide live coverage of two races in Georgia that will determine control of the Senate.

    • Read in app

Georgia polls open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday in the all-important Senate runoff elections, but we wont start getting results until shortly after voting locations start closing at 7 p.m. With New York Times reporters on the ground across the state, heres a quick guide for how to follow along.

    First, the races:

One is a regularly scheduled contest in which David Perdue, a Republican whose Senate term expired over the weekend, is running for a second term against Jon Ossoff, a Democrat. Mr. Perdue almost won in November but ended up just shy of a majority, with 49.7 percent of the vote to Mr. Ossoffs 47.9 percent, triggering a runoff under Georgia law.

The second race is a special election between Senator Kelly Loeffler, a Republican, and the Rev. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat. In a crowded field in November, Mr. Warnock got 32.9 percent of the vote and Ms. Loeffler, who was appointed to her seat, got 25.9 percent. The winner of the runoff will serve out the remainder of former Senator Johnny Isaksons term, which ends in 2022.

If Democrats win both races, they will create a 50-50 split in the Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris acting as tiebreaker. If Republicans win either race, they will retain control of the Senate and the ability to block much of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.s agenda.

The Best Way To Keep Your Swimming Pool Open During The Winter

Once it starts getting cold, it is time to make sure you are ready for the cold. Here are a few things you should keep in mind throughout the winter when you keep your swimming pool open.

#1 You need to ensure that your pool heater or your heat pump is designed to work during cold times. There are some heat pumps that cannot function when it gets below 50 degrees, but if you plan on running yours during the cold you can find some that are designed to work into the 20-degree marks. You may see them referred to on the market as ice breakers or hot gas defrost. These will be great allies for you to keep your pool water warm and ice-free during the winter.

#2 You arent just thinking about keeping your pool a comfortable temperature so you can use it, you are thinking about ensuring that the pipes are not going to freeze and cause problems. The heater must be left on at all times or you may find the pipes feeding the pool have frozen and caused you a great deal of damage and expenses. You should ensure that you have a backup power source in case of winter storms that come and knock out the power as well.

#3 Design your pool deck so that you can shovel it easily. You will find that heat from the pool will keep the close edges from freezing with ice and snow, but the pathway from your house to the pool may be dangerous if you dont keep it well maintained.
