What Size Wire Do I Need For A 220v Hot Tub
The voltage of a hot tub whether it is 120 or 240 is the voltage fed to the tub itself. Most larger size tubs is 30 A and above are all 240 V tubs. Keep in mind that most 240 V tubs require both voltages 120 and 240.
This is why it is necessary to run a three connecter white, red and black so you have both 120 and 240 V voltages. Even though the tub runs with 240 V heating elements some of the motors may still require 120 as well as a sensitive electronics. There are some smaller hot tubs that are plug into 120 volt only. These are known as soft tubs.

Electrical Hookup Requirements For Hot Tubs
Most spas will operate with either 50 or 60 amp dedicated service at 220-240 volts.
Hooking up a 230 volt hot tub involves an electrician integrating the main house panel with a 50 or 60 amp breaker, the external GFCI/disconnect box and the spa pak/hot tub controller box. Be sure that the GFCI should corresponds to the house breaker, so for instance a 60A GFCI should be paired with a 60A house breaker. Whether 50A or 60A is required depends on the number of pumps and size of heater in the spa.
For most exterior spas, the electrician will run a 4-wire number 6 or number 8 wire to the spa location. The size of the wire to be used is determined by the maximum current draw of the hot tub, the length of the wire run and the NEC or local codes. Use thermoplastic nylon insulated copper wire, never aluminum.

Lay The Conduit & Pull Wire
Install the conduit in a trench. Conduit is a long tube of metal or PVC that will hold the electrical wires. Consult your local building code to determine how deep to lay the conduit. Some conduit trenches must be as deep as 18 inches.
Use a shovel to dig the conduit trench. Carefully remove the sod from the trench location. If necessary, cut it into manageable squares, and set it aside. The trench should extend from the spa panel to the spa and from the spa panel to the electrical breaker panel. Do not bury conduit underneath the hot tub.
The conduit will exit the house near the breaker panel, so use a hole saw to create an opening through the outside wall. Then, measure, cut and cement the conduit and fittings. Your measurements and cuts should cover the distance down the wall from the breaker panel, across the trench and up to the spa panel, then down from the spa panel and across the trench to the spa.
If the underground run is shorter than six feet, you can use a conduit made of liquid-tight flexible metal or a non-metallic material. Conduit sections longer than six feet should be made of rigid metal, intermediate metal, or rigid, non-metallic materials listed for direct burial. PVC is a popular option.
Connect the indoor and outdoor conduits by inserting an LB fitting through the hole in the exterior wall. Next, run the wire.
Tip: Before you dig, contact your local utility company to mark your utilities and ensure you don’t cut into any buried lines, pipes or cables.

Wire Size & Type For Hot Tubs
After reviewing the spa owner’s manual, our electrician determined that our project needed #6 THHN stranded copper wire. He used four individual insulated conductors: red & black-hot, white-neutral, and green-ground wire in our example.
Your wire gauge requirements may differ from our example, depending upon the spa manufacturer’s specification, code requirements, and wire type. Unusually long runs may require larger wire size, as determined by the electrician.
Although copper is not cheap, scrimping by using under-size wire is a hazardous false economy. It may violate code requirements and/or void your equipment manufacturer’s warranty. Aluminum or copper-clad aluminum wire is not recommended. Sheathed cable, i.e. Romex®, is not permitted inside underground conduit.
Note: Spa control box terminals generally cannot accommodate wire larger than #6. Refer to the owner’s manual.

Does Hot Tub Wiring Need To Be Buried
If your hot tub is installed on your deck then theres no need to bury your wire. Just make sure you use the appropriate size or appropriate kind of wire like mentioned above to the hot tub. However not all hot tubs are on decks and some are away from home on a separate concrete pad.
This means you will need to use the proper insulated and type of wire . If it is wired in a non-vehicle area you need a minimum of 18 inches depth. Its also needs to be backfilled with sand. Hot Tub Wiring And Conduit

Note that a frost expansion joint may be required at the point where conduit comes out of the ground and enters a wall or wall mounted panel.

Have The Spa Inspected

Gfci Tripping Due To Miswired Neutral
The most common wiring mistake occurs with 4-wire systems. Unfortunately, we’ve found that even a few professional electricians fail on this one.
Attach the white neutral wire to the spa’s control box directly to the neutral terminal of the GFCI breaker. See our 4-wire diagrams above. Do not attach it to the sub-panel grounding bar. Miswiring it to ground instantly trips the GFCI when energized, cutting power to the hot tub.

Prepare Your Hot Tub Control Panel
The 6/3 wire with thermoplastic nylon insulation is recommended for hot tub wiring. Avoid using aluminum wire. Because aluminium wiring is dangerous. The copper wire size recommended for hot tubs is 6 AWG.
Begin at the LB fitting. You have to use the fish tape to drag the wires from the LB fitting to the tub panel. Allow at least 6 inches of wire to hang from the tub panel.
Furthermore, push the wires through the LB fitting and into the house to the breaker panel. That will leave at least 6 inches of additional wire dangling.
When wiring the panel, make sure to follow the directions that came with your tub panel. Pull the wire through the conduit from the tub panel to the tubs control panel.
Again use the fish tape to do so. Allow at least 6 inches of excess wiring at either end.
To begin, connect the wires that lead to the hot tub. Connect the red, white, and black wires to the GFCI breakers bottom. Once done, you need to attach the grounding wire thats green to the ground bar.
Connect the wires from the breaker panel now. Its time to attach both the black and red wires now. They should be attached to the breaker feed lugs thats on the top of the breaker.
Again connect the white wire to the neutral bar on the line. Connect the ground bar with the green grounding wire afterward.
Now, you might not have a conduit. In that case, you can easily install the conduit by drilling a hole in the tubs toe kick.

Wire Your Hot Tub Panel To Your Breaker Panel
Confirm that the main breaker is turned off and that no electricity is available.
Be careful even if the main breaker is turned off. Because the power companys lines may remain active. Thats why when operating in the breaker box, take caution.
Connect the red and black wires to a 240V double-pole GFCI circuit breaker. If the hot tub is new then the circuit breaker should be labeled.
Use Metal Conduit Only In Extreme Conditions
Rigid metal conduits are a sensible choice for people that want the thickest and heaviest option available. It allows you to run wires in places that expose the wire to extreme conditions. That includes under driveways.
However, rigid metal conduits are a bad idea for Romex, which is the type you will most likely use because the metal conduit can damage the wires.
