How to Fix an Unlevel Above Ground Pool

There are several reasons why people want to avoid completely emptying the water.

  • Its time-consuming to drain and refill.
  • Its a waste of water. These days, were all conscious of the need to conserve water.
  • Totally emptying the pool can cause the walls to collapse.
  • The walls can become dry, brittle, and susceptible to UV damage.

However, it will be harder to re-level when full because of the weight, so youll need to remove at least some water before you start re-leveling. You can drain it halfway or more.

My Intex Pool Is Unlevel By A Few Inches What Should I Do

So youve got yourself a brand new Intex pool, installed it in your backyard, but theres only one slight problem.

Your Intex pool is unlevel, and you are wondering if you can still use it without any grave consequences.

Most Intex pool owners often ask us what they can do if their Intex pool is unlevel by a couple of inches, so weve decided to create this guide just for them. We will tackle everything you need to know how to deal with unlevel ground and what kind of leveling blocks or materials you can make use of so you can start using your swimming pool soon.

To get started, lets discuss if you can use your Intex pool if its on uneven ground and what are the risks of using an unlevel Intex pool, even if its just for a couple of inches.

When Digging Down You May Run Into Something

There is no telling what might be in the earth. Last month, I was doing a one foot down dig for a 27 pool. At about ten inches down, I ran into a tree stump that was there before the house was built. It was too big to do anything with, so we had to move the pool location over about three feet from where they wanted it.

When going into the earth, you can run into things that will change the location or how deep you can go down. I have run into electrical lines , water mains, old dump sites for trash, huge boulders, and old concrete structures. They all caused the job to change in some way.

The most common issue I run into when digging a hole for an above ground pool is hitting water. Its hard to determine what the water table is in any given area or yard. Most areas are OK, but if you live in a low or wet area, dont be surprised if you run into water.

Of course, if anything is in question, locate all power, gas, and water lines before you dig. Keep in mind that you, the landowner is responsible for whats in the ground. This is a general rule regardless of whatever a contract says. If anything is in question around where you want the pool hole dug, investigate and locate first. That way, you wont be shocked when the digger runs into your drain field or something.

Can I Fix A Pool That Has Collapsed

Once your pool walls collapse, they cannot be fixed. You will need to replace the walls completely.

Walls that have buckled or twisted should be replaced as well. You may find some places that suggest you can solve your buckle problem using a wood block and hammer or placing a flat piece of steel on the inside to support it. However, these fixes are not permanent and may not even work.

Walls that have been compromised will eventually collapse over time and need to be replaced before that happens.

Intex Pool On Unlevel Concrete Fix

above ground swimming

One of the best surfaces to setup your Intex pool is on concrete, but what if the concrete is unlevel?

For Intex pool owners that are setting their above ground pools on an unlevel concrete surface, you have to measure first how many inches your Intex pool is off-level. If its under two inches, you may choose to install your pool without leveling the concrete surface.

If its more than 2 inches, then you may have to gather some leveling blocks like pressure-treated lumber, patio pavers, or concrete blocks. The leveling blocks youll be using depend on how off-level your Intex pool is.

If its just an inch or inch-and-a-half off-level, you may use interlocking foam tiles to level your Intex pool and also serve as an added protection for your pool liner.

Now, there is also the option for you to hire a professional to level the concrete in your home. Unfortunately, we cannot quote an exact price for this one since it highly depends on the total area you need to level and the costs of the needed materials in your area.

If you have the extra money, we consider hiring a professional the best solution to level your concrete for your Intex pool properly.

Should I Drain The Water

As we just discussed, you should drain the water at least halfway to make it easier for you to pry the walls up. Most of the time, it is not necessary to completely drain all the water out of your pool unless it is severely unlevel.

Severely unlevel pools need to be drained and completely taken down to relevel them.

Draining at least half of the water and repositioning your leveling blocks will protect your pool from wall and water level problems. However, if you have issues with your liner, you may want to consider completely draining the pool.

Pool liners with wrinkles or divots in them can rip or tear. You can try smoothing them out with your hands and feet in a half-drained pool. You can also consider using a clean plunger to plunge either side of the wrinkle until it is removed.

That said, most of the time, you need to drain your pool to at least 1 to 4 inches of water and then take your time to smooth out the liner. Make sure to pull it tight to either side of the pool. If you notice rocks or severe divots in the liner, you should consider taking your pool down and properly leveling the ground before putting it back up.

Put Blocks Under Your Intex Pool

To level your inflatable Intex pool, you may put blocks on the ground to have a level Intex pool. You may have to dig the ground first, so you can easily level the ground using the soil on it and either a concrete block or patio pavers.

For framed Intex pool that is unlevel, you may put a block of wood or concrete underneath the legs of your Intex pool to level it.

Patching A Pool Without Draining

Poles sinking into the ground leaning Coleman, Best way, Intex metal frame pool

If your pool has been uneven, it may develop a tear in the wall because of the additional pressure from the waters weight. Or, if you didnt winterize your above ground pool, that could be another reason it has developed a leak. Regardless of the cause, it might be possible to patch your pool without draining it, depending on where the leak has appeared.

Patches arent a permanent solution, although they sometimes last for years. There are no real rules about the size of a tear you can patch successfully, or how long the repair will last.

V Check For Local Safety Guidelines

For some towns or counties, an above ground swimming pool is considered safe because they are so high off the ground. With a safety ladder, above ground pools can be pretty safe for any small children wandering along the countryside unsupervised. Though, when you sink the pool that changes. If you dont have a fence around your yard or if wandering two-year-olds are a problem in your area, then consider this safety issue.

Honorable Mention

So many people ask me if an above ground pool will last as long when it is buried in the ground. Some feel that sinking one in the earth will make it rust out faster or something. It makes logical sense to think that is what will happen, but there is one thing that is more accurate than logical sense and thats long-term observation. In my 30 years of working on these pools, I have seen no evidence that placing them in the ground takes any life out of them. Of course there are instances where that can be true, but Im talking as a general rule. Now some disagree with me on this and thats OK. Its healthy to be wrong sometimes. Most of them havent observed above grounds apart from their own or maybe an uncles or neighbors or something.

Go ahead and install an above ground in the ground. You may enjoy it more as it wont be located so high up in your yard.

Are You Sure Thats Dirt

Dirt seems like a straightforward contaminant in your pool, but it could also be a more serious issue in disguise. Lets cover its lookalikes: sand and mustard algae.

Not sure if your dirt is straightforward dirt? Use a pool brush to move the pile of dirt around. If it quickly disperses into a cloud, its mustard algae. If it doesnt, its either dirt from the area around your pool or sand from your pool filter.

Risks When Intex Pool Is Unlevel

Here are some of the things that might happen if your Intex pool is unlevel.

Trouble with your pools walls. Unlevel Intex pools may have one part of the pool lower than other parts, and this unevenly distributes pressure on your pools walls. A part of your pool may have the highest weight due to it being on uneven ground. This will can cause your wall to collapse and leave permanent damage on your Intex pool. This applies to both framed pools and inflatable pool sets.

Damage to your pool liner. Another part of your Intex pool that can be damaged by it being unlevel is your pool liner. If your pool liner is on an uneven surface, it may have folds and wrinkles on it. These folds and wrinkles may get caught up when you clean your pool using your pool vacuum, and this may cause your liner to rip or tear apart. Even if Intex pools use strong and durable pool liners it is still suspect to damage if it is set on unlevel ground. If you need to, check out our article on how to patch an Intex pool.

Danger to small children. Having an unlevel Intex pool will cause a side of your pool to be higher than the other side. This is risky if you have small children who cannot reach the base of your Intex pool. Also, as mentioned earlier, there is a risk of collapse or tear of your pools interior, and you dont want that occurring when your kids are using your Intex pool.

For these reasons, we highly suggest you level the area first where youll set up your Intex pool set.

How Did Dirt Get There Anyway

Dirt, dust, sediment. Its all bound to end up in your pool at some point. So how did it get there, anyway?

Well, first look around at the landscaping in your backyard. How much dirt is around your pool, and how moist does your environment tend to be? And how much wind can you usually expect? The more the wind and the drier the dirt, the more likely it is to pick up and move right into your pool. Dirt can also work its way in on the feet or bodies of dirty swimmers, though that kind of dirt takes longer to accumulate. Unless your swimmers are coming from a mud run!

While larger debris like leaves get sucked up and caught in your skimmer basket, dirt is too tiny to be caught by any netted filters. Instead, it usually falls to the bottom of your pool, and doesnt get circulated through your pool system.

Thats why you might see dirt piling up in the bottom of your pool. But before we go through the process of getting rid of all that dirt, lets make sure its dirt in the first place.

Use A Leveling Device

To ensure that the ground is level, you can either use a long, straight board or a line level.

To use the board, place it on the ground, and then put a level on top of it to see how level the board actually is.

To use a string level, tie the string to a wooden stake and hammer it into the ground at the edge of where the pool should be. Then take the string across to the other side, pound another stake into the ground, and tie the string loosely to it, making sure there is no slack.

Place the line level on the string at the center of the area and adjust the height of the string on the stake until it is level.

The Hole Must Be Bigger Than The Size Of The Pool

This may sound like Im being captain obvious, but you might be surprised at the number of future pool owners who dont consider this. I guess they think I can assemble the pool somewhere else and just drop the pool in the same sized hole with a helicopter or something.

The pool has to be assembled in the hole. And that takes added room. When I build a pool on top of the ground, I level an area one foot bigger all the way around. As an example, if building a 24 round pool on top of the ground, I level a 26 circle.

If Im installing that same 24 round pool in the ground two feet down, Ill need that area to be a leveled 27 circle. I need that extra foot of space so I have room to build the pool.

As a general rule then, if you are burying a pool 2 deep in the ground, make the hole three feet bigger than the size of the pool. NOTE: For oval pools, keep in mind that you have to make extra space for the buttresses . Heres a chart for some common pool sizes:
