Determine Where Springtails Are Nesting

How to Get Rid of Springtails (4 Easy Steps)

There are two basic keys to locating springtail nesting sites. First, the nesting site will be somewhere damp and dark. Second, the nesting site is likely very close to the place of migration since springtails do not move very quickly and prefer not to travel far before settling into a suitable habitat.

Some possible nesting sites may include:

  • Under mulch and moist soil
  • Under patio slabs
  • In compost piles and other decaying matter
  • In flower pots
  • Under logs, pine straw, and wood chips
  • Under wood decks
  • Indoors in bath traps, under kitchen or bathroom sinks, and under linoleum
  • Around jacuzzies or hot tubs
  • In damp crawl spaces and wall voids
  • Under the sheathing, insulation, or sheet rock in the siding of your home if these places are prone to moisture.

SDor said:I also have a lot of springtails this year. I believe it is from all of the rain we’ve been having – seems like we have a storm almost every day – my lawn is still squishy wet, and it’s almost the 4th of July. My water is crystal clear, CYA is 30-40-ish, FC is 4.5. They use surface tension to float on the pool water so I don’t know that the chlorine is going to get them. It hasn’t so far. Some people suggest spraying the edges of the pool with soapy water, but others say soap + pool don’t mix. I would guess it has to do with concentrations. I’m just hoping it stops raining for a few days and maybe the problem will take care of itself.

How To Keep Springtails Away

To keep springtails away, you will need to keep your home dry year-round. This means ensuring your windows and door seals are airtight and that you run some kind of quality dehumidifier if you live in a humid climate.

Always remove wet debris from around your home, such as fallen leaves and wet towels, and seal any small cracks that may appear in the wood or brick.

Can Springtails Survive In Water

Springtails in South Africa

If it is dry outside, springtails may seek moisture indoors in bathrooms, basements or kitchens. Large numbers of springtails may be found floating in swimming pools, but only because they accidentally jump into the pool while seeking food. They cannot tolerate chlorinated water for long, so those in a pool will drown.

Can Springtails Survive In The Winter ^

They most certainly can survive in the winter. In fact springtails can withstand extremely cold temperatures and are known to emerge any time of the year. In fact, its not uncommon to find them active in the middle of the winter. On any warm sunny day during the winter, populations thriving alongside a warm foundation wall will readily migrate up and into wall spaces, door frames or in some cases, out over the top of cold snow.

Of course these migrating springtails will die if they dont get back down in the soil but seeing them during the winter is a sure sign of a problem that needs to be treated and not ignored.

Will Chlorine Kill Springtails

Chlorine doesnt kill them. I put chlorine in a bucket and threw in some springtails and they bounced around. I had another bucket with a few drops of mineral oil and they died instantly. I have a spray bottle with soapy water that I spray around the landscaping hoping that itll at least slow them down a little.

Why Are Springtails My House

Occasionally, these little critters find their way inside our homes. This is a big no-no!

They will be found, as you know, in the following areas:

  • basements
  • damp walls
  • around window moldings

They especially concentrate near drains, leaking water pipes, sinks, and in the soil of over-watered house plants. They usually appear in the spring and early summer but can be found all year round.

Spray Inside The Home With Fs Mp And Bithor ^

Around windows and entry points above ground, use FS MP AEROSOL. This product is quick killing and repellent so it will stop them from entering where applied. This should be used above ground, around window frames and be sure to open and spray the window sill and outside around the window as well. These are all key entry points and spots where springtails like to nest.

Treat these entry points thoroughly both inside and outside if possible. Do this as needed meaning if you spray on a Saturday and notice new ones in two days, spray again. Eventually you will force them to forage elsewhere or youll get ahead of the cycle as the outside spray and granules have some time to do their job.

FS MP is strong and does a great job of deterring the invasion. But again, if youre not treating the baseboards inside and the ground surrounding the home, the problem will just continue so the FS MP is not a cure all, its more of a way to manage the invasion.

For the baseboards, mix up 1 oz of BITHOR per gallon of water and plan on spraying all baseboards once a week. Bithor will kill quickly using one active but the second active is non repelling and will last several weeks. During this time, unsuspecting springtails will forage over it, pick up a lethal dose and die.

Best Home Remedies For Springtails

When it comes to a home remedy, we recommend you use white vinegar. It repels the bugs and kills them when they make contact with it.

White vinegar is considered a natural bug killer, though in some cases, you will need to dilute it before use. Be sure to read the label and use it in a well-ventilated area. If the site has no windows, wear a mask and place fans in the room.

Backswimmers Vs Water Boatman

How To Get Rid Of Springtail Bugs In Pool ...

In this section, well give you the differences between backswimmers and water boatman.

Given their shape and color, people consider both water boatman and backswimmers as water beetles. In fact, water beetle is a generalized name given to any beetle-shaped bug that floats on the water surface.

Also, lack of clarity in the differences between water boatman and backswimmers has caused many people to get into the pool only to get painful bites from backswimmers.

Unfortunately, backswimmers are more common in pools than water boatman.

Its because a pool with algae and other types of swimming pool bugs attracts more backswimmers than water boatman.

Physically, both backswimmers and water boatman look similar.

Both are oval-shaped with long hind legs that they use row on the surface of the water.

Water Boatman Close Up

The significant differences lie in the color of these bugs.

Backswimmers have streaks of brown, black, red, white, and yellow on their back. In contrast, water boatman are brown with patches of black lines that give them a rough appearance.

The front legs of backswimmers are small and look like the legs of an average bug.

But the water boatmans front legs have a slightly shovel-shaped ending. They use it to scoop out the algae and shove it in its mouth.

Youd also notice a beak on the head of the backswimmer .

The beak lets them hunt and bites its prey.

Theres also a significant difference in where you can find them.

Use Shock Chlorination To Clean Organic Matter In Your Pool

Pool Chlorine Tablets

Organic matter like algae attracts springtails and water boatman, which in turn attracts the backswimmers.

So, the second step is to remove the organic matter in your pool.

To do that, youll have to use chlorine tablets.

The question is, how much chlorine you need to add to your swimming pool?

The safety standards say that chlorine content in the swimming pool should be between 1 PPM and 3 PPM.

PPM is an abbreviation of parts per million, and scientifically its expressed as mg/L or milligrams per liter.

Shock chlorination means you use a more significant chlorine dose in your pool to kill the organic matter.

After that, you need to wait for the chlorine level to subside to safe levels. In other words, youd need to wait to let alkaline or pH levels get back to normal.

To do shock chlorination, youd need to increase the chlorine levels in your pool to 5 PPM to 7 PMM.

The question is, how much chlorine you need to add to your swimming pool?

To raise the chlorine level by 1 PPM, youd need 0.00013 ounces of chlorine per gallon of water.

To increase the chlorine level from 5 PPM to 7 PPM, add 0.00065 ounces to 0.001 ounces of chlorine per gallon of water.

After 48 to 50 hours, the chlorine level in your pool will fall from 1 PPM to 3 PPM.

Few Words Of Caution Dont get inside the pool before the chlorine level reaches a safe level. Its important that the water chemistry of your pool or the alkalinity levels is safe before you use the pool.

Springtails In Aquarium + How To Get Rid Of Them

Tiny jumpy bugs on top of an aquariums water surface are known as springtails. They may have a brown, black, or off-white appearance depending on the lights around the tank. Stagnant water in an aquarium evaporates constantly thus making its surrounding humid and moist. This is what attracts springtails since they cannot survive without moisture.

Get rid of springtails in your aquarium by doing a 20% water change once after every two weeks. Introduce algae eating fish and keep the lights off at night to manage algae that springtails feed on. Then scrape off any mold in the aquarium and stop overfeeding the fish since springtails can also eat decaying food attached to the tanks edge.

Naturally, springtails are not poisonous to fish. However, if your fish swim up to eat springtails on the water surface that have taken too much mold from a dirty aquarium, they may die after some time depending on the amount consumed.

Treat The Yard And Septic Tanks For Springtails ^

If you have a septic tank in the yard or suspect there is a cracked drain line leading to the city sewer, youll want to treat the dirt above and around the septic tanks and/or pipes out in the yard.

In some cases this will be easy. Septic tanks will many times have covers or caps that can be lifted. Gaining access to these areas will enable you to direct the treatment right where it matters.

Give the exposed soil, rocks and void a good spray down with MAXXTHOR EC monthly to keep springtails and other pests in check. By killing them here they wont be able to follow your drain lines up and into the home when they migrate.

Follow the directions detailed above 1 oz in our 20 GALLON HOSE END SPRAYER is enough to get 5,000 sq/ft treated.

If your septic tank system is covered in dirt, youll need to use a less direct treatment method. Do this by applying MAXXTHOR SG applied over the top. Once in place, the granules will slowly release active down in the soil and eventually penetrating deep enough where it can adversely affect the reproducing springtails.

Apply 2 lbs of granules for every 1,000 sq/ft of turf.

    Springtail Foaming Tool ^

Foam 1 gallon of mixed mater for every 10 feet of cement using a FOAMING TOOL. These applicators convert water mixtures into a thick foam so when you treat under a slab, the foam carries the Maxxthor up onto the bottom side of the slab. Youll need to add some FOAMING AGENT to the tank mix so the foam is good and thick but for homes with springtail infestations, this is usually the only treatment that will stop them from nesting under the home. Springtails commonly nest on the bottom side of the slab surface and if the dirt under the slab has settled, treating with just a liquid wont fill the gap and carry the active up to the slabs bottom where its most needed.

Add 1 oz of Foaming Agent to each gallon of mixed solution.

lightSpringtails are attracted to light and are so small that they can enter houses through cracks and crevices such as around doors, utility pipes, or window screens. How To Control Springtails ^

How To Get Rid of Water Bugs in Pools

Springtail problems can take years to develop. In fact they exist in all climates and will readily thrive in the hot southern states or up north where it gets cold and stays cold for 5-6 months a year. Springtails are very much a part of nature and as such fundamental to the recycling of all things organic. Much like termites are natural recyclers of wood springtails are natural recyclers of plant life.

And even though moisture is related to their survival, its important to understand reducing moisture will not eliminate the problem. Reduced moisture will reduce their numbers. And in living spaces, any house using air conditioning will have an environment tough for springtails to use. But if it takes 5-7 days for them to die after they migrate inside and they keep migrating inside daily, theyll be replacing the dead ones faster then theyre dyingwhich means the amount you see will look like its getting worse with every passing day.
