How To Install An Above Ground Pool In 10 Steps

We have installed over 5,000 above ground pools over the years and we usually hear a few clients ask if they could do it themselves. The short answer to that is yes.

But, you do need the right equipement and the right instructions.

The manufacturers of the above grounds like Aqualeader and Zodiac do a great job at manufacturing them. But it would be a stretch to say that every model comes with instructions on how to assemble .

Our goal here is to give you a 10-step overview on how to install an above ground pool yourself.

Now before you get started on reading the steps, know that this is one of the ways to instal. Every builder adds their own style.

How To Disassemble A Round Above Ground Swimming Pool

With the start of the summer season, people start spending time in the water. When they have personal swimming pools, then things get a lot more exciting. Swimming pools are available in different shapes and sizes, but when it comes to the most common one, then it is surely the round above ground swimming pool that takes the top spot.

With a high level of versatility, round above ground swimming pools are the number one choice among the people. There are various reasons behind the popularity of round above ground swimming pools, like they are easy to remove, move and store when not in use. But, the process of disassembling the swimming pool could be a bit of a challenge. The right approach of taking down the round above ground pool is, starting off the disassembling in the opposite order. If you havent put the swimming pool together, then it wont be much difficult for you to take down the pool.

Overlap Above Ground Pool Liner Replacement

If you need to change the liner in your above ground pool and you have determined that it is an overlap style then this guide will be for you. If you have an S-bead or J-bead liner this above ground swimming pool overlap liner replacement guide may give you an idea of what you need to do but an overlap liner does install a bit differently.

The first thing you will need to do is to get all the tools and the new liner ready. You will need a small shop vacuum, razor knife, a small rake, a cordless drill with a screwdriver bit and a pump or hose to drain down the pool. After you have gather those tools you will want to put the pump into the pool and remove all the water.

Once all the water has been drained from the above ground swimming pool you will now want to get inside the swimming pool and you will want to use a razor knife to cut the liner out of the pool. You will also want to cut the liner into small pieces as well because if you dont the one large piece of liner might be to heavy for you to carry.

After you have removed the old liner from the pool you will want to now start removing the corner caps and the top railings from the pool with your cordless drill. Once you have removed the caps and the railings you will want to remove the top rial of the pool that is holding the liner lock into place.

Find Space For Your Pool And Start Clearing

Your first step is decide where you want to install your swimming pool. We highly advise you do this first exercise before chosing your pool size. Insert a steel rod where you want the center of your pool to be. By taking the pool size and dividing by two, you can use use a measuring tape from the center rod and make a circle. Take a rope or an extension cable and lay it down to visually see where the pool will end up.

Make sure there are no obstructions in that area. Also determine where your pool equipement will be. It is recommended that your equipement stays within 4 feet of the wall . This puts less pressure on your pump. We have many clients that request to have the equipement set much further away. Just remember that aboveground pool pumps are gravity fed. This means it must be lower than the hole where the skimming water output is.

Once you know and you have marked where the pool and the equipement will be, it’s time to get your hands dirty.

If you are on grass, then use a sod cutter . Remove the sod in all the areas your identified where the pool will go. Start with cutting 1 extra foot around the pool. Do the whole circle around to start, and then make lines across the center, and remove everything inside.

Pro Tip: If you cut the sod in long streeks, you can roll them up and use them later around the pool area to create a smooth elevation around the areas you had to dig.

Skimmer Or Return Hoses

You may have already realized that you could remove the hose from the pool filter and drain water right next to the pool. This will work, however, only down to the level of the return.

Its always best to drain or pump out an Intex pool slowly. With the Easy Set pools, you may be tempted to deflate the top ring and just sort of roll the water out. This can be dangerous, not just to nearby plants or mulch beds, but to the pool, which can rip or develop holes during the process.

Water Care & General Maintenance

You will want to test your water at least weekly. There are a variety of different test kits available. They include strips that you simply dunk in the water to get your water readings, drop kits, and even completely automated systems that will continuously monitor your water and alert you if anything needs to be added. Some pool retailers will have a water lab that can test your water for you as well.

You will want to watch the following 3 readings weekly: pH, alkalinity and chlorine. For a chlorine-based pool, you’ll want to maintain your pH reading between 7.2 and 7.8, your alkalinity between 80 120 and your chlorine level at 1.5 3. These levels will ensure proper sanitization of your water and should keep it clear and clean.

On a monthly basis, you will want to test copper , water hardness and cyanuric acid levels, and ensure these are within the appropriate range.

The most common water issues with above ground pools are green water and/or cloudy water.

Green pool water indicates algae, and generally requires the water to be shocked with a high dose of sanitizer .

Cloudy water can be caused by many factors commonly we see it after shocking a pool. The dead algae that is not caught by the filter tends to hang out in the water. In these cases, you will want to floc the pool. This process causes the algae or other contaminants that are in suspension in the pool water to sink to the bottom, allowing you the ability to vacuum them out.

Above Ground Pool Ladder Price

The final component common to an above ground pool kit is the ladder or entry system. You will find an A-frame ladder will be the go to choice for most retailers. These are very cost effective and work great on above ground pools. If you would like something a bit more substantial, you can generally upgrade to an entry system, which will include steps that go down on the inside of the pool and additionally handrails to assist with entry and exit from the pool. If you plan to install a wood deck around your pool, there are also deck mount options for the ladders that allow for a seamless transition from the deckto the ladder or entry system.

Closing An Above Ground Pool For The Winter

A Glendale, Missouri home had an inground gunnite pool installed in 1964 . When Mosby Building Arts clients bought the house over 20 years ago, the family was thrilled to have a pool. It brought countless hours of fun and maintenance.

With the children grown and moved, the pool was used less often and became a huge maintenance issue that was facing upwards of $30,000 in repairs. Longing for a lower-maintenance backyard, it was time to remove the pool, replace the railroad tie retaining wall, and install a new paver patio.

There is a quick way to fill in a pool. There are plenty of Youtube videos showing a one-day job from demolition to newly level yard. What those videos dont show is months or years later when the ground begins to settle, or sink holes appear, or improper water drainage creates a swamp.

There is a proper way to remove and fill an inground pool to avoid future headache, damage and expense. The following photos show the steps.

The Mosby construction crew began, with a bobcat, breaking up the surrounding concrete deck , and poking holes in the walls and floor of the gunnite pool. This is so collected water from the surface and underground moisture can flow freely and drain properly.

The gunnite and concrete debris is pushed into the pool to help fill the hole . This reduces the amount of gravel and soil filler needed, and reduces the expense of hauling off debris. Its smart to recycle these materials.

Testing Your Sand Bottom

The weight of the water in the pool will help to compact the sand bottom underneath the liner. Generally it takes 5-10 days for the sand to be fully compacted and become hardened.

The first time you get in the pool to swim, gently feel the bottom of the pool to ensure the sand is sufficiently compacted. If the bottom is still soft, give it a few more days before walking around on the bottom.

***Country Leisure Pro Tip: Leaving footprints in the bottom of the pool will make it extremely difficult to vacuum your pool dont rush this step!

Clear And Store Lines

Water trapped in your pool lines can damage the lines by ice expansion. Even if winters are mild in your area, clearing, removing, and storing the lines will make for easier setup next spring. Simply disconnect the lines, allow all the water to run out, let them air dry, then store them in a dry place out of direct sunlight. HINT: Letting them dry is crucial to prevent mold in them in the Spring.

Build Stone Dust Base

Once you have a clean surface that is mostly level, you can start to bring in stone dust.

Lay down at least 2 inches of the stone around where the pool wall will sit. Be sure to read the specification of your pool make and model, since every manufacturer has slight differences.

Pro Tip: If you wanted to build up your pool, you can increase the thinkness of the stone dust in the lower areas. But don’t go over 8 inches.

The Circle should be at least 1 foot wide, with the exact circomference of the pool being in the center.

Your first round of leveling should be within 1/4 inch . We have this tool we use on the crew at Campbell Pools which allows us to set it down on the base and with the transit, we look at the measurements on the tool. You can do the same with a ruler, but it will be pretty low.

Using a rake, make sure your level everything around the base, ensuring that the area where the wall will sit is the most accurate.

When you are within 1/4 inch all around, bring in the compacter. Do use a garden hose to lightly spray the stone dust to prevent dust and to improve the effects of compacting.

But it doesn’t stop there, that was round one.

Now that everything is compacted, you need to measure again. Go around the pool and this time, bring everything within 1/8 inch . and you measure absolutely every area where the wall will sit. This will ensure your pool will be level and stable.

Winterizing The Pools External Equipment

Its now time to winterize your pools external components. Regardless of the pieces of equipment, the same logic applies clean, drain, dry and store.

***IMPORTANT: When you unscrew a hose, make sure to retrieve the o-rings at the end of it. Place all the o-rings inside in a resealable plastic bag.

1. Filter

• Unscrew the water inlet and outlet lines.

• Clean and set them aside with the other hoses.

• Unscrew the drain cap at the bottom of the filter.

• Unscrew the pressure gauge and sight glass.

• Store them in the skimmers basket, along with the drain cap.

• Place the filter handle in the WINTERIZE position. ***If your filter does not have this setting, simply position the lever between two positions.

• Cover the filter head with a plastic bag to protect it.

2. Pump

• Turn off the breaker and disconnect the device.

• Unscrew the lid and empty the basket.

• Unscrew the drain caps underneath the pump. Make sure you let all the water drain out.

• Clean and dry the pump.

• Sore the caps and other parts in the skimmers basket.

• Store everything in a dry, frost-free place.

3. Heat pump

Is your pool equipped with a heat pump?

During winter, check for snow accumulation and clear if necessary.

4. Chlorinator or nature2 vision

If you have a chlorinator or a Nature2 system:
