Solar Pool Heater Pros And Cons

How to Select an Inground Pool Heater

Now that you know how much a solar pool heater might cost, lets dive into some of the pros and cons of going with this type of pool heater.

Pros of solar pool heaters:

  • Environmentally friendly
  • Long lifespan
  • Can extend swim season by several weeks
  • May be eligible for a solar tax credit

Solar panels largely operate on free heat and energy from the sun, which makes them more environmentally friendly and less expensive to run than other types of pool heaters.

A well-maintained solar pool heater system can last several decades if properly cared for and. These systems can potentially extend your swim season by at least a few weeks in the spring and fall.

Installing a solar heating system may make you eligible for solar tax credits. The laws around solar tax credits change rather often, so make sure to check state and local laws and energy regulations, and contact your local building authorities if necessary, to determine whether or not you’re eligible for a tax credit — and if so, how much you can get.

Cons of solar pool heaters:

  • Expensive to install
  • Uses a large area of your pool’s surface to operate

Solar pool heaters tend to not come cheaply. Even with a tax credit, youll still be paying thousands of dollars, especially with professional installation.

If your roof needs work or you decide to mount your heating system on the ground, the installation timeline can be extended by several days or even weeks.

Heat Your Pool With The Power Of The Sun

Solar pool heaters: If youre looking for some extra warmth without the added cost of natural gas or propane, a solar heating system may be right for you. To determine whether this heating method will be effective for your pool, check your pool against these three best practices.

1. Works best with panels facing a southerly direction.

2. The area you intend to lay the panels should have unobstructed sun for at least six hours per day.

3. Needs an area at least half the size of your pools surface area, located close to your pump.

What Is The Most Efficient Setup For Heating A Pool And Spa

As per the reasoning above, I believe the best way of setting up the clients pool/spa combo is:

A single set of pool equipment

  • Valving to isolate the pool or the spa, etc.
  • Solar heating to heat the pool/spa
  • An on demand gas heating system to heat the spa

I also believe the following system will work:

  • A single set of pool equipment
  • Valving to isolate the pool or the spa, etc.
  • Heat pump to heat the pool/spa
  • An on demand gas heating system to heat the spa

Good luck with your decision.

PSNearly every pool builder I know tried using heat pumps about 7 10 years ago when the technology became widely available. As a result, most pool builders wont fit them due to lack of performance, contrasting the promises from sales brochures and representatives. I will fit and supply whatever the client chooses to use. I just wont warranty the performance of the units.

PPSIts been a long time since I had to work through calculations . Although I believe my theory is right and the compilation of the numbers correct, some measurements may be little out. These numbers are indicative only.

  • Heating Your Pool With Solar Panels

Solar panels convert sunlight into energy. They are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly way of heating a pool. They can also be combined with an electric heating system to add warmth to your pool.

If you are wondering how to quickly heat a pool, solar panels are your best option. Combine them with your electric heating system for rapid results.

What Is The Best Way Of Heating A Pool And Spa

The average pool/spa combo designed so that they can both be run through one set of pool equipment. There are a variety of ways of setting this up for heating a pool and spa.

You can use one set of pool equipment to run both the pool and spa. Valving is used to distribute the water and isolate the pool or the spa as required . Commercial pools and spas use designated equipment to run either the pool or spa. This means there is twice the amount of equipment required a considerable added expense. Also, commercial spas have onerous water testing and sanitation requirements because they are permanently heated. Domestic pools do not have to be heated on demand like this. Public spas are permanently heated to 36°C and therefore require the water to be tested every 3 hrs. The heat causes them to become literal petri dish of organic compounds !

Now Which Color Solar Cover Is Best

Clear solar covers allow more of the suns heat to penetrate the water and increase water temperature by about 15 degrees and prevent up to 95% of pool water and chemical evaporation. Dark blue solar covers are great for heat retention. So if you have a gas heater or pool heat pump, your heater wont need to run as long with a dark blue cover.

If you have a large pool, or if you often swim, removing the solar blanket can be a little bit annoying. You can cut the solar blanket into smaller panels and remove the pieces one at a time.

Or it might be worth investing in a solar cover reel.

How Do You Best Maintain A Pool Heater

To maintain a gas pool heater, you should check the burner inputs for debris. Keep them clear of leaves, cobwebs, and accumulated dirt. If you have a propane pool heater, routinely check the tank gauge to ensure that you have enough propane for operation. For both propane and gas pool heaters, check the fuel lines for leaks. To do so, mix up some dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Apply the mixture to joints in the fuel line. If bubbles appear, you likely have a leak and repairs should be made right away.

For electric pool heaters, turn off the power supply and open the cabinet to safely remove the elements inside. Scrub any debris or corrosion with a wire brush to ensure optimal operation.

With any type of pool heater, you should read the owners manual and take special note of any maintenance instructions specific to your system. Follow the steps for routine maintenance to ensure a long life of service from your pool heater.

Whats the Best Way to Heat My South Florida Pool in Winter?

Pool water passes through your heater while a combustion chamber burns and warms the water before returning it to the pool.

Gas heaters are probably the most powerful heater option. Theyre very efficient and will heat your pool quickly, especially if you live where temperatures are cooler.

However, it is not a cheap system to install. And you do have to pay for the gas to keep it running. Not to mention the maintenance and troubleshooting it requires.

The installation cost can be between $500 to $1500, depending on the situation. If you want to do some work yourself, it could potentially save you hundreds or thousands in costs. And running it will cost around $200 $400 a month.

Reducing Pool Evaporation Saves Energy & Money:

Evaporation is by far the largest source of energy loss from a pool. Evaporating water requires tremendous amounts of energy. It only takes 1 Btu to raise 1 pound of water 1 degree, but each pound of 80ºF water that evaporates takes a whopping 1,048 Btu of heat out of the pool. This diagram shows outdoor pool energy loss percentages:

In any backyard pool across the USA in a climate zone with 4 seasons, there’s a 70% energy loss from evaporation, 20% from radiation to sky, and 10% to ground and other. Heat loss of any pool, heated by any means, is primarily driven by evaporation from the surface of the pool. Upwards of 70% of heat loss is through evaporation. Controlling the evaporative loss is therefore a key factor in reducing heating cost and there are several methods of achieving these savings, some more Eco-friendly than others.

Many who have considered or used both of the above described blankets also consider them to be unsightly, difficult and/or expensive to use – and as we said, surrounding ourselves with vinyl is not a great choice of material so polyethylene may be a better choice . The last type of blanket available on the market is the Liquid blanket, so we should look at that.

Youll also have to consider the collector orientation, which has a large impact on the panels efficiency. As a general rule, solar pool heaters should be oriented in a way that maximizes the amount of daily sunlight towards it. According to recent studies, a collector can face up to 45 degrees either east or west of true south, without creating notable negative impacts. Be aware, though, that local landscape features and weather conditions may affect the appropriate orientation for the collector.

How To Heat Your POOL (3 Ways) | Swim University

For this section, were going to tell you how you can efficiently heat your inground pool to better reduce your pool heating expenses.

Inground pools tend to have more water to heat than above ground pools, so they will need heaters with more BTUs. And most of these heaters are known to be expensive to set up and operate.

Of course, the cost can still be affected by your pool usage, your heating preference, the pools current location, and your chosen heating systems efficiency.

How Long Does It Take To Heat An Average

Many residential swimming pools hold between 10,000 and 20,000 gallons of water. How long it takes to heat this water will depend on a variety of factors, including how many degrees you want to raise the water temperature, the average ambient air temperature outside of the pool, whether youre heating an inground or above ground pool, and what type of pool heater you choose to do the job.

However, when you choose the right pool heater for the type and size of your swimming pool, you can often expect to hit target temperatures within 24 hours or less. Its not uncommon for a gas pool heater to be able to raise temperatures by 5 degrees or more in less than 12 hours.
