Is Leakage Greater When The Pump Is Off
While the pump is running, leaks in pipes, fittings or valves on the suction side of the system before the pump usually draw air in rather than leak water out. When the pump cycles off, however, water leakage may occur through these openings. Air locks in the pump that require frequent manual priming, bubbles emitted from the return jets in the pool and high-pressure readings in the filter that are relieved by opening the bleed valve are all signs that a leak somewhere before the pump is sucking air in while the pump is energized and probably leaking water out when the pump stops.
Use Pool Leak Detection Dye To Pinpoint The Leak
Go to the area where you think the leak might be. Move slowly and try not to disturb the water.
Squirt the dye in the water close to the wall. If the leak is near, you will see the dye move towards the leak source like a current.
If you suspect your leak is at the bottom of your pool, put on those goggles and do the same thing. The reason you dont want to disturb the water is because you dont want the dye running wild.

Repairing Underground Pool Pipe Leaks With Pipefuze
Your leak detection has indicated that there is a leak in a pipe that runs under your patio. This isnt uncommon. If the pipe meets the criteria for sealing with a 2-part coagulant, you can get to repairing underground pool pipe leaks with PipeFuze. First, lets see what the leak is all about.

Fixing The Skimmer Leak
You can easily repair cracks in your skimmer body by using an underwater epoxy mix known as Pool Putty. You may use this on the front three sides of the skimmer, where it meets the concrete pool to fill in the gaps and cracks.
When using Pool Putty, you need to chip out all the loose or cracked material, mix equal parts of resin and hardener with pool water, then roll it into a snake. Push the putty in place and thats it. You may also pack in new plaster at the interface of your skimmer and concrete pool wall to seal up the area again. Ideally, plaster mix is very easy to work with because all you need to do is add and stir it to a spreadable consistency and apply it to the area with a putty knife.

Pool leaks in the equipment pad are common and easy to find because they usually leave behind drips or puddles of water. Pool leaks in skimmer boxes and drain sumps are also common and can be determined by performing a dye test. You can use the phenol red pH indicator reagent from your pool test kit as the dye for this process.

How To Find Leak In In

Occasionally, a leak occurs at the pipe connector under the pool deck or beneath the skimmer, but repair rarely requires a backhoe. It pays for a pool owner to know how to find a leak in the in-ground pool piping.

How To Conduct The Bucket Test
If you conduct the bucket test and the water lost in your pool always matches the water lost in the bucket, then you can conclude that your pool does not have any leak and that your pool water loss is just a result of evaporation. If you use a solar blanket at night to cover your pool, expect your pool water to dramatically decrease due to water evaporation.
Note:
When you conduct the bucket test, it is best to record the weather patterns during that particular time period. These patterns include the outside temperature during the day and during the night, as well as the cloud cover and the amount of wind that you have. You also need to note if it rained or not, as rain may invalidate your bucket test results.
How To Pressure Test Pool Lines

Many of you have emailed me, asking about the follow-up piece and here it is 5 years later sorry for the wait! Essentially, you screw the pressure stick into the skimmer, with Teflon tape. Then connect a garden hose to it, also with Teflon tape on the male threads. Your pressure testing stick should be made with a 1.5 inch threaded male fitting on the end. If your skimmer has two inch ports, add a 2in. X 1.5in. threaded reducer to the skimmer, again with Teflon tape to prevent any pressure loss.
Then plug the pool returns, other skimmers, and the main drain, whatever pool pipes you want to test. You can use winter expansion plugs or use threaded plugs with o-rings, like the SP1022C or 195829 for 2 inch threaded pipes. You dont have to plug them all at the same time, because you will be testing each line individually. There are specialty test plugs that have straight side walls, not tapered like winter plugs, which hold better under high pressure. However, in most cases, these expensive test plugs are not needed, and winter plugs will hold 10-20 psi of pressure, as long as you tighten the wing nut very tightly. If you have problems, use the threaded plugs mentioned above.
If you are just testing the suction side , dead-head a valve at the pump . If you dont have a 3-way valve in front of the pump, you can open the pump lid and put a plug firmly into the incoming pipe.

However, if the pool water level has decreased more than the bucket water level, you probably have a leak.

Is My Pool Leaking Use The Bucket Test
Loss of pool water is normal, but if your water bill has gone up, your pool might have a leak. Normal water loss includes splash-out and evaporation, which varies with water temperature, humidity, wind and barometric pressure. But, do you add water on a continuous basis? If you have autofill, has your water bill increased? If so, you can test to see if your pool has a leak in three steps:
- Determine if your pool is leaking.
- Calculate the amount of water loss.
- Identify the likely culprit.

The easiest method to test for a pool leak is the Bucket Test. Get a 5-gallon bucket and follow these directions, preferably on a day without rain:
