Pump Is Shutting Off By Itself
Not a good sign usually. If it turns back on after 15 minutes, it likely has been overheating. Provide shade if necessary, and make sure that air is circulating freely under all parts of the motor, and that the motor vents are open. Rake around the area to remove any leaves or mulch, and trim back overgrown bushes and overgrown trees that may block cooling breezes.
Other causes of a pump shutting itself off include loose or broken wires or incorrect voltage, more than 10% more or less of the rated input voltage. In most cases however, a motor that is over-heating tends to be defective beyond repair, when caused by an internal short across the motor windings.

What To Do If Your Pool Pump Is Too Low
If your new pump is too low, then theres a quick fix for that. Simply cut the incoming vertical pipes for the skimmers and the drains and attach some couplings to raise the manifold about an inch or two and you should be good to go. Another way to go about this is to use two 45-degree elbows on the horizontal pipe to raise it up by two to three inches. Whichever way you go about it, just make sure that its sealed properly with some silicone sealant and PVC glue.

Pump Is Not Pumping Water
If the pump is not pumping water at all, check that all suction and return valves are open, and the pump lid is on tight, with the lid o-ring in place. Lubricating the lid o-ring regularly will help improve the seal. Check that the drain plugs are tightly inserted with Teflon tape, and that the pump basket is inserted in the proper way, and is sitting all the way down.
If the pump has lost prime completely, fill a bucket with water or bring over a garden hose and re-prime the pump manually by filling up the pump. If the pump wont catch after a several attempts to fill with water, check for an air leak on the suction side of the pump, an obstruction in the line, or low water level.
If you just pulled the pump to check the impeller or replaced a shaft seal, make sure the seal is installed correctly and that the diffuser and diffuser gaskets are seated firmly.
If the pump wont pump water fully, check that:
- Suction side valves are open.
- Older suction side valves can leak air through stem or lid.
- Pump lid o-ring is a good fit, in good condition, and lubricated.
- Pump lid cover is Tight .
- Impeller is not clogged with small debris.
- Check that pump basket is not broken or misaligned.

Removing The Old Pool Pump
Important Note: Were going to start tinkering with the pump now so turn of the mains that lead to your pool system to eliminate the risk of shock.
If your pump is hard-plumbed into the system cut the pipes coming in and out of the pump. Be sure to leave a couple of inches to attach unions for future use.
Once the plumbing has been removed, its now time to remove the wiring. Double check if the mains are off, we cant stress that enough.
Remove the rear cover plate. Once this has been removed, you should see three wires connected to the pump motor. Gently loosen the wires from their fittings with a flathead screwdriver to disconnect them from the pump. Once this has been done, look for the conduit fitting, this looks like a steel elbow fitting that brings the wires into the motor, locate the nut that holds the conduit in place and loosen/remove it. Once this has been fully loosened or removed, gently pull out the conduit and the wires should be free of the pump.

Installing The New Pool Pump
After youve removed the old pump, position the new pump in place but dont attach anything yet. Align all of the pipes and the couplings first, adjust the height and everything but dont do the plumbing first. The first thing you should do is to reattach the wiring. The reason for this is you may need to move the pump around to get easier access to the electrical parts and you cant do this if your pump is already attached to the pipes!
Attach the conduit from the old pump into the threaded port of the new pump and refer to the wiring diagram on how to attach the wires properly. If its not on the pumps body, then refer to your owners manual. Once the wires have been attached and the pump closed up, its now to proceed with the plumbing.
How Do You Hook Up Hoses To A Pool Pump And Filter
To hook up hoses to a pool pump and filter, attach the other end of the hose from the skimmer pipe to the pump, connect the opposite end of the return hose to the pool filter valve, and attach another hose to connect the pool pump and filter together. Hose clamps and water pump pliers are necessary to complete this project.
Connect a single pump hose to the skimmer pipe located below the skimmer basket. Lock down the hose that is over the pipe with a hose clamp. Attach the opposite end of the hose to the pump. Connect the return hose to the pools fitting pipe, and clamp it down. Connect the other end of the return hose to the return valve of the pool filter. Make a tight seal with the hose clamp.
Use another hose to make the connection between the pump and pool filter, and use water pump pliers to secure the connection. Use hose clamps to seal the pipes and hoses.
Prime the pump, and prepare the filter by using a filtering conduit, such as sand. Plug in the pool pump and filter. The pump and filter should be working.
Inspect all of the hoses and connections, and tighten the clamps if necessary. Listen for smooth sounds coming from the pool pump and filter.

Reinstall Skimmer Baskets And Return Jets
Its almost time to start up your pool. Before you flip the switch, you’ll want to remove the ice compensators from the skimmer put your skimmer baskets back and screw in the return jet eyeball fittings that direct water into your pool.
At this point, you should also check your water level. If its not at its normal level, add water to your pool.
Reattach And Reinstall All Pool Equipment And Accessories
Depending on the type of equipment you use for your pool, you may have to take it out of storage and reattach it. While some people leave pool items in the same place all year round, others prefer to put them away during the wintertime to avoid exposing it to the elements.
Regardless of your approach, always make sure your pool pump and pool filter are secured in place. You’ll also want to remove any winterizing plugs that were installed during your pool closing. Make sure all of your equipment is ready to get back to work.
After reattaching your pool equipment, you should reinstall your deck equipment. Everything from the ladder to the diving board.
TIP: You should also lubricate any nuts and bolts that exist on these pieces of equipment so that they don’t rust on you throughout use.

Pump Trips The Breaker
When the breaker trips when trying to turn on the pump, most likely the motor shaft is frozen, the impeller is stuck, or the capacitor has blown. In some cases, it can be a bad breaker, especially one that is used often to turn the pump on and off.
If the breaker trips while the pump is running, the pump is likely drawing more amperage or voltage than the breaker rating. This could be caused by incorrect voltage or from clogged or restricted pipes, valves or impeller. It could also be just a bad breaker.
If the breaker trips when turning on pump, check:
- Look for wire problems in back of motor crimped, split, touching.
- Check the motor shaft, the impeller should turn freely by hand.
- Shut off power at breaker and tighten all wire connections.
- Check timer clock or switch for burnt terminals or wires.
- Check capacitor for capacitance or resistance with an Ohm meter.
- If breaker still trips, replace the breaker they go bad eventually.
Pump Flow Rate Is Low
When the filter pressure is high, the filter is dirty ~ and when the filter pressure is low, the basket are dirty. Lower than normal pressure on the filter corresponds with lower than normal flow rates.
Check the pump impeller by removing the pump basket and reaching through the hole to feel for any debris or rocks stuck inside the impeller. If you feel anything unusual, remove the bolts to pull the motor out for a good cleaning of the impeller.
An air leak will also reduce water flow rates, as air is drawn in to the pump, and a dirty pool filter or baskets can clog up the works, and reduce the flow rate. In some cases, it can be a clog in the skimmer line, or even a partially collapsed suction line that is to blame.

Treat The Water Properly
Start by checking your pH, alkalinity and calcium levels so that you know how to move forward with balancing your pool water.
Once properly balanced, you’ll want to shock your pool with a quality shock treatment to get rid of all that winter algae buildup. We recommend you wait to shock your pool until the sun starts to go down for it to be most effective
