Causes Of Waterline Stains

How to clean swimming pool tile

If your pool is experiencing waterline stains, don’t be alarmed. Understanding where these stains are coming from will help you address the issue. Here are the three main causes of waterline stains:

  • Calcium carbonate- Usually caused by evaporation at the waterline, this white, flakey deposit is easy to remove.
  • Calcium silicate- This slightly grey deposit is difficult to remove, and it’s usually caused by high pH levels.
  • Efflorescence- A water-soluble lime carried from the earth in evaporating water, it accumulates along grout lines.

How To Clean Pool Tile With Baking Soda

Using baking soda to make a paste mixing a proper ratio of baking soda as well as water you can remove the stains in the proper manner. Use a cloth or sponge to spread the paste on the tiles. You can also use more water and less baking soda and put the mixture in a spray bottle for easier use. Using a clean cloth or sponge and some warm water you can rinse the mixture off of your tiles.

Your Pool Tile Gets Calcium From 2 Sources

Calcium on tile bleeds through the grout from the underlying surface, if that surface was not properly sealed before the tile was installed. Calcium may appear to be dripping out of the grout lines. These areas can be treated, but unfortunately, the reoccurrence cant be stopped, and deep pool tile cleaning may be warranted.

Obtaining clean pool tile will require periodic treatment. Calcium can also accumulate at the waterline if the PH of the pool water is allowed to be too high for too long. In this scenario, a white line will be present at the waterline. This can also be easily addressed with professional pool tile cleaning.

Is Pool Scale A Big Deal

Yes! Calcium scale gets worse the longer you leave it. And it can cause damage to your pool and pool equipment.

To protect your family and your pool, you need to remove calcium from pool tiles. If you don’t, you will eventually be left with a host of other pool problems.

Calcium buildup can irritate the eyes and skin of your pool guests. And, it makes your pool look gross. You won’t get as many keen swimmers with a bunch of scale in the pool.

For example, pool scale can clog your pool filters. Pool filters are designed to handle bugs and leaves. But not hard calcium deposits.

When calcium runs through the filter, your pool’s system will slow down and not work efficiently.

The scale in pools also causes damage to the bottom of your pool. Over time, calcium flakes off the tiles and settles on the bottom of the pool.

This can ruin the floor of your pool and cause you to need to have it refinished. And that’s a huge expense. You don’t want that.

Here are a few ways that you can try to remove calcium from pool tiles.

    • Working Time: 1 hr, 30 mins – 4 hrs
    • Total Time: 1 hr, 30 mins – 4 hrs
    • Skill Level: Beginner

When you are fortunate enough to have a backyard swimming pool or spa, you must also accept that they require regular maintenance to keep them clean. Of course, we know that it’s important to keep leaves and debris out of the water. But even if you are diligent about keeping the water free of debris, stains or grime can collect on the tiles at the pool’s waterline or fill line.

The grime is an accumulation of body soil, sunscreen, and mineral deposits that cling to the tiles. If you have hard-water deposits or stains in sinks or tubs inside your house, they will probably happen to your pool surfaces as well. As water evaporates, scaling occurs when mineral deposits cling to the sides of a pool. It shows up as white or gray scum and is difficult to remove. The two main types of scaling left on the tiles are calcium deposits:

    • Calcium carbonate appears as white, flaky deposits on the tile. If treated with muriatic acid, it will bubble up. Calcium carbonate is the easiest type of deposit to remove.
    • Calcium silicate is slightly darker grey, doesn’t flake, and doesn’t react to muriatic acid. Calcium silicate is much more difficult to remove if it has remained on the tile for a long period.

Our goal is to make your pool tile look new again. With Premiers pool tile cleaning service, we will shut off your filter system . Then, in order for us to clearly see the calcium that needs to be removed, we drop the water level of your pool approximately 6 below the bottom of the tile

To protect your tile, the bead that we use is very fine, almost like a powder. However, the bead is heavy enough to fall down to the bottom of the pool.

After we clean your tile, we vacuum the bead into a canvas bag for recycling. This vacuuming process removes 99% of the bead from the bottom of the pool.

Sometimes, your pool water will look cloudy after cleaning, especially if we are cleaning rock. This will clear up in a couple of days after your system has been running. We recommend rinsing out your cartridge filter after a week or so.

Finally, we apply a polish to your newly cleaned pool tile. This polish will give the tile that wet look and your tile will shine like new. Keep in mind, we cannot prevent calcium from coming back. The time it takes for the calcium to return will depend on how hard your water is, typically, 3-5 years. After we are finished, you will refill your pool. When your pools water level is back to normal, you will turn the system back on and reset the timers for the pool sweep, if needed.
