Why Low Alkalinity Is Bad News
When a pools alkalinity measures below 80 ppm it can cause unwanted side effects, including:
- Fluctuating pH levels. Wild swings in the waters pH will occur if the alkalinity is low. This is also known as pH bounce, and is the result of the pool water not having an adequate buffer, aka the proper alkalinity level. When pH bounce occurs, youll see it swing from being acidic one moment, and alkaline the next.

Add The Appropriate Amount Of Ph/alkalinity Down Or Ph/alkalinity Up To The Hot Tub Filter Compartment While The Jet Pump Is Running
If your alkalinity is at a low or normal level, use pH/Alkalinity Up. If your alkalinity is already high, go with pH/Alkalinity Down instead. Adding 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons of water will decrease total alkalinity by 20ppm.

Can the Acid Slug Lower Total Alkalinity Without Affecting pH?
The ability to control whether you lower Total Alkalinity or pH by the method in which a dose of acid is added to a swimming pool would certainly be of great value to the Pool Operators.
To lower Total Alkalinity drastically with only a slight effect on pH, simply take your dose of acid and pour it slowly into one spot in the deep end of the pool. Youll actually see the bubbles forming around where the slug is added that is, the bicarb burning off and bubbling up. If you wish to lower the pH without also reducing the Total Alkalinity, simply pour the dose of muriatic acid about the pool.

When hydrochloric acid is added to water, the molecules disassociate into both hydrogen ions and chloride ions . This happens, no matter how it is added. How To Lower High Ph And Total Alkalinity
If both pH and TA levels are high in your pool, you will need to add muriatic acid slowly by slowly while testing your pH and TA levels so that you don’t get low levels.
1). Lowering TA Using Muriatic Acid: 0.8 qts of muriatic acid reduces TA by 10ppm in a 10,000 gallons pool.
2). Lowering pH Using Muriatic Acid: 1 qt of muriatic reduces your pH by around 10ppm in a 10,000 gallons pool.
