Calcium hardness is the measurement of the total amount of minerals that are found in your pools water. If youve heard the phrase hard water, it is simply referring to a high mineral content. Ideally, your total hardness should fall between 200-400 ppm, however, it may vary if you have a fiberglass or vinyl pool. Too much calcium hardness causes scaling in your pool and too little causes your pool water to become corrosive. While drinking hard water is not necessarily harmful to ones health, it can pose serious problems to your pool equipment.

Test And Adjust Salt Concentration
- Saltwater pool systems operate efficiently only when salt is in the right concentration.
- Different chlorine generators require different salinity levels. This is the first thing you need to take into consideration before adding or reducing salt in your pool.
- Chlorine generators operate well with salinity levels between 2500 and 3500 ppm. You must either test the salinity level before adjusting it or use a chlorine generator that monitors and displays the salinity reading.
- Cooler geographic regions will experience reduced water conductivity, and if you are taking the reading of salinity from the generator, you may get a much lower and inaccurate reading, so you need to be extra careful not to add too much salt.
- Make sure that you dont add too much salt into the pool. The only way to reduce salinity is by draining the water and refilling with fresh water.
- Test for salinity every week. Keep in mind that salt levels will be recycled during the process of chlorine production, and you may not need to add more unless the level falls way below the recommended range.

Use A Stabilizer Only If Necessary
If possible, always avoid stabilizers unless you have an outdoor pool in a hot and humid climate. Stabilizer is mainly used to help keep free chlorine stable by protecting it from exhaustion by sunlight and high water temperatures. The recommended levels of a stabilizer is between 40 and 80 ppm for saltwater pools.
The correct value of cyanuric may also differ with geographic locations, depending on temperature and how much sunlight is available during the day. This explains why a saltwater pool in Canada will need between 40 and 60 ppm and one in the USA may need up to 80 ppm of cyanuric acid during the summer. Also, the amount of cyanuric acid you need will depend on the amount of free available chlorine. Step : Adjust Total Alkalinity
The total alkalinity measures the total alkaline substance in your pool water. Alkalinity is the name given to the capacity of an aqueous solution to neutralize an acid. The ideal level for TA is 60-80 ppm. The results of improper TA levels range from corrosion of metal pool parts, staining of your pool, burning and itchy eyes, cloudy water, and reduced chlorine efficiency. You can increase the pools TA using sodium bicarbonate and decrease the TA using muriatic acid
Know The Cause Of The Ph Level
A salt water pool creates sodium hydroxide as a byproduct because the sodium in the water combines with the oxygen and hydrogen molecules. One of the reasons behind your pools high pH level could very well be the sodium hydroxide because this system itself has a surprisingly high pH.
The pH level should be stable if youre managing your salt water pool correctly. However, if you arent, and the sodium hydroxide increases significantly without proper maintenance, the pH level will continue to rise seemingly without a cause.
So what can you do if your pH level is rising in your pool and you cant control it?
1. Check the stabilizer level.
An unnaturally high pH level in your salt water pool could be a sign that your salt cell has been shortened due to running for an overly long period of time. Check the level of your cyanuric acid to be sure. The level should be between 80 and 100 ppm.
2. Alter your salt systems run time.
If it turns out your salt cell is running for a long period of time, shorten the run time before you shorten its lifespan. Salt cells are designed to only last up to 10,000 hours. You should be able to maintain an average chlorine level with a run time between eight and 10 hours.
3. Dont overrun the system.

How To Maintain A Saltwater Chlorine Generator
