Building An Indoor Pool Vs Building An Addition

Build your own swimming pool under $ 5,000 – costs and materials

Ideally, the best time to install an indoor pool is during the design and construction of a new home. This can also be done with an existing home but could end up costing more this way. Either way I would recommend consulting with an experienced architect or engineer who has experience with building an indoor pool room.

Adding on a pool house as an addition to the home allows for more flexibility, and can avoid some additional costs of building a structure over an existing pool, or building a pool within an existing home, in the basement or unused recreation room.

The size of an indoor pool is usually a factor. Smaller pools are easier to maintain and less expensive to operate. Many indoor pools may add a Badu Jet on one end, to allow you to swim continuously against a large volume of flowing water. No more flip turns!

Cost Of Building Natural Swimming Pools

I know, we told you we would let you know the cost. The basic calculation is that if you want an in-ground cement natural swimming pool, it will cost you the same as a regular in-ground cement pool with pool decks and landscaping. The difference is, you need to build something twice as large as your swimming zone. The costs run about $100 per square foot. I wont make you do the math this pool would have cost in the $100,000 range to build in the USA. In Mexico, in US dollars, it worked out to about $25,000. And we never have to fill it and never have to add anything to the water. That is so refreshing.

And for $25,000 we got:

  • a cement/concrete lap pool at 400 SF
  • the entire regeneration zone at 600 SF;
  • water garden / regeneration zone
  • solar heating system on the casita roof

Questions? Just ask us we are happy to respond to your queries. And as noted, I will keep updating the photos as the natural swimming pool builds its own ecosystem and establishes itself. There should be far fewer plants in the regeneration zone, eventually, and we will add more koi to turn it into a more of a water garden look. And for sure, I am getting one of those koi elevators.

While not strictly a standard shipping pool, the team at Tough Mudder are using shipping container pools as one of their obstacles. Taking three 20 foot shipping containers, and lining them with plastic, before filling with water and LOTS of ice, these make a formidable obstacle as part of their off road endurance race.

If You Cant Get To Your Workout Swimming At Home Might Be An Option

Putting a lap pool in your backyard is every swimmers dream. But its not cheap. One study found, on average, an inground pool in the U.S. costs about $39,000. However, most backyard lap pools are longer and larger than the average inground recreational pool. That will make the price tag higher. A full-length 25-yard or 25-meter pool can easily exceed $100,000, once you factor in everything.

The cost to build a backyard pool with a lap lane varies with location, materials, topography, and the type of features you want. That makes it hard to pin down the precise cost, but we can break down some of the factors.

Lap Pool Customisation Options

You can customise your lap pools length and style. For example, our;X-Trainer Pools;feature a rectangular design, but theyre slightly wider at 2.7 to 4.2 metres. They also have shallow to deep floor design that can make it challenging to do athletic swimming sessions. However, you can install swim jets and swim in place in an X-Trainer pool.

Another option is to choose different;pool colours;for your lap pools. Bi-Luminate 3D Colours are bright and vivid, and they create a stunning 3D look when the sunlight hits the water in the pool. The Vivid colour range is slightly more cost-effective, but these colours use larger paint chips to create a stunning and eye-catching look.

If you dont want to deal with the cleaning portion of having lap pools, there are;in-floor cleaning systems;that make fantastic alternatives. This system circulates your pool from bottom to top, and it keeps your pools water in constant motion. This motion prevents dead spots, and dead spots are where the bacteria and algae form. Self-cleaning systems can cut down on pool chemical use as well.

Alternatives To Lap Pools

If youre not sure a lap pool is the best choice for your needs or wants, you have options.;Plunge and Courtyard pools are excellent for small yards. They give you the depth of a traditional pool, and you can install swim jets to get a workout. The Vogue Series;is another smaller pool that features a gently sloped floor to make entering and exiting your pool quick and easy.

The plants actually belong on the other side.;We also got two koi, who eat;the mosquito larvae. And then we got about 100 mosquito eating fish and they are in there too. I guess its all part of building the ecosystem. Some people might get squeamish about swimming with fish, but theyll live in the regeneration zone. The two large macetas you see on the left are the housing for the charcoal filters and will be spill over pots. Choose The Type Of Above

Above-ground swimming pools come in three major types: inflatable, metal or resin frame, and rigid wall.

  • Inflatable Pools: Inflatable pools are the least expensive and fastest type of pool you can install. Most are limited at 42 inches high. Inflatable pools are less durable than framed or rigid wall pools.
  • Metal or Resin Frame Pools: Metal or resin frame above-ground pools rely on an outer framework to hold the pool liner in place. These pools are moderately expensive and can last for years longer than inflatable pools.
  • Rigid Wall Pools: Rigid wall above-ground pools’ sturdy metal walls form the basin of the pool. A waterproof liner within the basin holds the water. Rigid wall pools are the most expensive above-ground pool but the most durable, too.

How To Build A Natural Swimming Pool

If youre keen on something a bit more at one with Mother Earth, then this is the solution for you. Natural swimming ponds are made by integrating plants with an organic filtration and drainage system into what is effectively a living ecosystem. It encourages wildlife to thrive and creates a pool that blends harmoniously with the garden.

The pond will have a solid base to allow for easy removal of debris, but there wont be a need for the chemicals used in conventional pools as the careful design works to create an environment for naturally purified water.

The swimming zone is generally kept separate from the plants, so you wont need to worry about catching your feet on any aquatic foliage. Note that, because of the carefully balanced ecosystem, the water isnt suitable for fish.

The size and shape of the pool are important since these factors affect the cost of the pool and its maintenance, as well as its ability to fit well within your yard.

Picking The Proper Site

Picking the best place for your pool is as important as the pool itself. An experienced pool contractor can provide valuable insight, but be sure to consider the following pool-placement tips:

  • Capture the Sun: Take advantage of free solar energy by choosing a pool location that’s open to the sun and well away from any trees. Such a location will not only warm up the water, it’ll also reduce the number of leaves that drop into the pool.
  • Block Breezes: Building a pool in a windy location greatly increases water evaporation, which means you’ll have keep adding water to maintain the proper level. Strong winds can also make you feel uncomfortably cool when wet. Create a windbreak by erecting a solid-board fence, or by planting a row of thick shrubs.
  • High and Dry: Dont set the pool in a low-lying area, which could result in the pool flooding with mud and debris during periods of heavy rain.
  • All Clear Above and Below: The pool shouldn’t be located beneath overhead telephone or electrical wires, or directly over buried sewer lines, septic systems or electrical cables.
  • Keep Eye Contact: Whenever possible, build the pool within view of the house. That way, you can keep an eye on swimmers even while you’re indoors.

Painting A Natural Swimming Pool

The Jacaranda in the distance gives away the season they usually bloom in March/April. Sometimes earlier. This year, it was March. And the pool bottom painting is almost complete. Its black to help retain heat, and to keep it looking more like a natural pond. Each stage seems to take forever at this point but it does have to dry. Have you ever watched paint dry? Were starting to wonder about the wisdom of taking on a project this large.

Another angle and more Jacarandas.

One last strip to paint black, but they ran out of paint. And its a custom color, so we waited another week to cover that little patch of green. The regeneration zone also has a layer of fabric beneath the paint.

Lap Pool Maintenance And Care

Theres little difference in the maintenance and ongoing expense of lap pools compared to traditional in-ground pools. Because lap pools have fewer beauty features such as waterfalls, there may be fewer things that can go wrong with them. If you dont want to hand vacuum your lap pool, you can buy a robot pool cleaner or hire a pool service to maintain the pool.

How Much Does A Natural Swimming Pool Cost

And Im sure your next question is going to be How much does it cost to build natural swimming pools? And of course, it depends on the size and configuration. And your location. Do you want a cement bottom or are you happy with a plastic bottom? How large do you want the pool? Do you want heat? Whats your source? Solar? Gas? Electric heat? Will your pool be totally separate from the regeneration zone? Or will they flow into each other? And remember, the regeneration zone needs to be at least the same size as the swimming zone. Its better if its bigger.;All important questions. And clearly, the first step is designing your natural swimming pool. Theres no accurate budget until then. In general, you can build a natural swimming pool in the US for anywhere from $30,000 to $100,000 and up. And of course, here in Mexico, it is less expensive. Wait until you hear how much less.

This was our lawn and one garden wall when we bought the house. Those topiary bushes are Bougambilia ;purple, not really flowering and ugly as sin. And lots of grass to water and mow. So our first design decision where to put the pool was clear. Get rid of that lawn. And those round;topiaries.

They just kept bringing in plants. We gave the designer a budget and the trees kept coming. We wanted the surroundings of our;natural swimming pool to be tropical and we werent disappointed.
