Swimming Pool Volume Calculations

HOW TO CALCULATE GALLONS OF WATER IN POOL

Pool volume is calculated based on length, width, and average depths. Basically we are trying to figure out the cubic area of the entire swimming pool, then multiply by a given volume of water per that cubic unit of measurement. Here are the multipliers, depending on the units of measurement you use.

  • 1 Cubic Foot = 7.48 gallons / 28.31 L
  • 1 Cubic Meter = 264.17 gallons / 1,000 L

The infographic above gives you the basics for those common shapes of pools. Obviously, free form pools that are not conveniently kidney-shaped are more difficult.

How To Calculate Pool Volume

Like a novice cook who needs to know how much of each ingredient to add to a dish, pool owners need to know how much of their maintenance products they need to add to their water. In order to do this properly, pool owners must know their pool volume how much water is actually in their pool.

Over-estimating is a waste of money; under-estimating will result in unsanitary water. If the volume of your pool isn’t in the original documentation, it’s easy to calculate it yourself.

Chlorine / Free Chlorine

How To Calculate The Number of Gallons In A Pool

Chlorine is used to kill germs, algae, bacteria, and organisms like;Cryptosporidium. Free Chlorine is the amount available in your water to kill these things. You always want to maintain a free Chlorine level of at least 1. Min Max Range being 1 to 5, with 2-4 being ideal.

There are many different types;of Chlorine, with different strengths. Some are liquids, like Sodium Hypochlorite, Some are powders, like Trichlor, Dichlor, and Calcium Hypochlorite. NEVER MIX TYPES. If you pour liquid over solid it could go boom.

If you have a vinyl liner, you may use liquid Chlorine as I recommend, but you may also keep a couple Chlorine tabs/pucks in a floater, or in the skimmer basket. Do not pour liquid chlorine near the skimmer, or floater, with tabs/pucks in either.

The;calculator gives you a choice of these four chlorine types. So no matter which type of Chlorine you have, you know how much to use.

Constant Depth Pools: Square Or Rectangular

Length x width x depth x 7.5 = volume

Length times width gives the surface area of the pool. Multiplying that by the depth gives the volume in cubic feet. Since there are 7.5 gallons in each cubic foot, multiply the cubic feet of the pool by 7.5 to arrive at the volume of the pool, expressed in gallons.

Chlorine Tablets Vs Chlorine Granules

Many pool owners believe that chlorine tablets and chlorine granules work well together. However, most tend to use granules at the beginning of the cleaning process to remove bacteria and algae.

This is because they usually remove these at a much quicker rate. If you havent treated your pool for a week or two, granules will get things done much quicker every time.;

That being said, chlorine tablets are very effective when used on a regular basis, once a week.

But, if you have a pool that is under regular rainfall, sunshine, or experiences frequent debris, chlorine granules are usually preferred. ;;

Come On Lets Be Measured About This

A gorgeous 15,000 gallon pool we recycled today.

Unfortunately, I cant be in your backyard with a measuring tape. Really wish I could help out, but its just not possible. So before we go furthereven in this next step, where you wont need to crunch any numbers to find out how much water is in your poolyou have got to know what youre working with. And the type of measurements you need? Those will depend on what shape of pool you have.

For a rectangular pool, youll want to know how long, wide, and deep your pool is. Remember to measure both the shallow end and the deep end.

For a circular pool, you just need to measure across the middle, and measure how deep it is.

Note: To keep your calculations as straightforward as possible later, its best to round to the nearest foot. Dont worry, your calculation will be accurate enough for choosing a pump, adding chemicals to your water, and all that other fun stuff pool owners get to do. Variable Depth Pools: Square And Rectangular

Length x width x average depth x 7.5 = volume

Length times width gives the surface area of the pool. Multiplying that by the average depth gives the volume in cubic feet. Since there are 7.5 gallons in each cubic foot, multiply the cubic feet of the pool by 7.5 to arrive at the volume of the pool .

Measure the length, width, and average depth of the pool, rounding each measurement off to the nearest foot or percentage of one foot. One inch equals 0.0833 feet. Therefore, multiply the number of inches in your measurements by 0.0833 to get the appropriate percentage of one foot.

Example: 25 ft, 9 in. = 25 ft +

= 25 + 0.75

= 25.75 ft

If the shallow end is 3 feet and the deep end is 9 feet, and assuming the slope of the pool bottom is gradual and even, then the average depth is 6 feet.

Average depth = / 2

Average depth = / 2 = 6 feet.

If most of the pool is only 3 or 4 feet and then a small area drops off suddenly to 10 feet, you will have a different average depth. In such a case, you might want to treat the pool as two parts. Measure the length, width, and average depth of the shallow section, then take the same measurements for the deeper section. Calculate the volume of the shallow section and add that to the volume you calculate for the deeper section.

Length x width x average depth x 7.5 = volume

25.75 ft x 10 ft x 6 ft x 7.5 = 11,587.5 gallons

How To Calculate The Average Depth Of A Swimming Pool

Not every swimming pool is built with aneven pool bottom. Many inground pools have a shallow end for young children andlearner swimmers, and a deep end for the expert swimmers. Assuming yourswimming pool is deeper on one side than it is on the other, you can get theaverage depth by adding up the depth of each end, and dividing the sum by two.

Lets say the deep end is 10 feet, and the shallow end is 6 feet. If the pool bottom slopes evenly, then the average depth is /2 = 8 feet. But then, assuming that the larger part of the pool is just a few feet deep and then a smaller part of it drops to about 9 feet, youd have to calculate a different way.

You will need to treat the pool like it is split into two different pools measure the length, width and average depth of the shallow part and use that to calculate the volume of the shallow part. Do the same for the deeper part, and add up both volumes to get the total volume of the pool.

A note of warning: The depth of the swimming pool means the depth of the water it contains; do not measure the depth of the container itself. Doing so will result in inaccurate calculations or the risk of adding the wrong quantity of chemicals to the water . If the water reaches the brim of the pool, then measuring with either depth may be okay.

How To Calculate The Volume Of An Irregular Oblong Or Kidney Shaped Pool

The volume of a oblong or kidney shaped pool is a little more complicated. You can calculate its volume by multiplying the length in feet times times .45 times the average depth in feet times 7.48.

volume = length × × .45 × depth × 7.48

The first part × .45) is used to find the area, and then the volume is found by multiplying by the depth. Like before, multiplying by 7.48 finds the number of gallons in the pool.
