The grime is an accumulation of body soil, sunscreen, and mineral deposits that cling to the tiles. If you have hard-water deposits or stains in sinks or tubs inside your house, they will probably happen to your pool surfaces as well. As water evaporates, scaling occurs when mineral deposits cling to the sides of a pool. It shows up as white or gray scum and is difficult to remove. The two main types of scaling left on the tiles are calcium deposits:
- Calcium carbonate appears as white, flaky deposits on the tile. If treated with muriatic acid, it will bubble up. Calcium carbonate is the easiest type of deposit to remove.
- Calcium silicate is slightly darker grey, doesn’t flake, and doesn’t react to muriatic acid. Calcium silicate is much more difficult to remove if it has remained on the tile for a long period.

What About Efflorescence
Efflorescence is also a form of pool scale, but it comes not from your pool water, but from moisture contained within raised rock walls, or beneath the pool coping stone. It can be seen coming out of mortar joints between stones on a raised rock wall, or can drip down onto pool perimeter tile, flowing from the mortar bed beneath pool coping stones.
Efflorescence can be slowed by using Clear Sealer on rock or brick faces, and making sure that pool caulking is maintained to keep water out of the expansion joint. For raised rock walls, applying a bitumen or similar waterproofing on the backside of the wall can be used to block the moisture seeping through the wall.
Calcium Scale On Plaster
To remove scale on plaster, it’s best to start with the pumice stone to see if it will do the trick, since calcium usually forms in raised crystals on the surface.
If you have trouble removing it with the stone, you can try an acid wash with it as well.
Plaster is a little bit harder to damage, so you might even be able to use a wire bristled brush for tough deposits.

What Causes Scale In Pools
Calcium carbonate scale can form along the waterline of the pool as evaporation increases during the summer. Scale itself is a white translucent color, but is often mixed with dirt and algae to appear darker.
Calcium crystals can form as nodules dotting the surface of the pool, or on ladders and light rings, or as crusty deposits in corners. Minerals like calcium commonly form sheets of scale, covering the entire pool surface in a thin layer.
The most common cause of calcium scale in pools is the result of high calcium hardness, over 400 ppm, yet is triggered by high Alkalinity, high pH and high water temperatures. Some will tell you to drain the pool if over 400 ppm, but not necessarily!
The best way to control for the various elements leading to pool scaling is to perform a regular test known as the Langelier Saturation Index, or LSI for short. An LSI test determines a pools preponderance for scaling or etching. A pool is considered to have a balanced LSI when results are -0.3 to +0.3. Test results below -0.3 indicate a prevalence toward corrosion and above +0.3 and your water is scale-forming.
The math is a bit complicated to calculate the LSI, but you can use the Pentair LSI Tool just plug in your water test levels and it crunches the numbers for you! The tool is then used to see the effect of adjusting chemical levels.
Pros And Cons Of Using A Pumice Stone
A pumice stone is a popular tool for pool cleaning and breaking down calcium deposits. Because pumice stones have a rough exterior, they are great for scrubbing through calcium silicate.
Additionally, pumice stones are inexpensive and easy to find. Although pumice stones are useful for cleaning pool tiles calcium deposits, there are some cons to using this pool tile cleaner.
Before using a pumice stone to clean tile surfaces, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. One aspect includes the length of time it takes to clean a surface.
