Option #: Pool Deck Sealer With A Gloss Finish

Your acrylic concrete sealer products , will give your concrete a glossier, wetter look that will pop the color so it appears as saturated and vibrant as a stone that youve just run under water. But dont let that wet, glass look deceive you. This also delivers a slip-resistant surface on a normally slippery area.

Concrete Stain Vs Paint And Dye

Stains work by penetrating the concrete surface, creating a long-lasting colored surface that wont peel, chip, or fade. They are commonly available in earth tones. They will impact a rich variegated, translucent color to both outdoor and indoor concrete. Any imperfection or stain will show through, even after a couple of coats of the product have been applied.

Note that, if you enjoy a natural lasting look, opt for stains.

The paint will usually coat the surface and create a shade that will wear away after a while. Paints will impact a solidly consistent color. This is one of the good ideas if your concrete is badly stained and youd like not to see the imperfections.

Concrete dyes will offer an array of colors such as blue, yellow, and purple. They are commonly utilized together with stains to enhance the final result greatly. Dyes also impact transparent color. They, however, dry quicker and require little cleanup. They are also popular for adding color to polished concrete. These materials are not popularly applied outside the home because they are UV unstable.

Diy Spotlight: Staining A Concrete Pool Deck

Our customer, Jerry S. from Sussex, N.J., laid colored concrete pavers for a walkway in the backyard. He used several different colors and it looked great.

Later a pool was added and a deck poured in gray concrete. The gray concrete color wasnt complimentary to the pavers so Jerry decided to come back to Direct Colors for a complimentary color to his previous work.

As the multicolor look of the pavers was already busy, Jerry was looking for something with a more solid, neutral appearance. Acid stain generally provides variegated finish and probably wouldnt be the best option for this project. Jerry also preferred something he could quickly apply, seal and get on with his summer.

Jerry submitted a free project consultation about his project and we recommended he consider staining the pool deck using Antiquing Concrete Stain Colors. This exterior concrete stain provides even, rich color and is our easiest colorant to apply shake, spray and dry. No question he could have the whole pool deck finished and back in service over a weekend.

Jerry tried a colored antiquing stain trial kit to test color and color combination before ordering full sizes. The samples take only a few minutes to apply with a foam brush and can be scrubbed off later with stiff bristle brush and a soapy water solution.

Color Choices And Methods:

  • Gray concrete pool decks can give the look of rich slate or weathered stone. Adding a touch of blue will echo the color of water and mimic the look of river rock.
  • Brown is also a popular choice for pool decks, as it blends in well with landscaping and complements many styles of homes. Browns range from light tans to deep walnuts.
  • If your concrete pool deck is exposed to the hot sun all day, you can keep the surface cooler by coloring the concrete with lighter shades, such as sand, coral, or pearly white tones.
  • A newer trend for pool deck colors is white, which offers reduced heat. As seen in this project the white concrete reduced heat by as much as 20 degrees, all while giving the homeowner a great modern look for their pool deck and patio.
  • Release agents act as bond breakers that prevent stamps from sticking to the concrete, and also add color to the surface resulting in an antiquing effect.
  • Color hardeners and acid stains can also be used to bring your pool deck to life.
  • Colors may be applied with a sprayer or roller, by hand using brushes, sponges and more, or even dry broadcast onto the surface.

Option #: Pool Deck Sealer With A Satin Or Eggshell Finish

When Jim demonstrates a satin-paint style of sealer finish , he does so by wiping a dampened cloth across the concretes surface. This subtly darkens and enhances the color, which is the closest visual example he can give to show you how a penetrating sealer will appear on your concrete. It will make the reds or greens pop, but its more of an eggshell finish with no real glossy appearance to it.

Additional Benefits To Sealing A Concrete Pool Deck

Concrete decks and other hardscape surfaces can be quite lovely but, unfortunately, can be marred by all sorts of conditions. By protecting your concrete surfaces with quality epoxy sealers, the coatings can stabilize the surface, inhibit fading, make maintenance much easier, and protect it from stains. Epoxy coatings will make your deck a more livable and beautiful space.

Epoxy sealers will slow down the mold growth process and make it easier to eliminate mold and mildew from the pool deck’s surface. Also, sealers stabilize joints and fill cracks.

Especially when they’re wet, poured cast concrete pool decks can be slippery. Although it’s challenging to prevent a pool deck from getting wet, additives in the epoxy coating will make the pool deck less slick and hazardous.

Should You Seal Concrete Around A Pool

Sealing the concrete around your pool is easy to do, affordable, and has all sorts of benefits with almost no drawbacks. A concrete sealer will improve your pool decks appearance, prevent fading caused by harmful UV rays and protect it from stains and harsh pool chemicals. Itll also make the surface a little less slippery when wet and help prevent mold and mildew growth. Think of sealing a concrete pool deck like waxing your car, wearing sunscreen or sealing granite countertops. Although using a sealer isnt required, it provides an additional layer of protection for your concrete.

It doesnt matter if your concrete is raw, stamped or stained, sealing it every few years is recommended. A good quality sealer will not only protect your concrete but also bring out the rich color of whatever they seal. Sealers are available in many different gloss levels, ranging from flat to high gloss. A tinted sealer can even be used that will further enhance the color of your pools concrete. A sealer will even help prevent efflorescence, its that white powdery residue that can form on the surface of concrete. Slip resistant sealers are also available which are especially useful around a pool.

The concrete around your pool should be sealed every 2-3 years depending on weather conditions and the amount of sun the pool gets per year. Preventing future damage will not only save money in the long run but will keep your concrete looking like new for years.

How Do I Pick A Color For My Pool Deck

As much as possible, you would want the pool deck paint colors to be light so that it wont absorb heat when exposed to sunlight, making the deck too hot for barefoot walking. If you cant find a good complementing color or if lighter shades of the same color do not appeal to you, then neutral is the best choice.

Pool Deck Paint: Pros And Cons

Painting is a traditional method of adding color to any concrete surface, both horizontal and vertical. It comes in a wide range of colors and paint experts can even mix them to create a custom color that matches your preference. The paint dries to an opaque finish, covering up any unsightly stain or blemish that the concrete deck may have. Patterns and designs can be customized to make the deck a creative work of art. This method of adding color to a deck is one of the easiest to apply. However, it can be quite messy so make sure that surrounding areas are protected.

The downside to paint is that it creates a thin film of color on top of the concrete deck, but does not penetrate the slab. It traps moisture in and when that happens, there is a possibility that the layer of paint would separate from the deck, causing it to bubble, flake, and peel.

Brushed Concrete Vs Stamped Concrete Cost

Of all the types of patios that one can put around a swimming pool, regular brushed concrete is certainly the most inexpensive.

In most cases, it costs 4070% less than stamped concrete.

Also, because there is no serious maintenance required down the road , the residual expenses are very low as well.

Two Popular Types Of Sealants

When it comes to choosing a pool deck sealer, a few different types can be used. The two most popular sealers for concrete are acrylic and sealers that are water repellent.

Acrylic sealers will leave behind a visible surface film on concrete. When water splashes up onto the coating, it just sits on the surface because of the film. However, while the coat itself isn’t slippery, the water sitting on the surface is. This can pose a hazard for children and the elderly. When using an acrylic sealer, be sure to add a non-slip additive to the topcoat to provide more surface traction. This will leave behind a sand-like grit. The grit doesn’t guarantee that the pool deck’s surface will be completely slip-proof, but the additives will make a noticeable improvement.

Unlike acrylic coatings, water repellent sealers do not leave behind a visible surface film. They work within the pores of the concrete slab. This kind of sealer chemically reacts to the concrete surface to reduce water absorption by up to 95%. It does this by forming a hydrophobic barrier in the tiny openings of the poured concrete. Water repellent sealers won’t change the surface traction properties of the concrete or make the surface slippery. They do, however, help protect the concrete from deterioration caused by it absorbing water.

Protect Your Pool Deck From Stains And Cracking

Protection against stains is another benefit of sealing a concrete pool deck. Your pool deck will be subjected to many things that can leave stains on the surface â chlorine, salt, chemicals, leaves, dirt, fertilizer, pet urine, and more. The right sealer will keep all of these from penetrating the surface of the concrete and leaving unsightly stains.

If you live in a cold climate, sealing your pool deck will reduce the chance of freeze thaw damage. Freeze thaw damage can cause cracks or surface flaking. It is caused by water penetrating the concrete surface and then expanding as it freezes. A sealer will keep water from sinking into your pool deck. Water should bead up on the surface of the concrete if your sealer is doing its job. If this is not happening, it’s time to reseal your pool deck. High traffic areas will likely need resealing on a frequent basis.

Brushed Concrete Vs Stamped Concrete Aesthetics

Pool Deck Stain and Seal

Without question, stamped concrete, especially when done the right way, is absolutely beautiful. With so many colors and patterns now available, stamped concrete can almost match any appearance the homeowner is looking for and completely alter the look and feel of a backyard.

Brushed concrete, for all of its functional benefits, simply doesn’t stand up aesthetically to stamped concrete. This does not mean that it’s ugly it just isn’t quite as pleasing to the eye as is stamped.

Personally, when it comes down to it, I feel both options can look very nice when designed with some character and surrounded by nice landscaping.
