Steps To Taking Down An Oval Above Ground Swimming Pool
1. Drain the pool
The easiest way to do this is by poking a few holes in the bottom of the pool liner and allowing the water to slowly drain into the earth. You can use your pool pole to do this or anything else that will make small holes in the liner.
You can also use a sump pump or your water hose to siphon out most of the water.
2. Locate the wall bolts, remove the upright hiding them, and spray with penetrant
The wall bolts will most likely be fused with their nuts, so although this step is somewhat out of order, you want to get some lubricant/penetrant on the wall bolts and nuts as soon as you can.
In most cases, the bolts that connect the wall together will be hidden behind an upright closest to your skimmer/return openings. Remove the top caps in that area to get to the top seats.
Unscrew the top seats/rails so you can get to the top connector for the upright hiding the wall bolts. Remove the top connector and then remove that upright.
With that upright removed, the wall bolts are easily accessible. Spray them generously and repeatedly with a penetrant like WD-40. Let soak.
3. Remove all top caps to expose the top screws. Spray with lubricant
Just like the wall bolts, the screws used to connect the top rails to the top connectors may be rusty and fused. Spray them all with a penetrant and let them soak.
NOTE: When removing the top caps, you may encounter some wasps nests. Have some wasp spray handy for this.

Remove The Pool Walls

There are several reasons for taking an above ground pool down, but regardless of why you are doing it, the concern is how to do it. When you take the pool apart, it is important to do it in the proper order so that nothing, including yourself is at risk. If you have the original boxes that all of the parts came in, it is a big help in the dismantling process, but by no means is it essential.
Drain the pool. Place your pole and vacuum head with the vacuum hose attached in the bottom of your pool. Turn the system to the waste setting and while holding the vacuum head near the bottom, begin vacuuming to waste. Do not walk away and just leave the vacuum system working by itself. You must monitor the entire process so that your pump does not run dry which would damage it. Operate the vacuum until only inches of water remain.
During the draining process, other members of your team can begin to dismantle and remove the ladder, the return inlet fitting and any pool lights or pool alarms you may have.
When the water is evacuated, dismantle the skimmer and unhook the pump and filter system.
Remove the drain plugs from both the pump and filter canister and let any accumulated water run out. Empty out the pump basket of any debris.
Empty out old filter media be it sand, D.E. powder or cartridge and clean the inside of the canister. Once clean and dry, replace the plugs on both the pump and the filter canister.

Step 1) Prior to Closing
Several days prior to closing your pool, test the water for the pH level, total alkalinity, and chlorine / salt water levels. The water balance is important to protect the pool from corrosion or scale build-up during Winter shut down.
Step 2) Perform a Complete Inspection
a) Finding Leaks
Caution: Make sure the pool is not leaking before covering. Serious structural damage can occur if leaks go undetected through Winter shut down from ice movement. Maintain a strict leak inspection during the fall, Winter and Spring months.
To determine if the pool is leaking, mark the liner at the water level with a non-permanent marking device such as tape or a wax pencil and observe the water level in the pool for 10 to 14 days after the pool has been closed for the season.
b) Check the Liner
Make sure the top of the liner is still attached to the pool wall. Make sure there are no leaks. Repair any liner holes with a vinyl patch: any small punctures in the liner can be easily repaired with underwater repair kits available at Pool Supplies Canada. Do not remove the liner from the pool, as removal of the liner will void the existing warranty.
