Which Is The Most Expensive Type Of Pool Filter And Is It Any Good

Who Makes the Best Replacement Pool Filter Cartridges? Part One of Two

A DE filter is the costliest to buy, and its also the most effective filter. Making use of diatomaceous earth , water passes through this media and it removes microscopic particles as small as 1 micron. So, while youll pay a little more for one of these pool filters, youll enjoy superior water clarity as a result.

How To Change The Sand In Your Filter

  • Backwash the filter and put off the pump.
  • Remove the filter lid and remove all the sand.
  • Ensure the air relief tube is connected to the bottom pipe.
  • Fill the filter halfway with water and put the correct amount of new sand, preferably 20 grade silica sand.
  • Start the backwash on the filter and backwash until the sight glass runs clear.
  • Turn the pump off, put the filter back on the filter, and turn the pump on.
  • Whats The Best De Pool Filter

are the best pool filter types in terms of performance. They are also the most complicated type of pool filter, with regards to the internal grid assembly, and having to add DE powder, which is really what does the filtering.

Most DE pool filters use a concentric DE grid arrangement, but there are some distinctions

    1. Hayward is the only company still making the Big Boy, a 72 sq. ft. DE filter, for large pools and water features.

    2. Pentair offers DE filters with Vertical grids in the System 3 filters, and also the Purex style Spiro-Mite design in the SMBW model.

    3. Pentair also offers cylindrical elements in the Quad DE and System 2 models, which use a cartridge style design, as do the Hayward XStream pool filters.

    4. DE filters have a sleek, slim design, and large handles on the filter lid, for help when removing it for grid cleaning.

Ill let you in on a little industry secret If you buy a pool filter from a major manufacturer you really dont need to worry about which is best theyre all pretty much the same. Theyve all been producing filters for many years, and are under the very big and watchful eye of your CPSC.

Do yourself a big favor, and dont buy no-name pool filters, or off brands stick with the Big 3 and youll never have any regrets.

The thing that I liked the most about this product is that it works significantly better than regular pool sand. This product has particles that have almost twice as much surface area compared to regular pool sand, making it more efficient at filtering even microscopic debris.

From the moment I changed out the filter media in my fluidized bed filter with this product, in less than half an hour, there was a noticeable improvement in the water quality. Not only did the water get a whole lot clearer, but the nitrate and ammonia levels dropped significantly.

As mentioned earlier, this filter medium does more than catching the solid waste floating in the water. It also works great as a natural chemical filter. It helped me get the ammonia level in my goldfish tank under control. It is a safe and completely natural alternative to chemical solutions.

Another reason why this medium is ideal for fluidized bed filters is that it is less dense than sand, which makes them easier to tumble in the reactor. Also, because they move constantly, they are less likely to clump up even when they get a bit dirty.

Speaking of the sand getting dirty, when the medium does get âfullâ of dirt and impurities, you can ârechargeâ it by giving it a good rinse under running water until the water runs clear. You can get several uses from one batch of this filter medium, making it quite economical.

    • Grab the filter grids and rinse it all out.
    • Place the clean DE filter grids back in the tank.
    • Turn on the filter and prime it. Open the air relief and water till a steady spring of water flows out. Close the air relief afterward.

    Sand Cartridge Or De Filters

Your filter is your last line of defense in trapping debris on a constant basis and keeping it out of your pool. Thats why it is so important to use the right type and keep it operating as cleanly as possible. Each filter type has its advantages and disadvantages. The clarity you desire, the environment and your willingness to maintain the filter and its equipment will determine which type is best for you.

    What is a micron?

A micron is 1 millionth of a meter. In comparison, a human hair is about 70 microns across.

There are many factors that determine how effectively each filter can do its job, including filter area, water pressure and the size of the particles that it can trap. This ability is based on micron size. A filter that traps particles about 5 microns wide will collect more material than one that traps particles between 25-30 microns.

Below is a breakdown of the different types of pool filters and their benefits.

    1. Clear Water:

    What is a Sand Filter?

Sand filters use 20-grade silica sand capable of trapping particles as small as 20-30 microns.

Maintenance: Sand filters are considered to be the easiest to maintain. Sand filters are backwashed when the pressure reads 10 psi over the normal operating level. With proper water chemistry, you can expect your filter media to last 5-10 years.

    2. Clearer Water:

    What is a Cartridge Filter?

Cartridge filters can trap particles as small as 10-20 microns.

    3. Clearest Water:

    Time Cleaning Or Maintaining:

In the ease of use category, sand filters are the undisputed winners. They are easy to operate and understand and easy to backwash, and you hardly ever need to go inside the tank for any reason. DE filters, by contrast, require adding a fresh charge of DE powder after each backwash, and every 6 months they will need to be opened up and hosed thoroughly and inspected for missing parts or damage. Cartridge filters can be very low maintenance when they are big enough, with cleaning needed only every 3-4 months, but if small, you could be opening up the filter every few weeks. Cleaning cartridges is not hard, but its going to be awhile expect to spend at least 10 minutes per cartridge, hosing it carefully top to bottom. For best results with all filter types, use a pool filter cleaner annually to remove minerals and oily deposits.

How To Find Out The Right Size

Who Makes the Best Pool Filter Cartridges? Part Two of Two

It is important that the pool filter matches and marries with the size of your pool. If they do not reciprocate each other you would have eternal issues with your pool filter. Every pool filter whichever you may select has their limitations and it is imperative that you be prudent in your selection and also that it is the right decision. Pool filters provide details like the quantum of water that they would flow though during a set period of time. For example 57,600 gallons in 8 hours or it could be 72,000 gallons in 10 hours.

This should give you an indication as to which model and brand of pool filter that you would need to select. If your pool is anywhere near these sizes you could select one of the above brands or models to keep your pool clean, clear and healthy. There are different types of pool filters also around from which you could select. That would depend on your preferences and also the availability and other salient factors. Using the right type of filter whether it would be a cartridge, sand or diatomaceous earth would depend which of the three you would like to use in the filtration process of your pool.

How Do You Install An Above

The proper way to install an above-ground pool depends on the type. However, there’s a general process to follow when setting up standard pools with PVC walls and steel frames. After clearing an area and making sure the ground is level, start by laying down the ground cloth and placing the bottom plate on top.

Next, connect the metal rails to the bottom plate and around the perimeter. Then connect the vertical side rails to the bottom portion of the frame. Be sure to read the directions carefully, as the different metal rods can look similar but won’t line up or connect properly if you use the wrong ones.

After that, install the lining onto the bottom plate and up the walls. When finished, your pool should have a balanced shape, and the walls should all be the same height.

What Is The Best Filter For My Swimming Pool?

The only filters I ever owned have been sand filters. They were much bigger than what was recommended and Ive always been very proud of my clean, sparkling pool. Personally, I can only speak about the sand filters, and I believe that you can get excellent results from them. The wasted pool water when backwashing the filter was a concern to me because I live in a water scarce area. The problem with the backwash water is that it contains pool chemicals, so I did not want to pump it into the garden untreated. I backwash the water into an open container and leave it there until the next cycle to let most of the chemicals evaporate. Just before the backwash I pump it into the garden and have experienced no problems. If you live in a water scarce area or hate the idea of losing the water, its worth considering.

When using a D.E. filter, the same system works, the D.E. settles at the bottom of the open container, and it wont harm your plants. When backwashing a D.E. filter, you have to replenish the used D.E. powder in the filter. Although its a simple enough operation, it differs from the sand filter and its an ongoing expense.

All types of filters tend to clog up faster when treating a pool at the beginning of the season. The cartridge filter must be removed and washed, the sand and D.E. filter backwashed and the D.E. powder replenished. Compared to D.E. and cartridge filters, sand filters are the least expensive, and some argue that its the easiest to maintain.

How To Add New De To The Filter

After youve cleaned your filter, rather than adding D.E. powder directly to the grids, youll get much better coverage if you add it through the pools skimmer.

    • Mix the D.E with enough water to make a slurry, which will look like a thin, creamy solution.
    • Make sure the pool pump is running.
    • Slowly pour the solution directly into the skimmer.

As the D.E. passes through the filter, it will evenly distribute over the grids. Youll need to wait a while before swimming to give the mixture time to fully integrate with the filter, so you may want to do this in the evening, and then run your pump overnight.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Cartridge Filter

    Advantages

    • Low maintenance. As a pool service professional, a cartridge filter in my opinion is the easiest to maintain. Pop out the cartridge, rinse and you’re done.
    • Not a high cost to replace the filter once a year. These also do a very good job filtering water and maintaining decent water clarity. As stated above, it’s the middle of the road as far as microns capturing debris. This is a good filter for a residential pool and highly recommended for a screen enclosed pool.
    • Cost for a cartridge filterâ element only, depending on sizeâ runs between $65 and $150 . Entire new filter with cartridge included, between $200-400.

    Disadvantages

    • If a pool has some problems such as algae or water cloudiness, these cartridges have a tendency to clog quickly when trying to filter cloudy or “green” water. The cartridge needs to be rinsed every few hours until the pool is clear. If the pool is maintained regularly and you don’t have many algae issues, then I would certainly recommend this type.

    Types Of Pool Filters

Three types of filters are commercially available, the sand filter, pleated cartridges, and D.E. filters that have grids coated with diatomaceous earth powder. But which type of pool filter is the best for inground pools?

Sand is a good filter medium, and its been around for many years. When dirt builds up in a sand filter, the pressure inside the filter rises. When this happens, the filter must be backwashed. Which means the water flow direction is reversed to wash out the contaminants. The backwash water is dirty and contains chemicals, so its wasted.

The filter sand should be replaced every 7 to 10 years, and normally its the only times you open the tank. Sand replacements that are promised to perform even better are available, and its something worth considering if you wish to improve your current sand filter. We will discuss all the filter maintenance issues in detail after reviewing the best pool filters for inground pools. For now, you should keep in mind that sand was long considered the best pool filter.
