Happiness Is A Warm Pool

Swimming in a warm pool is a wonderful feeling, and while we hear from many pool owners in the cooler states & provinces that they really enjoy the experience of a warm swim from late spring or early summer through to autumn, the cost of heating their pool can be a major downer, even with a highly efficient system like a Heat Pump Pool Heater . One of the things were asked a lot at EcoHome is How can I reduce the cost of heating my swimming pool?

There are clearly two factors here just like when heating a home. On one hand we need to consider how to reduce the cost of the energy used to heat the pool, on the other hand we need to consider how to reduce the amount of heat a pool loses and therefore needs. If it loses less heat in the first place, a pool will cost less to keep warm because it needs less energy to maintain a constant and comfortable temperature after the initial heat-up period. A Passive solar home design is always the cheapest to heat, environmentally speaking.

Each pool environment is different, so while the savings for each tip are universal in the scheme of things, they are not all universally applicable to a particular pool. Here are ten tips that will help save energy and money on pool heating costs and even if some will save more than others, each tip on their own will save on energy use to some percent And as they say, theres no such thing as a small economy!

Horsepower And Voltage Ratings

Depending on the size of your pool and your flow rate requirements, the horsepower and voltage rating of the best pump for your needs can vary. In general, the lower horsepower pumps deliver lower flow rates than higher-HP options.

That said, some lower-HP pool pumps provide impressive levels of performance without using much energy. You can also look for Energy Star Certified pumps to ensure youre not wasting energy throughout the swimming season. Most variable speed pumps are certified and can typically lower energy costs by around 80% versus an older single speed pump.

You also dont want to choose a pump simply because of its higher horsepower rating. As noted, a pump that overpowers your pool will only waste energy and cost you money so picking a pump to fit your pool is your best bet.

The Best Energy Efficient Eco Swimming Pool Pumps

The cost of operating a pool doesn’t have to be expensive, but if youre a pool owner with the traditional style single speed pool pump, it’s costing you daily!

Apart from the energy saving, a variable speed ECO pool pump also lowers the flow rate. A lower flow rate takes the pressure off the pool plumbing and other equipment, increasing equipment life and further reducing maintenance costs.

How Mono And Dual Speed Pumpers Work

Hayward TriStar Pool Pump 2 HP Energy Efficient SP3220EE ...

There are some critical differences between mono and dual-speed pumpers. First, as youd expect, mono speed pumpers are those that work under a specific speed. For instance, the Hayward SP2610X15 which operates under a mono speed of 3,450 revolutions per minute.

And quite often mono speed pumpers are regarded to be the most effective, due to the degree of circulation it offers while in use. Besides, they are always cheap but could escalate in cost, when it starts taking a toll on your electricity bills. They are always noisy when in use.

On the other hand, dual-speed pumpers are a bit economical in terms of electricity cost because sometimes you can reduce the speed when you dont want to go heavy, and that will help in reducing your cost. Overall, a dual-speed pumper gives you options. However, the lower speed of a dual-speed pumper is sometimes redundant which then forces people to depend on the higher speed always.

Reduce Power Use Up To 85%

Just a few years ago, “energy efficient” pool pumps required a staggering 1,600 – 2,000 watts of power. In fact, the biggest opportunity for power savings is not with your air conditioning system, but with your swimming pool pump. Upgrading to EcoPump energy efficient pool pumps can save over $1,000. per year when compared to traditional pool pumps.

How Do Pool Heat Pumps Work

Heat pumps use electricity to collect and transfer heat. Air does not need to be warm for a heat pump to work efficiently. Although heat pumps operate more efficiently in temperatures above 50F. degrees, even relatively cool air contains significant amounts of heat energy.

Essentially the pools pump draws water in and through a filter and heat pump heater. The heat pump fan pulls outside air in and across the evaporator coil. The coils Freon absorbs heat from the air, which becomes warm gas within the coil. The compressor increases the Freon gas heat and moves it on through the condenser/heat exchanger that transfers the heat to the cool pool water being pumped and circulated through the heater. The heat exchanger warms the water approximately 3F. to 5F. degrees before it is returned to the pool. The hot gas returns to its liquid form as it flows through the condenser coil, back to the evaporator and the process repeats itself affording you a comfortable pool or spa experience.

Pool Pump Regulation Changes For 2021

The federal regulations for pool pumps are changing in 2021. To help you understand these changes, we’ve put together a detailed guide explaining the new regulations and how they might affect you.

The new regulations state that any pool pump manufactured after July 19, 2021, must comply with updated guidelines mandated by the Department of Energy . Under the new guidelines, efficiency standards vary based on the type and size of the pump. Larger single speed pumps for inground pools and other applications will soon be replaced by variable speed models. Only a handful of smaller single speed pumps will still meet the regulations. Unlike previous state legislation, which only spelled out the requirements for pool filtration pumps, the new DOE regulations apply to all pumps, regardless of application. These requirements focus on meeting the minimum efficiency standards for U.S. homes and businesses.

The new pool pump law involved input from a number of sources, including utility companies, manufacturers, trade associations, and consumer groups to produce new standards that would be fair and feasible. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy produced a document in Sept. 2018 entitled Energy Conservation Standards for Dedicated-Purpose Pool Pump Motors.”

So what does all this mean for you?

Choose The Best Time Of Day For Heating To Run:

The most Efficient pool pump on the market

Setting the timer to run HPPH around noon helps to lower energy costs. On systems with a Heat Pump Pool Heater for 100% of their heating requirement, the time of day that you run your HPPH is an important consideration as heat pumps get their heat from the air. Logically then the best time to run a HPPH is when the air temperature is at its warmest during the day. This is most easily accommodated by setting the controls for your filtration system to operate during the warmest time of the day as well – as a Heat Pump Pool Heater will only operate when it has water flow. As long as your filtration is running at the warmest time of the day, your HPPH will operate at its optimum Coefficient of Performance or efficiency which is calculated by dividing the measure of energy output divided by energy input. Pool Heat Pump heaters generally have a COP between 3.0 to 7.0. It’s probably possible to find smart control systems for swimming pools, and if not, we’re sure it will be shortly.

The Robotic Pool Cleaner

Robotic pool cleaners are another way to save on pool energy costs, sparing your system from operational overtime. Theyve become commonplace in many backyards, and theyve come a long way in terms of technological ability. Not only do they not run as long as your pools cleaning system, but they assure maximum cleaning efficiency at a fraction of the energy usage.

On average, robotic pool cleaners cost about five cents, per hour, to use. This great operational cost reduction exists because robotic pools cleaners dont need to use your pools filtration system. So, you can run your system for fewer hours without sacrificing your pools cleanliness.

Some robotic pool cleaners can clean your pools steps, walls, coves and other tough-to-reach areas, too. Modern versions of these cleaners utilize electric motors to move and create suction. Plugged into a regular outdoor outlet, this nifty tech addition functionally serves as a highly efficient vacuum.

What Is Hydraulic Horsepower And How Does It Factor

Hydraulic Horsepower is the true measure of a pump’s performance. It represents the amount of water a pump can push to, and through, the pool. The new regulations for 2021 are such that any single speed pumps operating at 0.711 HHP or higher do not meet the regulations, and should be replaced with variable speed technology. However, there are still minimum efficiency requirements for pumps less than 0.711 HHP, and not all single speed pumps meet those requirements.

ENERGY SAVINGS TIP: Although you don’t have to change your existing pump, and even if your current single speed pump operates at less than 0.711 HHP, switching to a variable speed pump can save you significant money on your utilities bill each month. The Volume Of Water In Your Pool

The first thing you need to know is how much water is in your pool. There are some calculations you need to do here to get the right inground pump. And you will get the number of gallons of water in your pool. Follow these equations to determine that.

For pools of Rectangular shape, the volume in gallons of water = Length x Width x Average Depth x 7.5. and for pools Circular in shape: the volume of water in gallons = Diameter x Diameter x Average Depth x 5.9. For pools that look like Kidney in shape, the volume in gallons of water = x Length x Average depth x 3.38. Add the depth of the deep end to that of the shallow end and finding their average. And this will give you the average depth of your pool.
