Big Changes Coming To Public Pools This Summer As Communities Face Tough Choice On Reopening

MISSION, Kan. Public pools will look very different this summer if they open at all with the coronavirus threat still looming, as teenage lifeguards will be tasked with maintaining social distancing and spotting COVID-19 symptoms in addition to their primary responsibility of preventing drownings.

Pools that do plan to open will take precautions, including screening temperatures on entry, requiring lifeguards to wear masks and significantly reducing the number of swimmers allowed in the water and locker rooms, said Dr. Justin Sempsrott, the medical director for the lifeguard certification program Starguard Elite and executive director of Lifeguards Without Borders, which works to reduce drownings worldwide.

It’s definitely not going to be business as usual this season,” he said.

Outdoor Pools To Remain Closed For 2020 Season

Posted on May 19, 2020

In the interest of public health and safety, Overland Parks five outdoor public pools will not open for the 2020 summer season.

The Overland Park City Council voted Monday night to keep Bluejacket, , Stonegate, and Youngs Pools and Tomahawk Ridge Aquatic Center closed.

All five outdoor pools were scheduled to be open Memorial Day weekend through early August.

In accordance with Johnson Countys stay-at-home order and the Johnson County Recovery Plan, City staff have not had the opportunity to hire and train hundreds of lifeguards that typically staff the citys outdoor pools during the summer. Training and lifeguard duties require close contact, including CPR classes and other first aid efforts. These duties do not allow for physical distancing.

City staff considered an option to open one City pool with limited attendance, allowing for social distancing, gathering size limitations, staff training restrictions, safety equipment and other factors.

Under the single-pool plan, a maximum of 80 guests would have been able to attend Tomahawk Ridge Aquatic Center for 90 minutes at a time. The pool would have closed for an hour of cleaning before another 90-minute window opened for another group of 80 guests. The pool would have opened July 1, at the earliest.

Outdoor swimming lessons and the 2020 Overland Park Waves season are also canceled for 2020.

Pool Rules + Policies

Lap Swimming Etiquette

While lap swimming is available, there are times when lap lanes are limited due to other programs. Please familiarize yourself with the pool schedule. Lap lanes are first-come-first-serve. However, during peak usage, it will become necessary for you to share your lane with another swimmer. When approaching to share a lane, please ask the person who is already occupying the lane. When sharing a lane, each person may choose a side of the lane or circle swim. Please remember to stay to your side of the lane including your legs and arms.

Circle Swim Courtesy

When looking to join a lane for circle swimming, look at the speed of the other swimmers and select a lane that is appropriate for you. Then notify the swimmer in that lane that you would like to join them. Keep to the right at all times. Swimming within a lane is by agreement of the majority. Swimmers should arrange themselves in speed order, fastest to slowest. Always be aware of what is going on in your lane. If a swimmer behind you looks as though he/she may overtake you on the next lap, stop and wait in the corner for the swimmer to pass Push off underwater to avoid making waves for oncoming swimmers.

Aquatics Policies

As with any class or program, The J’s Aquatics program does adhere to cancellation, pro-rate and refund policies. Please see our page for more information.

Some Overland Park Pools Not Likely To Open Due To Staffing Shortage

Overland Park, KS — Without more applicants, some facilities in Overland Park will likely stay closed. The city hasnt made any final decisions yet, but the outlook is grim.

The city needs 225 lifeguards to open all 6 pools. They have 100 applicants.

We want our pools to be safe and an enjoyable place for our community to come and in order to do that we have to have, be properly staffed. Were not going to put our staff in a situation where they cant properly maintain safe standards, said city aquatics supervisor Renee Reis. Theres that likelihood that pools wont all be open in the City of Overland Park for the upcoming season. Reis said they will likely keep the Matt Ross Community Center open in addition to two outdoor pools.

Our staff is working hard, booking it right now to try and get as many part time, seasonal and temporary staff on board before we start opening up our seasonal locations for the summer, said communications manager Meg Ralph.

Denna Rose Farmstead is not an outlier. Theyre also looking for seasonal help.

Were going to do our best. Were going to get our locations open, Ralph said. You may see some functional changes this summer just depending on how many people we can get in the door between now and then.

The baby goats of Deanna Rose are not in jeopardy. Full time staff and volunteers are making sure theyre ready for their debut on April 1.

You can apply online for open positions in Overland Park.
