Brown And/or Purple Stains

A purplish stain you say? Well, that one is much easier to figure out. Whenever you see purple staining in the water, other than berries, the most likely cause is a surplus of manganese in the water supply. Manganese is typically found in high levels in well water but is also in municipal water, depending on where you live.;

Removing Fresh Oil Spills

The best thing to do with an oil spill is to clean it immediately. Start by removing the surface oil. You can use several absorbent materials to sop up the spill. Paper or cloth towels work. But be sure to blot instead of wiping.

Wiping tends to spread the stain and push the greasy liquid deeper into the concrete. After blotting up as much as possible, cover the stain with a powdered absorbent material.

Kitty litter is often used for this purpose. Some cleaning experts advise avoiding the more expensive brands of kitty litter. All kitty litter is made of absorbent clay.

But the costlier varieties also include clumping additives that cause the litter to clump up when it encounters moisture. You can also use other absorbents.

Dry Portland cement, talcum powder, diatomaceous earth, Fullers earth, and even cornmeal or corn starch all work well. Leave the absorbent over the spot for 24 hours.

Remove and repeat until the absorbent material doesnt absorb any more oil. With luck, that may do it. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.

Removing Organic Pool Stains

Hello chlorine, my old friend. As we learned in our testing section, chlorine should always be your go-to cleanser for organic pool stains. Although you use chlorine regularly to sanitize the water, unfortunately, youll need a whole lot more cleaning power than your usual dose to take out rampant organic pool staining.

So, instead of spending your day scrubbing chlorine into every little stain, the easiest way to remove organic stains from around your pool is in one fell swoop. Thats right. Were talking about pool shock.;

Pool shock is the strongest and most potent dose of chlorine you can add to your pool for the biggest sucker punch to those problematic stains. But we cant just go tossing in chlorine shock willy-nilly. Lets take it step by step.

Step #1Test and Balance Your Pool Water: As a conscientious pool owner, you know that the number one rule about pool maintenance is to always test and balance the pool water before adding any chemicals or additives.;

Were about to add a lot of chlorine here, so dont worry too much about the chlorine levels. Instead, focus on the total alkalinity and the pH of the pool water. You probably already know this, but just as a refresher, were looking for alkalinity between 100-150 ppm and a pH between 7.4-7.6.

Balance and retest until you find the sweet spot.

Pro Tip: For best results, always remember to shock the pool at night so as not to lose chlorine to UV radiation.;

How To Prevent Metal Pool Stains

How to remove Pool Stains!
  • Always use a hose filter when adding water to your pool, cleaning your filter, or any time you use the hose near your pool. Whether you live in a place with hard water or just arent sure about the quality of your local water, its a good idea to use a filter to keep things clean.
  • Frequently test your pool water for metals. There are home kits that do this, but as we mentioned earlier, its best to take a sample of your pool water into a professional to do the testing. That way, youll know for sure.
  • Frequently test your pool water, in general. Make sure to pay close attention to pH. If you pH fluctuates considerably, especially on the low side, the acidic pool water will start to corrode any metal plumbing you have in your pool.;
  • Use a Metal Sequestrant. If metal stains in your pool are a common problem, then its a good idea to start using a metal sequestrant as part of your regular pool maintenance. This chemical actually forces floating metal particles to cluster together, allowing your pool filter to clean them out automatically.

Pro Tip: Metal Stain Removers and Metal Sequestrants are NOT the same things. Sequestrants are a staple when it comes to preventing pool stains but once you have them, youll need a metal remover to get them out.;

Concrete Stain Removal Tips

  • Dont scrub concrete with a wire brush, as it can scrape it.
  • Be mindful of rinsing oil and other chemical stains into plants and other sensitive areas, as well as storm drains.
  • Spot test whatever you do on a small, hidden area of your concrete to make sure no further damage will be created by any of these methods.
  • Think about wearing protective clothing, eye wear and gloves, depending on which method you choose.
  • Concrete counter tops require extra precautions, so consult your manufacturer prior to using any of these stain removal tips.
  • Be careful using bleach or other chemicals on colored or stained concrete as it can discolor. Concrete is often colored in shades of grey so check to make sure yours isnt.
  • Pressure washers can quickly remove dirt, debris and some concrete stains, but it is also easy to misuse them and damage your driveway, walkway or patio. If you think a power washer might be your best option, consider hiring a professional with experience pressure washing concrete, or do a bit of research on how to properly use a power washer to remove stains without damaging your concrete.
  • How Sealers Can Protect Your Pool Deck

    Getting on a schedule to seal your concrete surface regularly is key to pool deck maintenance. Sealers protect your surface from general wear and tear. They also prevent the color of your pool deck from fading and keeps outside elements such as chlorine from your pool water from absorbing into the surface. Since they make your surface nonporous, sealers also make your pool deck easier to clean. Another great thing about sealers is that you can have a contractor combine the sealer with non-slip additives, making your pool deck a safer place to walk.

    Discuss how often your pool deck needs to be sealed with a concrete contractor in your area.

    The Importance Of Regular Pool Deck Cleaning

    Regular pool deck cleaning keeps that deck looking its best, providing a welcoming atmosphere for yourself and visitors. However, an improved appearance is not the only reason to ensure you schedule regular pool deck cleaning for your property!

    One reason to keep a pool deck clean is that dust, dirt, leaves, twigs, and other residues on the pool deck get blown into the pool with every gust of wind. Not only does that mean an unpleasant swimming experience, but all that debris also makes the pools filter and pump work overtime. The more debris in a pool, the harder it is to pump water to the filter and the more often that filter needs cleaning and other maintenance.

    Mold, moss, and other residues are also typically slippery underfoot. Pool decks are already somewhat dangerous when wet or if youve neglected fixing cracks and other such damage, so its vital that you keep them as clean as possible and free of slick moss and other debris.

    Mold, pollen, and dust are also bothersome to anyone with allergies and other such health concerns. Even when in the open air by your pool deck, you might notice that your allergies and breathing disorders get triggered the more you ignore needed cleaning! Regular cleaning also removes unpleasant mold odors from the pool deck.

    How Do You Maintain A Concrete Pool Deck

    Removing Rust Stains from your Pool

    There are steps you can take throughout the year to make your annual cleaning easier.

    • Rid the surface of dirt and grime as it collects to prevent stains from occurring. To do this, spray off the surface using a garden hose with a high-pressure nozzle.
    • Prevent damage by taking care of small cracks and chips in the surface as soon as you spot them. Small problems can turn into large problems when theyre not addressed. Not only can they become unsightly, but damage can also create safety issues for people walking around your swimming pool.
    • Protect your pool deck from mold and mildew by not letting wet towels and pool toys sit for long periods of time.
    • Avoid planting large shrubs or trees near your pool deck to prevent root damage in your pool deck.
    • Remove items made of metal from your pool deck. Even small objects such as bobby pins can create rust stains on your deck.
    • Seal your pool deck .

    How To Remove Oil Stains From Concrete

    All it takes is a moments inattention when changing the motor oil in a vehicle or small engine. Before you know it, a pool of oil is spreading across the concrete floor of your garage or driveway.

    A failed seal in a lawnmower, an unsuspected leak in an oil container, and other causes can add up to the same thing: A dark, greasy, hard-to-remove stain that can get tracked elsewhere on the concrete and even into your house.

    Oil stains on concrete can be tough to remove. Concrete is porous, so liquids, including oil, can seep into the surface where they resist many cleaning methods.

    However, if you know what to do, you can remove oil from concrete and restore the surface to its original condition.

    The International Concrete Repair Institute;suggests these methods for cleaning oil from garages, driveways, sidewalks, and other concrete surfaces.

    No Vitamin C Tablets No Problem

    Have rust spots that you want to take out but vitamin C is at a premium? Then no problem, you can use some Zodiac pH down tablets in place of vitamin C tablets. Zodiac pH down tables are made with Sodium Bisulphate which is basically an acid and works just as well as vitamin C on rust stains! Just be careful and use appropriate protection like gloves and dont touch your eyes without washing your hand as sodium bisulfate is a lot more corrosive than vitamin C.

    Best Methods To Clean A Pool Deck

    A clean pool deck is a must for any property! Neglecting needed pool deck cleaning can mean premature breakdown of the deck materials as well as unsafe walking surfaces. Pool decks also hold chlorine residues, creating bothersome odors around the pool, as well as sand, silt, and storm debris that then wind up in the pool, overworking the filter and creating dirty, unpleasant swimming conditions!

    Use oxygenated and not chlorine bleach, or a diluted vinegar solution for wood and concrete decks and to kill algae, moss, and other growth around the pool. Add dishwashing soap for especially dirty decks, or pressure washing equipment for cleaning the pits and pores of stone, concrete, and brick.

    Along with choosing the right solutions and cleaners for your homes pool deck, its also vital that a homeowner consider the best tools and techniques for various pool deck materials. Harsh scrubbing might damage soft wood, for example, but a firm brush and a bit of elbow grease is often needed for paver stones and concrete.
