Facilities Operated By Hpard

Washington Park Pool Won’t Open By Memorial Day

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department operates the following facilities within Memorial Park. The Memorial Park Golf Course, the Memorial Park Tennis Center, the Memorial Park pool and fitness center, and the Memorial Park ballfields and permitting process.

The Memorial Park Golf Course was a 9-hole sand golf course. It was replaced in 1934 with a championship quality 18-hole course covering over 260 acres that was designed by golf course architect John Bredemus. In 1995, following a golf course restoration campaign, the course reopened with a lighted driving range and a new clubhouse facility.

In winter of 2019, the Memorial Park Golf Course was closed for renovations. During those renovations, the Memorial Park driving range, pro shop, putting green and Becks Prime restaurant are open and will remain open during most stages of construction. While Memorial Park Golf Course is closed for renovations, we invite you to visit one of the following four municipal golf courses:

These golf courses are conveniently located on the west, central, east and north sides of Houston.

The Memorial Park Tennis Center has 18 hard-surface courts, a practice wall, a pro shop with lockers, and shower facilities available for a nominal fee. Lessons, tournaments, leagues, corporate outings and other events may be scheduled through the Center Staff. Information: 832.395.7556.

The Pool Is Closed For The 2021 Season

Dunlop Park Memorial Swimming Pool

The Town of Twisp has released the following statement regarding the Wagner Memorial Pool.“Due to the extremely unhealthy conditions caused by the wildfires near Twisp, the Town has made the difficult decision to close the pool for the remainder of the season. During this time, the Health and Safety of the public and pool staff are the highest priority. The forecast is for sustained and increasingly unhealthy air quality in Twisp, and as such Town officials recognize that a continued opening of the pool is not feasible at this time. We appreciate the tremendous effort that so many, including the Friends of the Pool have put into the opening and operation of the pool this year. Thank you for understanding during these difficult times and we look forward to working together next year.”– Town Officials

The pool was originally built in 1966 after a tragic accident took the life of a young boy. Ernst and Kathrine Wagner had a vision with the hope that everyone would learn to swim in a safer environment and therefore, funded the construction of the Ernst O. Wagner Memorial Pool. The pool continues to operate due to a fund the Wagners set up and through various donors like the FRIENDS OF THE POOL.

Bethlehems Redesigned Memorial Pool To Open Next Week

After being delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, Bethlehems redesigned Memorial Pool will open next week, starting with a preview night for season pass holdersthe night of June 11, before opening to the general public June 12.

The 64-year-old pool, the citys largest, has been closed for renovations since 2018. It was supposed to reopen last year, but remained closed.

After a $5.2 million renovation, Memorial went from a single pool to three pools with modern features.

One of the pools includes a beach-like entry and water amusements for small children, while a second pool is dedicated to multiple water slides. The third pool has a diving board and lanes for swimming laps. City officials have said they hope the renovations make Memorial into a destination pool.

In an announcement Thursday, city officials said the pool will be open 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. next Friday as a preview for season pass holders including neighborhood pass holders for this one day only. The pool will be open noon to 1 p.m. Saturday for season pass holders and open to the general public from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The city has already sold a record number of pool passes, said Jodi Evans, the citys recreation director. The first day of pass sales Bethlehem sold 500 passes, or $14,000 worth in one day, she said. The city has two options for passes: A regional pass which entitles the holder access to all Bethlehem pools and a neighborhood pass that allows access to a specific pool.
