An Imbalance In The Calcium Levels

Why Your POOL WATER Is CLOUDY (And How To Clear It Up) | Swim University

Whether your pools water is hard or soft, it plays a significant role in its appearance. Hard water contains a high concentration of calcium, which can cause your water to appear murky or opaque.

In addition, high calcium content doesnt just distort the appearance of your water but can also damage the pool filter and plumbing, mainly due to calcium accumulation.

Vacuum Water Out Of Your Pool

You should now see a big cloud at the bottom of the pool. This means the pool flocculant collected all the particles that were making the water cloudy and sank them to the bottom. And that means its time to vacuum.

If you just vacuum your water through your filtration system, itll just blow right back in through the return jets. Instead, you have to vacuum the water out of your pool.

To do this with a multiport valve on your filter, just set it to the Waste option. This will send the pool water out of the backwash port as you vacuum. Keep a garden hose in your pool to refill your water while you vacuum.

If you dont have a multiport valve, open the drain port on your filter and let it drain out as you vacuum.

Move the vacuum slowly along the bottom of the pool or else youll kick up the cloudy water. You may have to do this multiple times. Let the cloud resettle before continuing.

What Identifies As Cloudy Pool Water

You know your pool water is getting cloudy when it starts to take on a murky or milky appearance. This is largely due to foreign particles that contaminate the pool water and reflect most of the sunlight, giving the appearance of a murky pool.

These particles are usually micron-sized, meaning that theyre so small that its impossible to see them with the naked eye.

There are some varying degrees to which your swimming pool water may become cloudy.

How Do I Fix It

Cloudy pool water can happen for many reasons. In order to fix it, you will need to first determine the cause. Once the cause is known, follow the simple steps mentioned below to resolve it:

  • Use water clarifier.

Pools are usually located in the open as a result foreign particles end up in the water. Additionally, oils, lotions, sweat and dirt carried into the water by swimmers can accumulate in the water, making it appear cloudy.

When theres a rush to open the pool and it looks cloudy, use a pool water clarifier to get your pool water cleared up quickly. This chemical gathers the fine particles and makes them clump together then they are easily filtered out by the pool filter.

  • Remove the algae.

Algae can be removed by scrubbing the surfaces with a pool brush, then using a net to remove it. The other option is to shock the pool with chlorine after scrubbing to remove the algae. This will also help restore the sanitary conditions of the pool.

  • Clean or replace the filter cartridge of your pool or spa.

Try cleaning or replacing the filter cartridge as this might be a reason behind cloudy pool water. The filter cartridge will get clogged if not maintained and not be able to function properly. Regular cleaning and replacement of pool filter cartridges are necessary.

How To Fix and Clear Cloudy Pool Water

Whats more enticing than the sight of crystal-clear pool water on a hot summer day? According to a pool industry standard, your pool water should be as clear as your drinking water.1 In fact, cloudy pool water is a drowninghazard, making water clarity a matter of both aesthetics and safety. Experts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend bathers ensure the drain at the bottom of the deep end of the pool is visible from the deck before getting in the water . That helps ensure that anyone in trouble in the water can be spotted by a lifeguard or another individual.

    Cloudiness: Usually a Physical Problem

According to pool expert Terry Arko,2 cloudy pool water is usually a physical problem, not a chemical one. Cloudiness can be caused by particles in the water that enter by settling out of the air or from bathers .

To remedy pool water cloudiness, first check the filter. There are three main types of swimming pool filters the chart below lists these along with the smallest particle size removed by them, in units of microns. Microns are millionths of a meter. To help you visualize a micron, an average human hair has a diameter of about 100 microns.

    Filter Type
    Diatomaceous Earth4-6

Arko recommends checking the pool pump for proper flow rate sizing and the pump impellers to ensure they are intact. If the filter is working well and cloudiness persists, he suggests a chemical remedy may be in order.

Determining The Cloudiness Level And How To Fix It

There are different levels of cloudiness for pool water. The solution you use to clear your pool of its cloudiness will depend on the level, or severity, of the cloudiness.

    Dull or Flat + Fix

Dull or flat pool water will still be blue but will no longer have its regular sparkle and shine.

    The fix:
    • Adjust the pH to between 7.2 and 7.6
    • Add clarifier to your pool in the amount recommended for your pool size
    • Run the pump and filter system for 12 hours.

    Hazy + Fix

Hazy water is no longer clear, but you can still see the bottom of the pool although not distinctly.

    The fix:
    • Adjust the pH to between 7.2 and 7.6
    • Add clarifier to your pool in the amount recommended for your pool size
    • Run the pump and filter system for 12 hours.

    Cloudy + Fix

Cloudy water looks milky. You can still see the bottom of the pool in the shallow end but not in the deep end.

    The fix:
    • Adjust the pH to between 7.2 and 7.6
    • Add the recommended amount of clarifier for your pool size
    • Run the pump and filter system for 8 hours
    • Turn off the pump for 8 to 10 hours
    • Thoroughly vacuum the pool and run to waste
    • Run the pump for 4 hours.

    Opaque + Fix

Opaque water is so milky that you can no longer see the bottom of the pool at all.

    The fix:
    • Add water to the pool so the level is above the skimmer box line
    • Adjust the pH to 7.8
    • For a pool cartridge filter, remove the cartridge, and for a sand filter, set it to recirculate
    • Start the pump

    Total Alkalinity Too High

Pool water with a high total alkalinity is often associated with cloudiness. This is because it can cause an imbalance in the pH levels and lead to calcium scaling. Typically if your TA is higher than 200 ppm, youre at risk of a cloudy pool and just like imbalanced pH levels, your chlorine will be less effective.

So youve got your pool up and running, cleaned out all of the leaves and dirt, and everythings looking good, then one day you look out and notice that your pool water is cloudy. What happened? In this article, we will discuss what causes pool water to turn cloudy and discuss ways to get your water clear again.

    Making Milky Water Clear

What Causes Cloudy Pool Water and Why

There are no silver bullets for clearing a swimming pool. It will always take a few days. Make sure that the pool water is continuously filtered. This will give you the quickest result.

The steps below should help you get the water clear again:

    • Check the water quality with a good tester. The pH value is particularly important in this respect. Make sure this value is stable between 7.2 and 7.6.
    • Perform a chlorine shock as explained in the video below.
    • After the chlorine shock, the chlorine value should be between 1 and 2 ppm. Be careful when adding chlorine. Too much chlorine can cause adverse effects or damage to the pool.
    • Ensure continuous filtration. In other words, let your pool pump run 24 hours a day. Check the values of your pool on a daily basis and, if necessary, add the correct maintenance products.
    • To remove small particles of dirt, it is advisable to add flocculant to the pool. This makes the dirt particles stick together so that they are stopped by the pool filter.

Answers To Why Is My Pool Cloudy

According to experts, a cloudy pool water is predominantly caused by physical problems. As people get into the pool, the water becomes a home not just to pathogens, but to hair, skin, fabric, oil, grime and bodily fluids. Add to that, based on a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control, an average person can leave around 0.14 grams of fecal matter into the water in as fast as 15 minutes. Whats more? Even when the pool is seldom used, it can still get cloudy due to the accumulation of dust, pollen and other particles that are carried by air.

Other major factors that can severely affect the clarityand overall cleanlinessof your pool include the following:

How To Fix A Cloudy Above Ground Pool With No Bottom Drains

If you have an above ground pool and it does not have bottom drains, do this:

Hook your manual vacuum cleaner and place it atthe bottom of your pool. Then, turn it upside now. Your pool filter will drawwater from the bottom of your pool using the vacuum head and later release thefiltered water through the return jet.

    • Run a pool test

If you are certain that your water is clean, check the chemicals. If the chemicals are imbalanced, adjust them until theyare balanced.

The resultshould be a PH between 7.4 and 7.6. Alkalinity should be between 100 parts permillion and 150 ppm. The calciumhardness should be between 175 ppm to 225 ppm and the chlorine should bebetween 1 ppm and 3 ppm total chlorine should be 3ppm, combined chlorine, below 0.2 ppm to avoid chloramine and free chlorine should be between 1 and 3ppm.

    • Use Pool flocculant

If your pool cloudiness isnt that bad, you can try using a pool flocculant. Once the flocculant does what it is supposed to do, the suspended debris in your pool will sink to the bottom of the pool. Vacuum them out, refill and then, balance your water.

    • Use pool clarifiers

Using a pool clarifier can be part of your weekly pool maintenance as a preventive measure. It can prevent any problems that might lead to a cloudy pool. However, it keeps your pool water clear by coagulating debris.

Wait Just How Cloudy Is Your Pool

Cloudy is a pretty vague term, and you should know that there are different stages of cloudy pool water. And yes, it goes from bad to worse.

Personally, Id break cloudy water into three categories:

    • Flat. The least severe form, in that your pool water still has its color but it doesnt have the sparkle it once did.
    • Hazy. The water is starting to lose its color and its now difficult to make out small details on the pool floor.
    • Milky. The water is no longer translucent, meaning the pool floor is not visible at all. This is pretty much as bad as it gets.

Poor Water Chemistry: High Ph Alkalinity And Calcium Hardness Levels

    Why is my pool cloudy?

High levels of pH, Total Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness can form scale on your pool surfaces and inside your plumbing. This can lead to pool filtration, bacteria growth, and cloudy water. And poor water chemistry makes it more difficult for your chlorine to function well and kill contaminants.

SOLUTION: Test and balance your pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels.

The proper pool water chemistry levels are:

    • pH: 7.4 to 7.6.
    • Alkalinity: 100 parts per million to 150 ppm, with 125 ppm being ideal.
    • Calcium Hardness: 175 ppm to 225 ppm for vinyl liner pools, or 200 ppm to 275 ppm for concrete and plaster pools.

    Test And Balance Your Water

Because youve removed water from your pool, youll need to rebalance your water chemistry. Test your pool water using test strips or a liquid test kit and adjust your Alkalinity and pH. Once you get those levels balanced, add your chlorine.

Now that youve gotten the cloudy water out of the pool, you can start running your filter system normally .

    Why Is My Pool Cloudy

Why is my pool cloudy? Were your plans for swimming in your pool canceled because the water seemed cloudy? This situation could be familiar among everyone with a pool on their property.

We all know that clear pool water is equal to a well-maintained and sanitized pool. And at the same time, the pool waters appearance influences your desire to swim in it. This situation could be annoying for most people.

    Is Cloudy Pool Water Safe

So we know that cloudy pool water is not the most luxurious thing, but is it really that bad? If youre not too picky, wouldnt it be just fine to swim in a pool that isnt perfectly clear? Unfortunately, regardless of how picky you are, its never a good idea to swim in water that isnt clear. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , you should check each time you use your pool to make sure the drain at the deepest part of your pool is visible.

Cloudy water poses several hazards. First, if you cant see the drain at the deepest part of the pool, you might not see a person down there either. Contrary to popular belief, people who are drowning rarely splash or scream. The bodys natural response to drowning is to freeze up and do nothing. So if you cant see well into the pool, theres a serious risk that you wouldnt notice someone who is drowning.

In addition to the danger of drowning, cloudy pool water often means that there isnt enough free chlorine in the water or the free chlorine is being diverted. It is busy dealing with particulate matter instead of bacteria and other disease-causing microorganisms. A cloudy pool may harbor germs such as Crypto , Giardia, Shigella, norovirus, and E. coli.

So if a pool is cloudy, it is much more than a cosmetic issue. A cloudy pool needs to be cleaned before it is safe to swim in.

    Commit To A Deep Clean

Why A Pool Can Go Cloudy – One Reason To Consider

First, lets knock out the grunt workitll make the rest of the steps here all the more effective. Scrub your pool floors and walls using a brush like the patented 360-Degree Bristles Pool Brush, which was developed by pool maintenance experts to help get tight corners without any of the aches or pains associated with a good clean.

Once youve scrub-a-dubbed, remove large debris like leaves and twigs with a skimmer net on a telescopic pole, and vacuumor, if youve invested for the long haul, turn on your robotic pool cleaner.

If algae is the culprit in your pool, make sure you vacuum to waste or clean out your robotic cleaner immediately. Thats the kind of gunk you DONT want ever circulating back out. No, thank you.

Those floating leaves are known to be annoying and even deterring for swimmers, but you dont want to skim them out only when youre about to cannonball. They actually make your sanitizer work much, much harderand if theyre focused on the impossible task of breaking down a solid leaf, theres a lot of smaller, more ill-willed bacteria that will be allow to float around undisturbed.

And dont forget the contaminants that the swimmers leave behind: sweat, sunscreen, leave-in conditioners, moisturizers, and more can also suck up your sanitizers power. This is why its important to always check your levels and consistently add more chlorine as needed. If you skip a week and are already dealing with a fair amount of contaminants, thats essentially offering up your pool house to dirty, dangerous, all-around-unwelcome cloudy water.

And if you have an algae bloom, you are in some serious hot waterwhether you have a pool water heater or not. Unfortunately, its best not to swim with algae. Even though the algae itself usually isnt toxic in residential pools, they cause a series of problems: they inhibit your sanitizer to seriously extreme degrees, and low visibility could lead to drowning. Yes, drowning. So reallyif you have algae, keep out until you clear it up with sanitizing chemicals, pool shock, and a lot of scrubbing and vacuuming. Get it out of here.

    Milky Cloudy Pool Water

This can be caused by high levels of conditioner, TDS, water hardness or a bunch of swimmer waste or bather load. Generally after parties or when a lot of kids are in the pool, the water will become cloudy due to a high level of ammonia in the water. This can be treated with a non-chlorine shock also known as an oxidizer, freeing the contaminants from the water, also working as a clarifier.
